Hi Fellow Humboldt Muffins,

First -- the fun stuff which can be asked of any HSU students & graduates:
would you recommend any extracurricular classes? how about specific teachers? Fencing, yoga, stilting, mask making, etc.. I'd love to take something fun/artistic/exercise related.

Second -- for english majors & minors:
i'm thinking about retaking a course in english theory (can be any course -- as long as its theory) & i'd really appreciate any recommendations as far as professors & courses go. I looked at the HSU schedule & to make it easier, here's what is being offered with theory officially in the title (as i don't have a catalogue, i cannot find out what officially counts as as theory course):

ENGL 406 - Theory of Composition with Stacey, David E.
ENGL 406 L Technology in English with Stacey, David E
ENGL 420 Critical Theory with Creadon, Mary A.

If you know of anything else that counts as an upper division english theory course that is being offered in the spring, i'd be so happy if you could share any thoughts & knowledge with me. I'm planning on speaking to my dean & the dean of liberal arts at HSU as well, but if there's someone very helpful in the department, i'd appreciate a referrral. Sometimes departments can be a wee bit difficult to navigate.

Thanks again!

Mind you, it's been a while since I've been a student! However, I highly recommend Creadon's class in Critical Theory. I took it as an undergrad and was challenged in just the way I needed to be in order to not only learn, but grow. I ended up TA'ing the same course in grad school with her. Again...challenging, but OH sooo fulfilling.

Is English 320 being offered? That's a staple---practical criticism...really depends on who you take it with...it can be an excellent class for improving not only your interpretive skills, but writing also.

If I remember correctly, the 406's are colloquims...thus, they are only one unit. The style is usually very seminar like, and actually extremely worthwile. It's a chance for professors to actually teach what they are specialized in---because of that interest, the dynamic of the class is more involved, and you see the best of what an instructor has to offer...amd what they are currently researching.

"History of the English language" is an absolutely amazing class! If it is being offered with Professor Johnson (he's great for anything linguistic---but might be retired now---like I said, It's been a while since I was in school), I recommend taking it just for your own fulfillment! (Sorry, I don't remember the reg number...)

Another heads-up...the MATW program is fantastic. It's one of the few grad programs that offers an MA in composition theory---usually you have to go for a phd to find this sort of instruction...

However, as a warning, many great proffessors that made the english dept. what it is now, have since retired. And since then, the dept has been drastically cut financially. In fact, I just found out that they are closing the writing center (where students go for help with papers, etc)...because of these cuts. This news broke my heart---that was my employment throughout grad school, not to mention, some of the most fulfilling work I've ever done...but hey, those new decorative arches, ahem, are a brilliant way to spend the universities money, eh?!

Anyways, WELCOME TO HUMBOLDT!!! Good luck with your choices...I'm eager to hear your thoughts and reactions to the courses you choose...

I love Arcata, I'm sure you will too!
