In this day and age could you please explain 'why' many Cyclist's have to be such SNOBS about what they ride and how they are dressed?
We are supposed to be 'a community of cyclist's' with kindred spirits a passion for riding and a sense of 'oneness' so why do we have cyclist's who are so snotty about their full dura-ace carbon wunda-bike and their 1,000 dollars worth of the finest cycling clothes money can buy?
These snobbish jerks give the sport of cycling a bad name!
are you really 'that much BETTER' on your 5,000:00 carbon wunda-bike than say,the guy riding next to you in street clothes on a 300 dollar bike?
let's all stop the snobbery and become more like a cycling family shall we?

Re: Bike Snobs!
Fri, April 24, 2009 - 9:57 AMI think we live in a culture that encourages snobbery, which is caused by its focus on consumerism. Bikes are one of the most democratic forms of transportation there is, but the fact that people thumb their noses at others because their bikes aren't good enough are a threat against it.

Re: Bike Snobs!
Fri, April 24, 2009 - 12:42 PMAnd there are so many different types of snobbery to choose from, ranging from those decked out in the finest matching wicking dude looking down on the one-speeders in cotton cutoffs, to the latter making fun of the former for dressing like superheroes and riding panzy bikes. :)
Me, I just wear whatever's comfortable, ride a cheap bike that I don't mind if I have to replace, and enjoy the ride.... -

Re: Bike Snobs!
Fri, April 24, 2009 - 2:35 PMThe amazing thing about 'bikes not being good enough' is,I just got done building a Mt Bike from old discarded bike parts and an old (usa-made) Schwinn Butted 4130 Cro-moly frame, the finished bike only weighed 27 lbs(light for a mt bike) and it rode SOLID and better than some 1,000:00 Mt bikes Iv'e owned in the past.
Sure it looks like crap, and wont be stolen anytime soon, but it rides beautifully!
Sometimes its just NOT about 'the bike you are on'. -

Fri, April 24, 2009 - 3:16 PMBike snobs, motorcycle snobs, boat snobs, horse snobs, fashion snobs, car snobs & etc..... I once heard that vanity and greed are mankind's two greatest virtues. They drive us to create products of a higher quality and in greater abundance than we require.

You got that right!
Me, I am simultaneously disgusted by, fascinated by, and fully engaged in bike snobbery. Most of the time, its just good-not-so-clean fun. I look down my nose at folding bikes, but the geeks who ride those monstrositys probably have some beef with my $1000 road bike, and there are probably people who look down at that as an "entry level triathlon bike" And I'm sure the dumpster divers have a problem with the the fact that I got my bike new (10 years ago), too. And god help me if I just can't stand it when I see a bike painted Matte Black or $600 rims on a $10 frame. (there's a picture on my Myspace) I road a home built chopper with a $7 frame and $300 worth of accessories myself though! Ha Ha Ha! I'm such a hypocrite. I've got 89 cent plastic pedals on my Allez because I just never got around to buying a clip system, I want one, I just go in the store, get overwhelmed and walk out. Yes, for 10 years.
To be brutally honest, Snobs are just more damn fun than people holding hands and singing cumbaya over riding bicycles. I can think you're a dork for riding a folding bike, or god help you, a "department store bike" *shudder* and you can think I'm a brat for commuting on a bike that cost me more than a paycheck and smelling bad and wearing greasy ass jeans, its a free country. The whole idea of a "cycling community" being one big group is getting antiquated as bikes are becoming more and more mainstream, So what if some of us have Lamborghinis and some of us have Priuses and some of us drive old pickups? And we can all be obnoxious about it if we want to be. It gives the cycling community character.
And I'm a safety snob and proud of it. I do NOT want to be associated, under any circumstances, with morons who ride their bikes on the sidewalk or against traffic any more than I want to be associated with Drunk Drivers and drug dealers, and if that makes me a snob, well, I'm damn proud to be a snob.

Re: Bike Snobs!
Sat, July 18, 2009 - 1:04 PMAnd OH GOD! Have you ever tried riding a two thousand dollar bike? Even if you ride a price of junk, no one who truly enjoys cycling should deny themselves the pleasure of at least test riding one. And heck, a $2300 bike is a lot cheaper and more fun IMHO than a $50,000 car. DO IT! JUST DO IT! DO IT and you will understand. Being a bike geek is just FUN, its just like guys who work on cars, its just something to brag about at the water cooler. (I work with 3 other bike geeks and 3 car geeks) that's really all there is to it!
