  I have to say that in the year since this was posted, it surprises me that no one seems to have much interest in this religious expression of suspension and mortifications.

    I did a little internet reading and found numerous references to mortification of the flesh, including piercings, but nothing specifcially about Thaipusam suspension. Perhaps you could tell us something about how this event is celebrated in America, and if there are any related activities in the Bay Area? When is the full moon, anyway?
