''Emergency Winter Heating/Utility Assistance Program for the Elders, Disabled, and Seriously Ill.''

Winter in South Dakota started early Autumn 2008 and has been
exceptionally brutal with days and nights already breaking many records
for below 0*F temperatures and reported wind chill factors defying
comprehension at -72*F.

On the Pine Ridge Oglala Sioux Reservation, this has set even the
most solid of reservation organizations scrambling for heating fuel.
Add to the problem a 33% increase in propane costs this year and it has
become a very tenuous situation.

Sadly, like everywhere, it's always the elders and sick who are the most at risk.

Still there are many qualified elders and disabled from the Reservation
on a waiting list for assistance.

Bitter cold temperatures and snow still persist and are expected to
continue well into March 2009.

But with the early onset of winter and the blizzards and extended frigid
temperatures creating extreme need, funding is low or depleted
at this point for most of them.

The ultimate goal will be the programs provided which will continue
to keep people alive and warm, one family at a time.

Seeking Gay Male Participants for Research on Spirituality and Homosexuality

My name is Hayden Reynolds. I am spiritual, a gay man, and a graduate student at the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology in Palo Alto, CA. I am conducting research in fulfillment of my Ph.D.

The research centers on the stories of men who believe that their gayness is integral to their spiritual development. I will be interviewing gay men about a time in their life when their understanding of their gayness shifted from being solely physical to having spiritual meaning as well.

Being involved in research of this nature can be highly beneficial. Participants will be asked to reflect on their spiritual development and on their gayness. This kind of introspection gives you the opportunity to see where you have come from and can help you to see where you may be going. The time commitment is less than 5 hours, which are broken into separate time blocks for the smaller tasks of the research. The longest of the blocks is less than 2 hours.

You will be a great candidate if you…

• live in the San Francisco Bay Area

• are biologically male

• identify as gay

• are on a conscious spiritual development path

• have made a shift in understanding about your gayness from being solely physical to also spiritual in nature.

• are able to identify and speak about the period of time when the shift was most present in your life.

8th Annual Shaman's Gathering..... THE CALL

The 8th annual Queer Shamanism Gathering will be held between August 15th-24th, 2008 @ Zuni Mountain Sanctuary in northwestern New Mexico.

The Stewards of the sanctuary are putting out a call for energy assistance in this endeavor.

This years proposed and requested possibilities include -- Storytelling, Heart Sharing; Sweat Lodge; Positive Tea; Playback Theater; Acoustical Music Circle, Divination Studies, Desert Walkabouts / Visionquesting ; Massage, Energy Balancing, Claycrafting; Desert astronomy; entheogen discussion; body/energy playgroup; BDSM workshop, desert spirit rain dance; Morning/Evening Yoga; Incense Making; Herb Wildcrafting; Poetry ReadingRants, permaculture and various happening and on-going infrastructure projects.

A Know-Your-Talent Show Multi-Media Arts Exhibit is planned for the Wednesdays (in the middle of the happening) as a benefit for the sanctuary and the neighboring community. Help make this your gathering by letting us know where your interests are and how you would like to plug your energy into the mix.

Plenty of tenting areas are being prepared by faeries for camping on Camp Hill as well as more secluded permaculturely friendly areas on the land. The RV parking is also available for persuns wishing to camp nearer the road. Food and water will be provided by the sanctuary with vegetarian meals prepared and served by volunteer attendees. Please notify us of any dietary restrictions, allergies or other health concerns or with special needs we should know about.

A Book Club for Spiritual Growth

Have you ever felt that being homosexual, bisexual, or transsexual is a good thing rather than an abomination?
Have you ever thought that you exist the way you are for a reason rather than as an abnormality?
Have you ever considered that being gay, bi, lesbian, or trans might be a gift rather than a burden?

Chances are you haven't because these ideas aren't modeled for us. What if you could explore these ideas for yourself in a safe and supportive environment?

This book club is a gateway to embracing yourself as a queer being. We do this by exploring the writings of those who've journeyed ahead of us. Our vision is that each of us in the group move toward a greater understanding and acceptance of ourselves as queer beings. We hold a sacred space where personal sharing and deep listening are practiced. The goal for each of us is to move closer to being able to say YES to the questions above.

This book club is just like every other book club in that we read books. We differ in the way that we work with the material. Each week we bring more than our thoughts, we bring our experience of how the books are affecting us, changing us, and challenging us. We are asked to go deeper into the material. What made our hearts joyful and what made our hearts ache?

We will meet twice a month on the first and third Monday evenings. We begin on March 3rd and we will meet at the First Unitarian Church of San Jose.

Hey guys,

I'm wondering if any of you are going to Pantheacon this year. I've seen some of you around in years past, and wanted to meet you. I'm kind of shy about aproaching strangers. This year I'm making the effort to introduce myself, so that I can make some new friends.

I'm a pagan gay guy. I live down here in San Jose. I'm technically still a part of the gardenerian tradition, but I haven't practiced with them in years. I guess I'm a solitary practitioner. I'm not strictly wiccan either. I'm more guided by working with Spirit, spirit guides and ancestors. And as I'm sure you are aware that can take you in many, hard to define or label directions.

I'm also cute, smart and have a great sense of humor. Although my icon's looking a bit distorted right now!

I'd like to meet and hang out with some of you guys at the conference if you'll be there. I'm looking for more friends, especially gay men.

This is the first year that I've signed up for the whole conference and intend to make the most of it. Thus I'll probably be there each day.

London based music project for gay/queer men

I'm a queer/gay man training as a music leader with CM Ltd, looking to create a project for my peers, 40+ age group, addressing the need for grass-roots (as opposed to commercial/scene) music making, exploring group dynamics, 'community' and any other content agreed by the group that will aid creative music making. Vocalists and musicians of any level welcome, including those with no previous music education. No fees. This is intended as a pilot project to bring together men/musicians who would not usually have the chance to meet up and explore.

Ostara Is Upon Us
Vernal Equinox: Tuesday March 20th 2007@ 8:07 pm est

The vernal equinox, the world is poised on the brink, suspended between the cold months and the new warmth of the growing season. The world is coming alive with green shoots and animals seeking mates. Ostara is one of the Lesser Sabbats, usually celebrated anywhere from March 19th to 21st. Some celebrated on the fixed date of March 25 (Lady Day), while others celebrate on the next full moon (a time of increased births). While the equinox is a solar holiday, Eostre is a lunar goddess. This may be viewed as symbolic of the goddess (the moon) and the god (the sun) coming together in completion. Other names by which this Sabbat may be known are Oestara, Esther, Eostre's Day, the Rite of Eostre or Rites of Spring, Alban Eilir, Festival of the Trees, and the Bacchanalia. The Christian holiday of Easter is determined as the first Sunday after the first Full Moon after the Vernal Equinox.

According to the Venerable Bede (673-735), the Anglo-Saxons called the fourth month "Esturmonath" for the goddess Eostra. Her festival became the celebration of Christ's resurrection when Anglo-Saxon and German peoples were converted to Christianity. While English and German Christians still attach the name of Eostra to their most sacred holiday (Easter or Ostern), other European languages base the name on the Hebrew word "pasah," to pass over, reflecting the Christian holiday's Biblical connection with the Jewish Passover.

All cultures living in temperate climates celebrate the coming of spring with rituals and festivals. This was one of the most important of spring festivals among pre-Christian Germanic tribes, dedicated to the goddess Ostara, a goddess associated with the "east" and thus "dawn" and "morning light." Ostara is a time to celebrate the renewal and rebirth of Nature herself, and the coming Summer. Light and darkness are in balance, as are masculine and feminine energy, yin and yang. Ostara is a fertility festival celebrating the rebirth of the God and the awakening of life from the Earth. Some Wiccan traditions worship the Green Goddess and the Lord of the Greenwood.

The Spring-cleaning tradition derived from the old witches who engaged in a cleansing each spring followed by setting up a hedge of protection. All motions involving scrubbing of stains or hand rubbing the floors should be done "clockwise." This custom aids in filling the home with good energy for growth. Another Spring tradition for ancient pagans and magicians was to dig a small trench around the outer perimeter of their home. At each quarter they would bury an egg. A modern practitioner might also add iron, old rusty nails, metal keys, old razor blades, pins and needles or witch bottles filled with the above items to diffuse magical attacks and spiritual negativity. (If you are unable to dig a perimeter, you can improvise by placing iron keys above your door, and pentacles and sigils drawn on pewter or parchment paper under your carpet or floorboards.

As a time of cleansing and renewal, Ostara is an excellent time to begin some new project. It is an excellent month for prosperity rituals or rituals that have anything to do with growth. Spells for improving communications, fertility, and abundance are especially strong at this time. Some Pagan customs include ringing bells and lighting new fires at dawn for cures, renewed life, and protection of the crops. A common belief in nineteenth century Germany touted the curative properties of water drawn early on Easter morning. One nearly universal craft is decorating hard-boiled eggs.

Eggs have long been a symbol of rebirth. They have been found among the grave goods of Anglo-Saxons, within the tombs of the Egyptians, and were placed on the fresh graves of the deceased Greeks. In ancient time, eggs were gathered for use in the creation of talismans and ritually eaten. The gathering of different colored eggs from the nests of a variety of birds has given rise to two traditions still observed today, the Easter egg hunt and coloring eggs in imitation of the various pastel colors of wild birds. Some believed that humankind was inspired by watching birds weave nests to begin weaving the first baskets. This is perhaps the origin of the association between colored Easter eggs and Easter baskets.

The custom of coloring eggs seems to be limited to the Germanic countries, Slavic countries, and America. In Scotland and Ireland, the custom is virtually unknown. Each spring in Germany, bakery windows are filled with elaborately painted eggs. Eggs are also hung from flowering branches to make "egg trees." Easter is celebrated in Germany more enthusiastically than it is anywhere else in the world with decorations up a good month before the festival. There are parties, egg hunts, and other celebrations weeks in advance of Easter itself.

In many places, it is traditional to keep Easter eggs or shells all year to ward the family and cattle against harm. They are also used specifically as a charm against hail and lightning. For this reason, great care and thought goes into the creation of egg decorations, egg-trees, boiled and decorated eggs for eating, and hare cakes.

Eostre is a goddess of the moon, an ancient measurer of time. The lunar month of 28 days gives us thirteen periods in 364 days, equivalent to the solar year. The hare, though viewed as a symbol of fertility, is also a symbol of the moon. Ixchel, the Mayan Goddess of the moon, midwifery and weaving, has a rabbit totem. Mexican panels of 600-900 AD show her giving birth to and suckling a rabbit, and another shows the rabbit representing phases of the moon.

The Egyptians called the hare Un, which means open, to open, and the opener. The month of April, the first month of the spring season, comes from the Latin “to open.” Un also means period of time. The hare as "opener" symbolizes the New Year at Easter, and fertility and the beginning of new life within the young. Since the hare can sleep with its eyes open, the Romans equated it with vigilance and believed that rabbits watched over everything. According to one story, Buddha placed the rabbit in the moon after it voluntarily gave itself as food for one of Buddha's hungry friends. In another, a rabbit jumped into a fire to feed a hungry Indra and out of gratitude, Indra placed the rabbit in the moon. Rabbits were significant totem animals however and eating them was prohibited in Britain and Egypt. A Scottish superstition suggested that eating rabbit was equivalent to eating one's grandmother.

In Asian myth, rabbits and the moon are virtually identical. The Rabbit in the Moon sweeps its surface clean with bound horsetails according to Japanese stories. The rabbit pounds rice into flour, making mochi which means both rice flour and full moon. The Sanskrit word, cacadharas also means both moon, and "that which carries the hare."

Rabbits also represent immortality and vitality. Pliny the Elder stated that rabbit meat enhanced one's beauty and radiance for a week afterwards, and Chinese myth believed rabbit meat was essential for vitality. According to Chinese myth, the rabbit is a symbol of longevity. Its fur turns white at age 100 and blue at 500. In Eastern Asian myth, rabbits created an elixir of immortality. The Algonquin trickster rabbit, Manabozho, is thought to embody all life-giving energy.

In Greece, live rabbits were popular love gifts, indicating sexual intentions. European wedded couples in the Middle Ages exchanged rabbit-shaped rings. Rabbit's popularity as a sex charm or fertility totem is related to its' natural cycle. A rabbit's gestation period is approximately one month, and it tends to be the first animal to give birth in the springtime, continuing to have litters of kits during the year. In Asian folklore, a rabbit may become pregnant simply by staring at a full moon, licking a male rabbit's fur under a full moon, or running across a moon-lit water's surface.

WHEN THE SPIRIT OF SHORTAGE PASSED OVER THE PEOPLE OF WE

Just the other day, a long time ago in a world called Farawaynearby, there lived a people called the People of We. Now the People of We, all their lives and all their generations had been the slaves of the People of Them. The People of Them lived in great cities with great wealth that had been built on the backs of the People of We. The People of We had nothing of their own. They could not decide for themselves how to live their own lives. The People of We were always the victims of Them. This caused great discontentment and despair to pass among the people from generation to generation; like bitter wine being poured from one cracked vessels to another in a dark room. More than anything the People of We desired to live lives based on their own consciences; to decide for themselves their own destiny; to live lives free of the tyranny of Them. One day a prophet came to the ghetto where the People of We lived (a ghetto is the place where the People of Them kept the poor people of we so they could get out) the prophets name was Mostly. Now Mostly was mostly a righteous man and mostly respected by most of the people most of the time and Mostly, mostly knew what was going on. Now Mostly had received a great vision of a many-faceted, multi violet flower which floated in the sky. The flower had spoken to him with the voice of the great spirit; the great spirit whose name is All Of Us. The great spirit of All of Us had told Mostly that he must go to the king of Them whose name was Never and tell king Never that the People of We must go free

Mostly was very frightened by this idea because he was a shy and humble man who stuttered and disliked confrontation. But Mostly had a wife whose name was Always. Now Always, always had a heart full of love, always had a tongue covered in forgiveness and was always respected by all of the people: but most of all she always new what Mostly meant to say. So Mostly and Always determined that together they could confront King Never. Now this was no easy thing to do since King Never was surrounded constantly by his high priests who were called the Police. Now the Police were often devious and violent and it was very difficult to get an audience with King Never. Because of the horrible abuse that you would receive at the hands of the police. But after a great deal of effort and a long time in trying and suffering insults and abuse, Always and Mostly got to plead their case directly to King Never. Mostly. So it was that they found themselves in the great hall of king Never which was filled with the most supposedly wise and the self assumingly learned people in the land; who immediately began to ridicule Mostly and Always for their plane and totally unfashionable cloths. But Mostly and Always proudly ignored the abuse and approached the grey throne of NOOOO where King Never sat scowling and began plead their case. They told King Never that the Great Spirit of All of Us told them that the People of We must go free. “Never” cried King Never, which was his favorite thing to say, never shall the People of We be free because the People of We are slaves in their hearts and will never amount to anything more than to be our servants. They cannot think for themselves because their hearts and mind are empty like sheep.

So Mostly and Always proceeded to show King Never many amazing signs and wonders of the power of the Great Spirit of All of Us, they drew down fire from the sky and wind and rain they caused the very earth to shake but the Police, King Never’s high priests, planted evidence amongst the great signs and wonders that Mostly and Always displayed and this caused King Never to doubt the power of the Great Spirit of All of Us and to disbelieve. King never laughed and said, “I am not impressed with the tricks of country witches; my police have some tricks of their own” at which point Always and Mostly were promptly handcuffed and pepper sprayed. Mostly and Always despaired deeply and they prayed to the Great Spirit of All of Us. Now the Great Spirit of All of us heard their prayers. Quite suddenly Mostly and Always stood up and the handcuffs fell from them as if they were toys. Their close magically flew of them and as they stood their shining and necked they began to spin round and round with their hands upraised chanting in a unknown tongue; for this was the most sacred manner of prayer amongst the people of we. When the police tried to approach a great circle of flames came up around Mostly and Always to protect them. Now all of the supposedly wise and self assumingly learned people in the great hall of king never had NEVER beheld such a sight. They held were spellbound and no one spoke a word for a very long time. It could have been days; it could have been hours no one knows how long they stood their. Then magically Always and Mostly began to float out of the room up and out the highest window giggleling and laughing like little children as they went, because they had never floated out a window before and they rather enjoyed it.

Now the great spirit of all of us descended deep into the underworld. There, deep in the center of the world where the furnace of creation is kept, the Great Spirit of All of Us found a terrible ally who was from the foundation of the earth, whose name I can hardly bring myself to utter, the terrible spirit named I’m Sorry There’s Just not Enough! Now the terrible spirit of I’m Sorry There’s Just not Enough was the spirit of shortage, of famine, of mistrust, and of greed. The Great Spirit of All of Us set the Spirit of Shortage on the face of the land. Meanwhile Always and Mostly floated back to the ghetto and warned the People of We what was to happen. Mostly and Always told the People of We to go to their homes and light great fires in the hearths of their homes and that they should do the ancient shuffling dance of their people round the hearths in the center of their homes and they should focus on their intent, their great shining intent to be free and that they should sing new songs of their intent. Now the light of their songs was so bright and so beautiful and their intent so pure it was like the light from that one candle that gently and persuasively can hold back the endless tides of night.

That night the Spirit of I’m Sorry There’s Just not Enough moved over the great cities of Them and every home where shortage deceit and greed already dwelled in the hearts of the people; there the terrible spirit of I’m Sorry There’s Just not Enough laid the people to waste. But in the homes where the fires were lit and the people danced and sang their new songs, the Spirit of Sorry There’s Just not Enough found no place and Oh the weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth that was heard that night in the Great cities of Them.

In the morning when the People of We peered out from their homes and saw the terrible destruction that had been visited on the great cities of Them. The people of We saw their chance and fled into the wilderness. When the People of Them saw that the People of We had fled they rallied their forces and pursued them to the edge of the great waters which are called The Sea of The Fear of The Unknown. Now the terrible Sea of The Fear of The Unknown was for each person what he or she feared most. Some looked into the waters and saw a great sea of flames. Others looked into the ocean and saw a great pit of snakes and still others heard the hungry cries of their children. Now Mostly and Always told the people they must sing their bright burning songs of intent and so the people joined hands and began to sing. And the power of their songs turned the Great The Sea Of The Fear Of The Unknown into shimmering flower petals which gently floated into the sky. As the People of We passed through the shimmering curtains of flower petals they could pluck them from the sky and eat them and the petals had the power to heal their hearts of their many generations of slavery. But when the People of Them came to the edge of Sea of the Fear of the Unknown they did not have songs to sing. They had only fear and the lust of tyranny in their hearts so the great waters closed in around them and they were never heard from again.

The People of We by and by came to their promised land, a land so full of abundance, that equity and love passed amongst the people like honey being poured from one cut crystal jar to another, when lit and warmed by the morning sun. So it is that every year the People of We celebrate a great feast. Teach their children of the People of Them and their many generations of slavery. Teaching their children of the power of The Great Spirit of All of Us and how they had been delivered by the power of their intent. Now Mostly and Always had given the people a tradition where at their great feasts they always set one extra place at every table, one more place then there were people at the feast. Because Mostly and Always had told them that one day one of THEM just might show up and that this is not something that the People of We should fear. In fact they should hope and pray for the People of Them to some day make it across the great unknown to have their hearts be chanced by the Great Spirit; because the Great Spirit had made the People of We a promise; that HERE in the Land of We there would always be just enough for all of us.

I just had a really good solution for the immagration issue as well as left coast's unhappiness with the United $tate$, we must move towards secession from the old United $tate$ and form our own country, maybe the Provinces of Jefferson like the mythical country they speak of in Oregon. We could include all of the left Coast from Alaska to the Baja Pennisula, so our kind and loving neighbors to the south Could finally be included in the region they have invested so much in, (they do work like slaves right now because of American Colionial Capitialism). I mean it seems to be the best option at this point the news media and the governement seem to totally disagree with are quote unqoute "ideals." Well screw them, they're idiotic destruction, they're money drivin system religious hypocracy. They can live in thier hate mongering war zone, this country along with England, and Rome has created A sick society of vile self serving swine.....
We can start creating our utopian dreams?!......What are they gunna do, we have all the Tech in California! The entire left coast is where 70 percent of all organic food in North amerikkka comes from, we have all the innovative speakers, thinkers, artists, dreamers and we'd have a lot more if people were truly free to explore themselves and they're people! So screw the U$ and it's warmongering religion of haterd, Let them build they're HELL ON EARTH! Imagine an entire country devoted to logic, or spirituality where all religions and philosophies are exchanged freely, imaging lush country side where you pick an grow your own crops, forests that sit undisturbed except for minor use by hikers........and the same amount of Taxes they are charging for War with, now could go towards supporting these things as well as unified health care, free multifacited "free thought" education for all. The programs for the Arts and Cultural studies could inspire other places and perhaps the old U$ into a new way of thinking, we would be an example beyond they're fears a ray of pure light and hope for all the world to see. Sure we'd still work but not as hard and for a more localized system that we would have a true consensed say in. By making education options a priority everyone could find diverse ways to learn the trades they want to know, everyone could take turns doing the different jobs they have become interested in.
We must help the wealthy digress into a more simplictic way of life by showing them what fun they could have without money, by having festivities on a regular basis to celebrate life, where everyone brings somthing "To the Table" to share from whatever work they harvest wheather it be food or technowledgy both will be balenced in equality, then we would all truly I mean truly be wealthy. A life built upon the celebration of life!!!!!!
This is what all people in our Provences of Jefferson would work for joy adventure, storytelling, music poetry dance, all facits of self discovery and happiness and to help others explore those things.........We have our Green economy, we must empower it to overgrow this wicked evil system, this Bad Patriotic delusional spell. I love places that are rustic and have character. I am an easy going guy into reading, music (mostly old blues, R&B, jazz, alternative and 70's pop), entheogens, yoga, meditation, kirtan, gardening and nature walks (lovely shrooms to be found). I am responsible and respectful and although myself a vegan I have a "live and let live" attitude.

strucuture and faeries..

I have been sitting with this topic since i left the short mountain dance. SOme elder folks in the pavillion at the dancementioned we (faes) needed more strucuture. Recently i was talking to rosie d and harry hay popped up, reminding me through rosie that the naraya tradition is goodbecause it sho native people claiming power with spirit..but that faeries need their own access to their own power. So back to the topic do faeries need structure or dowe claim our own elusive strucutre already.

i believe we have own strucuture by how we deal with so many different people in our community and help so many on the margins. As faeries i beleive we love our people more communally than any other tribe probably, even if it is sometimes in a shady way, our talk is what keeps us together. But what type of otherstrucuture might be good for us, and how do we work with the knowledge that our naraya farie elder brother sistas gave us and still keep our integrity...

would love to hear other peoples input andbegin the conversation around....

Wolf Creek?

I have a question: are any of you who were at the ShortMt. Dance planning on going to Wolf Creek as well? After last year's Dance at WC I had the initial burst of inspiration to get to another dance again as quickly as possible, but as time went on i starting thinking, "holy holy fuck, maybe once a year of that kind of blasty energy is all i can handle without going a lil bit batty"....

... and i still haven't figured out how people jump into that circle as frequently as some of us do....

this is another way of asking: who's gonna be at Wolf Creek?
