I am looking into buying my first cyclocross, and I'm looking for tips on brands/models, features to look for, and bike shops in the Bay Area where I might actually be able to try a few out before I buy one - it seems like most stores don't carry them.
I won't be using this bike to race, just as a commuter and recreational rider. But I'd like it to last a while.
Thanks for any help you can give . . . !

Re: cyclocross advice?
Thu, September 8, 2005 - 6:36 AMI don't own a cyclecross bike, but I have several friends who have Fuji's. Apparently, they are relatively inexpensive and decent quality. -

Re: cyclocross advice?
Mon, October 10, 2005 - 9:34 AMIt'd also be good to know how much you want to spend. American could build you a great Gunnar Crosshairs, but that would be spendy.
What do you like about your 420 that you'd like to be the same on your CX bike? What would you like to be different?
Without knowing those things, here's my general advice:
There are 49cm cross bikes out there, but geometry gets really weird when you try to get a high bottom bracket, 700C wheels, decent tire clearance, and no toe clip overlap on a 49cm frame. There are just a -lot- of comprimises being made to geometry, things simply don't fit right. I'd strongly encourage you to think about finding a really high quality old rigid steel mountain bike and then convert it to drop bars. I ride a 62cm bike, and I still loved my drop bared MTB. -

True, but it's built by Waterford. This is one of those cases where you do get what you pay for, and will likely fall in love to boot.

Re: cyclocross advice?
Mon, October 3, 2005 - 12:15 AMLike Misma said, you can get a new 'cross bike for as little as $850 at the "Link", but it's not the lighest bike out there. If you just want cool, versitile bike to ride around, the Bianchi Volpe is a great bike. But, if you're looking to get into racing 'cross, you might want to look for something lighter.
You may want to check on craigslist etc. since the 'cross (racing) season has just started, many folks will "up-grading" and selling their older bikes, another good way to find a nicer 'cross bike.
Good Luck. -

Re: cyclocross advice?
Mon, October 3, 2005 - 6:16 PMYeah Craigslist rocks. Go to a few real shops first and get fitted and ride a bunch of models. There is a lot of variation in cyclocross geometry. Do not buy a used bike w/o a knowledgeable person looking it over and checking you for fit. If it is a good bike it is worth paying a good mechanic to check it out for you. If the seller is straight up then they either will have done it already or understand the need for an independent opinion...just like a car. Oh yeah... ride it more than ones before you buy it if you can.
Good luck

Re: cyclocross advice?
Thu, October 6, 2005 - 12:43 AMI love my Surly Cross Check. The steel frame may make it a bit heavier than aluminum would, but the material really eats up the noise from rough city streets. This makes it great for use as an urban transportation cycle.

Re: cyclocross advice?
Fri, October 14, 2005 - 11:05 PMfirst given you dont wanna race look for a triple crank(3 gears in front ) braze-ons for a bike rack and water bottles as many bikes purpose built for racing aint got'em . then realize that the way it fits will be a bit different than a road bike .PAY ATTENTION TO HOW IT FITS does the shop just want to sell ya what they already have in stock or are they looking to order you one (as cool as cross bikes are they just dont sell that well so shops dont order them in every size model and color if they stock ANY it is in the bland easy to deal with color sized to fit a guy about 5'10" ) noting that you are a woman and likely not the right size for whatever they have in stock. but you are in luck nov./dec. 2006 models start coming in and most likely trek/cannondale/kona/fuji... are going to sell the leftovers of the year for cheap so ya might be able to pick one up for a decent price. get out the phone book and call everywhere in the bay with luck you will be able to testride one that fitshalf decently /you fit the size range of what they got in stock. good luck

Re: cyclocross advice?
Thu, November 3, 2005 - 10:43 PMMy cyclocross advise would be not to do it. Wet muddy cold and nasty about sums up my racing experience. I hated it. But hey whatever have fun with it. I have a sweet steel Cramaroti cross bike [ 63 cm cc ] that is way too tall for you. I guess it is a good cross bike but the bottom bracket is way too high for it to make an enjoyable road bike. The knobbies do look mighty cool though.

Sun, November 13, 2005 - 12:14 AMDid you get a cross-bike in 49cm yet? Cuz I've had one for sale. '89 Bianchi Axis. Suntour XCD. Fenders, rack, trunk. Celeste green. As pictured in "green bike tribe". -
