Darfur Fundraiser

In 2007 I painted a little Sudanese girl standing at a feeding center in Darfur. This painting is now for auction until October 10th on Ebay. 100% of all proceeds go to the United Nations UNHCR to aid the people of Darfur. So far the auction bid is at $150, but that is too little to make a difference in the lives of people who could use out help.

Will you please help me spread the word about the auction by either adding the Ebay widget or image of the painting with link to http://www.EnzieShahmiri.com . You could even hit STUMBLE IT on my http://world-market-portraits.blogspot.com

I really need your raise awreness about this fundraiser and make it a success. In retunr for your help I will add you to the Participants list on my blog and do a write up about you and your site.

Thanks!

Orphan Works Bill: Government Geared To Exploit Artists!

Imagine a world where the things you made belonged not to you, but to someone else - unless you paid for the right to own them first. Under the Orphan Works Bill, anyone who produces a creative work would have to pay exorbitant sums of money for the simple act of creating art and for the continued ownership of their art through unending copyright registry fees.

This is what the Orphan Works Bill proposes: the bill proposes that as soon as any work of art is created, it would be required to be registered for a moderately high fee with ALL of SEVERAL copyright houses and entered into a giant database. Anyone who does not do this would risk any creation being taken and sold by someone else, and that would be legal because ALL UNREGISTERED WORK would be considered ORPHANED. This includes such simple things as family photos - if posted on the Internet and not registered with a copyright database, your photo album could be used in a series of ads by a major corporation for their latest campaign - and: 1) there would be nothing you could legally do to stop it, because 2) they could legally own your art just by registering it first, and 3) they wouldn't give you a dime. The only way you would regain control of your art is if the previous owner of the copyright allows it to lapse, thereby providing you the opportunity to purchase it.

The OWB extends to all the arts: illustration, photography, computer, mixed media, jewelry, ceramics, acting, performance art, singing, song writing, sculpting, costuming, etc., ad nauseam. It requires the constant registering of any artwork, over and over, ad nauseam; otherwise, your work *could* be used and sold by the government - which will own and run the giant registration companies and databases - for profit. And there is nothing you *would* be able to do about it - ever.

This adds up to a lot of money very quickly - for those who make art and register it, and for those who stand to profit from unregistered art. And not only that, but remember that the copyrights must constantly be renewed as proposed by this bill. Dare I say it? The Orphan Works Bill seeks to totally disempower any creative process in the entire United States of America.

Excerpt from The Illustrators' Partnership Orphan Works Blog, dated September 23, 2008:

Is it wise to concentrate our nations’ copyright wealth in the hands of a few corporate databases? With the meltdown on Wall Street, this might be a good time to ask Congress that question.

The Orphan Works bill would pressure copyright holders to subsidize the start ups of giant commercial databases. The contents of these databases would be more valuable than secure banking information. Yet who can watch the ongoing failure of investment banks that were “too big to fail’ without asking why government should want to create these privately owned image banks on the backs of small business owners who neither want nor need them. Here are some of the questions we’ve raised before about this bad legislative scheme:

• Who’s to be trusted with these databases?
• Who’s to manage them and in whose best interests?
• What happens when a database is hacked?
• What happens when one fails?
• What happens when one is acquired?
• What happens when the terms of service are changed?
• What happens when registration fees become prohibitive?
• What happens when maintenance fees are piled on?
• What happens when exorbitant commissions are imposed?
• What happens to artists who can’t afford to register?
• What happens when registered artists can’t afford to maintain their registrations?
• Will artists have to register their immense bodies of work in competing registries?
• What happens to your business when your clients start calling the databases, not you, to clear rights to your work?
• Why should small business owners be forced to entrust their business information to outside business interests?

Don't delay! Read the latest updates and archives on the Orphan Works Bill at The Illustrators' Partnership Orphan Works Blog found at: ipaorphanworks.blogspot.com/ - and inform yourself. Take it one step further and write to Congress using their handy link to do just that! The more people that know about and speak out against this Bill, the more Congress and your representatives will hear the people's voice and be moved to act in our interest. Our interest is presumably what got them into office, so presumably it is what keeps them there as well. Let them know what you think of the Orphan Works Bill!

If you have never written to Congress, it is easy! Short, one-page letters are highly recommended. See this helpful and simple to follow article on writing guidelines from about.com: usgovinfo.about.com/library/...0199.htm. Another article at itfs.org/webnow/licens...o_congress.htm provides a fast look-up for all your representatives addresses, and suggests that posted letters are much more likely to be recieve attention than emails - as do the guidelines at the United Nations Association of the United States of America (www.unausa.org/site/pp.asp).

***

To put the notion of the Orphan Works Bill into a perspective that has immediate relevance to lots of people on tribe, I'll ask you this: What would Etsy buyers - and more especially sellers - do if this bill was to pass?

Most artists can just afford supplies and a little self-promotion time - let alone registering EVERY SINGLE ITEM of their creation with SEVERAL copyright institutions.

Own your art!

Starving artist. Desperate measures. Darkest before the dawn. What the *%#* happened??!!
The double edged sword that is the artist life has slashed my financial juggler vein. I've always maintained enough of a 9-5 office existence (death) to keep a modest roof over my empire. But now being out of work for close to a year now, well let's just say I'm so poor now I can't even pay attention. To make matters worse I now need wheels also! Motorcycle, large scooter, car, anyhting! Not having transportation in LA is like being a leper in a boxing match.
My abilities run the gambit from portraits to abstracts to graphic art. I also have over 10 years general office/administrative experience.
Therefore if anyone can suggest, offer, barter, aid, employ or in anyway assist me in my quest to save what little life I have left, well you get the picture. I'm in west LA/Culver City.

Where would you live?

Here is an open question.

Assume you have artistic talent and the desire, time and energy to pursue this vocation fulltime.

The question is:
Where would be the best place to live, produce your art and why would you choose this place?
(must be a real location on this planet).

(Let us say that you can move to anywhere in the world and have enough $ to support yourself for 6 months, buy supplies, etc, but after that, you either make it as an artist or die trying, so choose thoughtfully).

I am trying to learn how to draw and paint. I am looking for anyone who loves art and is willing to be an art tutor to me. I would like to find someone or a group of people or start a group who can get together and help each other learn how to draw. I know that taking "official" art classes is probably the best ,but i prefer to learn as informally as possible. Is there anyone who is interested in getting together to draw or to help me learn how to draw and paint.

I'm working on a project with a character who was influenced by the DC Vertigo Graphic Novel: Watchmen (by Alan Moore) (the way Bruce Wane is influenced by Zorro in Batman). Can I get sued over that?

Bad clients

Hello,

I have just recently started my custom airbrushing business. So far, I have had two bad clients in a row. The first guy wanted me to airbrush T-shirts for a High School basketball team, the Waterloo Wildhawks. He sent me the initial $200 to start the project, then when I had completed the project and delivered the T-shirts to him, he handed me a check. Later, the check bounced. I have called his phone numbers numerous times. I have sent him e-mails as well. I have contacted his head coach at the University, who told me since it has 'nothing to do with the University' it has nothing to do with him. I have contacted the head of the Waterloo Wildhawks, who told me that both himself and the guy who bounced the check are 'very busy'. I suppose I could take the check to the bank where it was drawn to resubmit it, but that's in another city from me (I am in Hamilton, Ontario....he is in Waterloo, Ontario. This is an hour drive.)

This guy is obviously dodging me. It looks as though I will have to take him to court.

Then, I had someone who wanted me to do his motorcycle for him. He was rude and obnoxious from the start, demanding that I drop my price. When he asked me how long it took to do a motorcycle helmet, I told him it took two weeks. He told me 'You've got a week!' I spent all week on that project, spraying a coat of paint, drying with the heat gun, sanding it. After a week was over, he said if the helmet wasn't ready then he would take it to someone else to do it. I had the design he asked for done, but I couldn't get it clear-coated. I have to send the clear-coating out to someone else, and he just had a truck come in. The client told me that since I didn't have it clear-coated for him, that I wasn't a 'professional'. Therefore, he would not be paying me for the job I did....only $60 to cover the cost of paint. I was so upset, I took the money and just let him go...even though it cost me $150 in materials and 30 hours in labor to do that helmet....which was fine. I could show you photographs of it if you wanted to see them.

In any case, I have learned to NEVER accept checks from people. Also, I have learned to prepare an invoice for the materials that I use on a project, including the materials as well as (my) labor costs. I still have a problem being assertive with people.

Has anyone else had a problem with clients?

Skill Swap - Tech Help for Marketing Help

Hi all,

I've been a software engineer for the past decade and have recently been getting back into art. Growing up I was always the artist in any of the groups of kids I hung out with -- geeky, D&D types... And in the past couple years when I've had a scanner (I don't right now) I've drawn up a bunch of comic strips, with Gary Larson's Far Side being one of my major influences. I've got a number of other projects I've been working on as well, but I seem to be having a tragically difficult time marketing my material. I've been trying various different tactics to improve traffic to my CafePress store. Unfortunately I don't have any way of knowing if I've succeeded in generating traffic -- I do know that I haven't succeeded in generating any conversions (sales) from the traffic. Every month I sell between 0 and 3 items and I earn about $5 average in commissions, which means the store costs me about $2/mo to maintain right now. So I'm happy maintaining it, but I'm really interested in getting any kind of help I can on guerrilla marketing efforts to improve traffic and sales. And/Or if you have any other suggestions of places to license my art.

What I've done thus far to generate traffic to my CafePress store is to publish my comics on Tribe here, on Deviant Art (http://smolderingremains.deviantart.com) and every strip both here and on DA is includes a link to the store in its description. My fiance maintains my MySpace account for me and the strips haven't been uploaded there. I've also purchased some advertising on Deviant Art, but those ads aren't allowed to link to the store, they can only link to deviant art, so I'm relying on people to read the descriptions to get to the store. A long time ago I also set up a Google AdWords campaign, but there weren't many cartoons on the store at the time and I ended up just owing them money. I've also tried a number of different changes to the layout and content of the store.

The CafePress store itself is here: http://www.cafepress.com/anupwardspiral

I've thought about making stickers of some of my more popular comic strips with the url on the sticker and pasting them up on telephone poles and the like, but haven't gotten around to actually doing it. Deviant Art still says this is my most popular strip: http://www.cafepress.com/anupwardspiral/2705837 so that would probably be the one I would use first.

Of course, I welcome any and all suggestions of things I can do on my own. But if there's anybody out there who is good at marketing or knows someone who might be good at marketing, I'd be interested in bartering my technical services for marketing services. I'm currently salaried at $80k annual, so you'll be getting solid professional service.

Thanks,
ike

Hi,
A publisher recently asked me for an outline of what I'd put in an activity book and one sample drawing. If they like it, I've got the job --which I very much would like. I've written the outline and just finished the drawing --a hidden picture drawing...
I'd like to put a frame --a box-- around the picture, and think a line that looks like it's drawn with chalk would look good.
How can I do that? I can't find it in clip art, and none of my supples makes the right kind of line... pastel, coloured pencil... chalk... they just look messy, which is why I thought of clip art.

I hope someone has suggestions for me!
Thanks,
Terry

Where: SF's SOMA District, (1 block away from Yerba Buena Gardens 4 block from Powell BART)
When: TBD
Cost: TBD

Artists, Models, and Other Creatively-Wired Individuals,

We are putting together a group of people interested in honing their life drawing and/or modeling skills.

ARTISTS:
As there will be no official teacher for the class this is meant for people who are comfortable being self-directed artists. However, if you wish, people of varying skill levels and experience can help and guide each other.

MODELS:
We value diversity so all types of models are encouraged to join regardless of sex, gender, ethnicity, body type. Ideally we would have a good mix of different kinds of models as well as artists

What we offer is a modern and clean studio (with a bathroom) in safe part of SF 4 blocks away from Powell BART

As of today we have these time slots available:
Mondays: 1:00 PM-3:00 PM
Fridays: 7:30 PM-9:30 PM
Saturdays: 3:30 PM-9:30 PM
Sundays: 11:00 AM-8:00 PM

Ideally we would like to have a sizable group or groups that meet regularly so that we can make it worthwhile for everyone involved.

If you are interested please let me know:
1. If you are a model, artist, or both
2. You schedule preferences

If you know other people that might be interested please pass this along to them. If you have any further questions please contact me at my email or tribe.

Thank You,
Become a part of "bAbeL - art project"

Dear brothers and sisters,

i study art therapy in Germany and work on the arty part of my diploma at the moment - and i invite you to support my work “ babel“!
Babel is about the try to cancel the moment of disintegration, it is about identity, community,structure and the basic needs of human beings and it is about you as well, when you join this project;
Please send me one article of your clothing, which you don`t need
anymore (it doesn`t matter if there is a mark on it, a cut in it, the
zipper is not working anymore etc.) and a word (in your language, a
word, which you like, which you don`t like, which you use often or
never, it can be a name, too) to this adress :

Sandra Becker
Hunscheidtstraße 162
44789 Bochum
Germany

in case you like to send me more material - like little messages,
infomation about you, your life, your country, the article of clothing
( maybe there is a story about it - you never liked to wear it, it was
a gift, you wore it in an important moment) - i will be pleased about
it.
my plan is to put all together in a new way - so that there will be one dress and one poem at the end for one performance/ film/installation, but it is not clear how it will be exactly - at least the most important thing depends on you. maybe the dress and the poem will go on a journey again, maybe they will come back to you, maybe you get a message from them, maybe you won´t see them again, maybe....the ideas become more and more with every package i get from you what ever will happen - i let you know. and be sure; whenever you give something - you get something.
the artwork will be shown at the diploma exhibition of the FH Ottersberg (Germany) on march 21th 2008.
you will find a documentation on my tribe-blog.

i hope that it will be possible to support me,
looking forward to get a message from you,

Become a part of babel !

Come see my page for exotic jewelry and had crafted art!!! Hurry hurry! =D

Hello all!
I invite you all to my page... Where theres hand crafted trinkets my mother and I have created with love (And have been doing for years!) Exotic Jewelry, and many more things!!!
Come see about my page, and have fun looking around my gallery!

All figurines are 100% hand made by my mother and I, something we've been doing for years upon years now. =)
We're just trying to get our art out to the world, and share it with people!
If you like what you see, just comment on the desired piece and I shall arrange something for you through paypal. =D
And if not, then just enjoy yourself while looking!

I have also posted jewelry of mine that I had bought not to long ago, but never wear!
So I must sell it to people who will show it the love that I cannot. =)
The prices might be a bit pricey, but I had paid a pretty penny myself, and I have lowered it a bit since I have owned them.
They are owned, but never worn!
So still brand new really. =)
And also the prices are the way they are due to where the pieces are from or their age etc.
But like all the listings say, everything is negotiable! =D
So fear not and email me with what you want to pay (Be considerable! lol) And I'll see if we can't work something out... =)
As for now, happy browsing and I hope you like the new stuffs!
And as always, new is always on the way!
Seeking items from nature for art-making in Berkeley

Hi all-
I'll be leading an interactive art event at the end of the month (at Oakland's Art and Soul Festival), using materials from nature to make a large evolving installation piece. I'm looking for donations of items (from pebbles to branches up to 6 feet long) from nature. I'll pick up near Berkeley. Any item which won't rot, and has come from nature without ecological harm, is ok. For example, if you have cut down some bamboo in your yard, or have landscaping stones which are now unused, or have collected pine cones or shells and have some extras.
Thanks!
-Zach

Ideas for Contemporary Morality Story/Fine Art Photo Shoot

I need your help - your brainstormed ideas . . .

I am starting to organize a story that is a morality play or sorts for my 6 year old Godson, whom I coparent. It will include a yound man setting off in the world and encountering archetypal beings and situations that engage him and end up teaching him somthing essential about living a fulfilling life. the main character will be discussing these situations and beings with a wise person from time to time. I am an artist. You can see some of my work on my profile pics. I will be doing a photo shoot (B&W infrareds) for every chapter in the story. I will be compiling the story and images into a small, hand bound book. I'l make about 100 editions of the book.

What I need help on is the story:
* What do you think the most important things are to learn and integrate to live a fulfilling life?
* What are the best ways to deal with disapointment and loss, with death?
* What are the most essential archetypal situations that teach us the most about living a fulfilling life?
* What archetypal characters teach us the most about living a connected, passionate, and loving life?
* What situations would you create to teach the main Character the foundations of a connected, passionate, and loving life?

Any ideas will be most appreciated.

~ Daniel

seeking license / commission work - suggestions ?

Hey, I've been trying to get some more variety in my portfolio to show folks that I'm not limited to just comic strips. I just put this one up last night http://people.tribe.net/water_muse/photos/5aaa1121-7dd1-4f4e-9436-514b6713fa68 and some of my portfolio can also be seen at http://smolderingremains.deviantart.com

I've not had much luck (yet) with finding work as an illustrator on craigslist. I wonder if anyone here has any suggestions of other (or possibly better) places to advertise myself as being available for either licensed or commissioned illustration work?

Thanks :)

Call for Art ~ the Greenhouse Project

The intention of this work is to recognize and embrace the natural cycles of life, to arrange
our lives in collaboration with natural cycles, and in doing so, we can grow a greener, more
sustainable, integrated, and meaningful experience of our world. The Greenhouse Project
is intended to be an encounter that serves to reconnect and reawaken the participants to
take an active part in the universal, cyclical cycles of life. Through interaction, reflection,
and co-creation, the participants come to encounter themselves as part of the movement of
the Universe. When we awaken to the fact that we are collaborators with nature, we are
more effective in initiating and sustaining beneficial change in our world.

How can you get involved?

Contribute a 4-5 part series or a single piece of art in any medium, and spread the word!
I'm looking for any work that illustrates a natural process, however specifically or broadly
construed. The art could honor the elements, the seasons, any natural cycle involving
plants, water/rain, fire, etc., cycles of life, birth, and death, the passing of time, growth and
decay. Series in all mediums encouraged – paintings, sculptures, photographs, masks,
poems, found objects, natural things (rocks, flowers, plants, feathers) etc. Feel free to run
with it, cuddle with it, expand it, contract it, turn it upside down, inside out, tie it up, set it
free, whatever pleases you the most.

Art contributions made from recycled, reused, and natural materials are highly encouraged.

Other stuff needed:
exotic/tribal fabrics, sheer fabrics/scarves, prayer flags, extension cords, wind chimes, plant
pots, decorative containers, rocks, dried herbs, candles, candleholders, offering bowls,
bells, mirrors, christmas lights, el-wire, and any other miscellaneous items that fit with the
concept and spirit of the project.

Contribute NOW, in time for Flipside (www.burningflipside.com), or after
that, for Bonnaroo and Rainbow Gathering, or even after that,
for Burning Man (www.burningman.com). Play along at home and become a part of
the (r)evolution of this installation in its various incarnations. Stay tuned for a slideshow of
the ongoing process and links to contributing artists @

Hey Folks,

I am building a series of mosaics that are going to be installed in a small park off of Guerrero St. in San Francisco and I really need some help finishing this project. As of right now, I have a number of molds built that I am going to pour concrete in, and then do mosaic on top. I am hoping to find some folks who have experience working with concrete to help me in the process of doing the pouring. Also, if you are interested in doing mosaics, I can use help with that part as well as the installation process.

This project is being done to highlight how to reuse and recycle materials in creative ways, so all of the things used in the mosaic are found materials or things that would otherwise be created as waste and go to the landfill. Also, I am using broken concrete as the aggregate in the concrete forms.

To find out more info about this project go to:
http://www.jennalex.com/solflor/

Call me and let me know when you are available. I am working on this project nearly every day, except for Mondays and Wednesdays.

My cell number is: (415)823-0430.

Many thanks, and it should be a fun project to work together on.

I work with acrylic on lace that has been stretched over canvas. My pieces are quite large .. avarage 30"x30" ... what is the best way for me to document my work? I have a show coming up and the gallery has requested that I sell prints of my work. The problem with the nature of my work is that the lace is highly reflective so does not lend itself to photography. Any help would be gratefully appreciated

So I have been working on getting my studio finished and I'm about to start on the floor. My plans are to do the entire thing in a mosiac of recyclyed broken tile. (easy cleanup and easy to take care of over the long run) Is there anyone out there that knows of where I can get broken tile for free or very low cost. I am located in NW New Mexico but travel quite a bit. If anyone has any ideas please let me know.
Thanx, Dreamie

Your thoughts on UNAUTHORISED COPYING of SHAG and MARK RYDEN art??

OK, it happens all the time I know......but when you start to see the art of your lowbrow/underground favourites being blatantly copied for others profiteering (is that a word?) it really hits a nerve!

Not so long ago I saw dodgy shag coasters at a major local grocery chain down here in Australia....on further inspection I noticed they were mass produced (or should I say mass ripped off) from China. My sister-in-law actually bought a set, unknowingly, because they looked
"kool"......she had never heard of Shag beforeI I later found out Outre gallery here in Oz who represent Shag and Ryden etc. did their best to put a stop to the importation of them!

While searchin for tiki mugs on ebay a few days ago I came across Mark Ryden's piece "Tiki God" being offered as an iron on transfer. On further inspection I realised this was not only an unauthorised item, they hadn't even given the artist any credit! I immediately contacted the seller and explained that it was wrong and a breach of copywright. They replied saying they had purchased the item "unaware"......but the story did'nt wash with me because they also offered an enlarging service and in their "sellers other items" had several more very familiar designs on offer!

Anyway, they basically were not too fazed by my concerns and the item continues to be listed! Ya' see this shit really pisses me off, being an artist myself. I'd like to know your thoughts on this matter of shamefully copying & profiting from others hard work?

Go to

to check out this item on ebay.....& send 'em a message if ya don't like what ya see!

KLab9 Call for Contributions
From KnowledgeLab
KLab9:Art - Technology, Authorship and Ways of Living
A weekend gathering for collaborative and creative reflection. 5th - 7th October, 2007 tbc.
Institute for Advanced Studies, Lancaster University, North West England.

INTRODUCTION

The Knowledge Lab is an attempt to provide a collective space for anti-capitalist reflection. It is located at the margin of the university, an institution essentially geared towards the production of knowledge as a resource for corporate interest and as justification for particular constellations of power relations.
This knowledge lab will address art and ways of critically thinking about our world. Within this broad region of enquiry, the lab will encompass notions of life and art as a political commitment, the influence art can exert in politics and how political ideas in turn influence art. It will also address new ways of making art and how this relates to technologies and social changes, and the use of art as an anti-capitalist means to change and fight the system.

We hope that the knowledge lab will not merely address, but also show that art can initiate critical thinking in the various guises outlined above. Our expectations, in terms of the event, and its outcome, are that this be a sharing of creative ideas and ideas about creativity. We hope that it will draw together people with a common interest in art and alternative ways of living, but working in different fields. From this collective thinking we hope that people will be incited to realize, or make manifest, some of these ways of living and thinking creatively when they leave: We will learn from each other.

STREAMS

Like previous knowledge labs the day will be divided into four streams, each will take place in a separate room.

STREAM 1: TECHNOLOGY Free software, art spaces and interfaces, hardware, DIY and recycling/reusing.

STREAM 2: WAYS OF LIVING This stream concerns process, moment and performance. It is the political stream where we will consider primarily imaginative resistance and artivism, but also touch on debates surrounding gender issues, community and cultural production, and personal/political. We hope to see papers touching on initiatives in direct democracy; the art of changing that system, and the paradigms of inspiration. We would like to discuss how artivism will change society, possibles networks of artivists, ways of action.

STREAM 3: AUTHORSHIP Copy rights, ownership, patenting, and appropriation. (Creative commons, Copyleft,...)

STREAM 4: THE ART MARKET (new ways of) curating, spaces (physical and virtual) to show art, ways of making money: Marketing, the means of production, market forces and anti-market forces, the art market, and art and ethics.

CONTRIBUTIONS

Each day will be split into two parts. On Saturday and Sunday morning papers will be presented in each of the four streams, each lasting 20-30 minutes. Papers will be followed by a brief question period of 10-15 minutes. The afternoon will be divided into discussion periods in each of the four streams. During the weekend there will also be a separate space for workshops and performances.
There are therefore a variety of ways to contribute to the weekend. See below for details:

ACADEMIC PAPERS

The list of streams is not prescriptive, it simply outlines some of the issues we envisage arising given the general themes.

Please also send papers on other themes, these will be gratefully considered.

Submit an abstract of no more than 500 words. In addition please enclose a brief biography. Try to make this, along with your paper, as accessible as possible.

FACILITATED DISCUSSIONS (INVOLVEMENT AND SKILLS SHARING)

If you have an idea for one of the afternoon discussion topics that links in with one of the four streams then send in a your idea and think about one of the two types of involvement below:

If you'd like to take a more pro-active role during the conference, you might want to ADOPT a session - that is, prepare it in advance (suggest questions, main issues, reading material etc and propose the length of the session), arrive prepared for discussion themselves, attend it, and participate passionately in the debates.

We also need people to FACILITATE sessions - ideally a session should NOT be adopted and facilitated by the same person(s). Consider that facilitators are usually best if experienced in their task. Any which way, please get in touch.

== WORKSHOPS, ARTWORKS, AND PERFORMANCES ==

These will broadly tie in with one of the four streams above. Send a proposal [Max: A single side of A4], elaborate on: What your contribution will be e.g. a workshop, a performance, an artwork. How long you envisage it taking. Do you need any equipment or materials? Do you want to limit the number of participants? If so, how many? What do you hope will be born out of this? How do you propose to arrive at this end?

SATURDAY EVENING

DJ and VJ session: Call for DJs and VJs to send in samples so they might come and contribute to an evening of art in many guises. As well as other music, visual, perfomance, etc artist and Artivist.
Nb. Groups are welcome to contribute workshops, materials for display and/or distribution.

INFORMATION

Anybody is welcome to attend the weekend, get involved in the discussions, and take part in the workshops. HOWEVER, YOU NEED TO REGISTER TO ATTEND AS THE EVENT IS LIMITED TO 100 PEOPLE, SO PLEASE GET IN TOUCH: klab9art@googlemail.com

CALL FOR ENTRIES Main exhibition Noorderlicht Photofestival 2007

CALL FOR ENTRIES

Main exhibition Noorderlicht Photofestival 2007

ACT OF FAITH

where religion meets the world

The selection for this year's festival has begun, Noorderlicht welcomes submissions and ideas from all over the world

Visit www.noorderlicht.com for conditions and more information

Deadline for submissions: March 1, 2007

Act of Faith
14th Noorderlicht Photofestival
Location: Groningen, The Netherlands
Period: September 16 through October 28, 2007
Opening: Saturday September 15

In one guise or another, religion currently pervades discussion. In a fire fanned by fear of Islam, resorting to religion has become acceptable in the West too.

Faith is back with a vengeance - as a source of certainty and stability, a safe haven, a refuge with its own norms and values, closely connected with the idea of a closed society that is based on tradition and brotherhood.
But what happens when this faith comes in contact with the surrounding world, an open society that is continually changing, based as it is on dialogue among various opinions? Ultimately the separation of church and state is one of the basic principles of Western society, and a globalized world, with its free exchange of goods and ideas, is a source of heresy.

God and Allah, the Vatican and Washington, holy scripture and law books, global and local, love and resentment: The Noorderlicht Photofestival 2007 investigates what happens when faith meets the world around it, where the collisions of different value systems lead to friction.

Act of Faith is an international group exhibition that will be accompanied by a special catalogue. Previous main exhibitions of the festival have drawn enthusiastic responses and are now touring all over the world.

Submissions can be sent directly to the curator: wim@noorderlicht.com

some of my beauty, my world. help an ill girl.

I have been tremendously ill, with constant ER emergencies and hospital admittances. it has been continuous for months now and the bills are outrageous. photography has always been an enjoyable, passionate hobby, but now I must make it as an occupation, because it is all that I have. I am unable to work due to chronic fatigue and other physical illnesses and so I can only make an income through photography. finally I got my push. lately I have been scraping away with only $600 a month from DSHS.

so please take a look and see if there is anything that you enjoy.

My new website is finally finished.
If you have a chance to check it out, please let me know how it functions in your browser.
We are still working out the bugs and would appreciate any feedback you can give us.
I designed the site in photoshop, but my husband Ilia made it work. It was a big learning
experience for me. I’m just happy to have some new work up, and a better website.

Drag King performance

Hi

I participate in the exhibition "Democracy and Desire", masterminded by the Swedish artist Per Hüttner. The exhibition will take place at Vacio 9 in Madrid during 23rd of November 2006 to 8th of January 2007. The show does not quite work like other exhibitions. It will start out like a traditional photography exhibition, but during the run of the exhibition more and more texts and images will be added to the walls of the gallery. The exhibition will thus not be completed until it is over and You, the visitor to the gallery, are also encouraged to bring material that you feel is relevant to the topic to be included in the exhibition (more info about how this is done practically can be found on the website www. democraciaydeseo.com)

In conjunction with the exhibition I and my colleagues will do a series of events. The events, just like the exhibition, aspire to create a discussion about democracy and desire and how the two refer to one another.

I will arrange a Drag King performance which will be accompanied by a workshop. I think that Drag is a strong and significant expression that raise several questions about sexuality and who we really are. My purpose is to toss and turn concepts like gender, sexuality, feminism, lust and desire. I am looking for contributions and Your input is of greatest importance for me. I am very eager to get in touch with people, preferably in Spain/Madrid that is involved in these in Drag King activities or similar. If you are interested or know a group or person who would like to participate I would be eternally grateful if you could e-mail me at kakfras@gmail.com or forward the information to your friends and colleagues. The events will take place the last week of November. So I need to hear from you very soon.

Best regards
Camilla

Hey there, I'm new to tribe and I'm seeking advice from artists- I'm currently in my first semester of graduate school, for an MAT in art ed. I particularly like ceramic work and wheel throwing. I'm feeling a pull towards switching into the MFA program here for ceramic sculpture, but I'm having doubts as to whether I can do it. My impression of the MFA is that it's all very intense and difficult. I was a BA sudio art in undergrad and I feel a little ill prepared for an MFA program, but I want it. Is it enough just to want it? Any tips? Thanks so much! this is a great resource.

festival, twonotten, and this is your opportunity to be part of it.
Submissions are now being called for from digital artists who wish to
showcase their work. The final venues for the festival are to be
confirmed, although we can announce that the bargate monument gallery
of work you
are submitting.
not
essential).
- The dimensions of your piece(s).
- Any technical requirements / specifications the piece(s) may require
(including equipment needed or equipment being supplied by you). Some
equipment is available, but the organisers welcome the use of artist's
own
equipment for the exhibition.
- £10.00 entry fee per artwork in order to cover administrative and
insurance
costs. Please make all cheques payable to the organiser's 'a space'.
it's been quite a while since I have used this tecknique ... so I'd probably need a bit of guided advice
is there any place that offers ther facilities up to artists or short workshops that do not cost a fortune? ( as i fall within the starving artist catagory)

Help! What to charge?

I have the opportunity to do some contract work for a game company making icons for their UI, but I have no idea what to charge for the work.
Do I charge by the piece? each one is a tiny 32X32 pixel size, and it depends on the complexity of the subject matter as to how long it will take me to do it. (usually no longer than 45 minutes to an hour)
They will need hundreds of icons. I have never done contract work so I am confused as to how to go about the "money" end of all this.....by the piece? by the hour? (and if so, how much per hour?) ......help! :-P

Structural / Kinetic / Pyro Engineer ---> Playmate + $

As a licensed architect and sculptor, I often find myself drawn to projects on the edge...
Sometimes, they have limited budgets...
Sometimes, they pay nicely... and hence I can do the others pro-bono...

I have engineers that I work with 'professionally', whom are quite good and even experimental, but their motivation is not simply to PLAY and HAVE FUN.

There are times when I need to hover large pointy things in the air over a crowd, kant out walls that taper below the 'safety factor'...

I am looking for structural / kinetic engineers, especially in the Pacific Northwest [or digitally savvy], that would like to play on projects where we would sometimes get paid, and sometimes not...

Look forward to collaborating with you!

Ciao,
