question about burning man

i live in florida and for the past three years have come out to burning man from here.

this year i will be attending humboldt state in the fall and i've noticed that burning man will be going on during the second week of classes there.

is burning man popular with students at humboldt? do people skip classes to go? is this common? or no? how stressed is attendance, specifically in the theatre arts department if anyone knows?

thanks for any info.
Housing for Mellow Student with FULL FINANCIAL AIDE

To the Humboldt Community,

I’ll be arriving in Arcata January 11 and attending HSU starting January 16.

I HAVE FULL FINANCIAL AIDE.

I need a house that will allow me 4-7 days of grace period so I can move in and subsequently receive my funds.

About me: I’m 26, going for a BA in Theatre Arts…very mellow and flexible, love animals, and I’ve lived in cooperative housing for several years in Berkeley. I’ve cooked bomb meals, cleaned mad house, and lived in harmony with folks from all backgrounds.

Will someone take a sure-shot chance on me and offer me housing?

I’m grateful for your good faith.

Thanks,

Michael

Transferring to HSU & would love recommendations!

Hi Fellow Humboldt Muffins,

First -- the fun stuff which can be asked of any HSU students & graduates:
would you recommend any extracurricular classes? how about specific teachers? Fencing, yoga, stilting, mask making, etc.. I'd love to take something fun/artistic/exercise related.

Second -- for english majors & minors:
i'm thinking about retaking a course in english theory (can be any course -- as long as its theory) & i'd really appreciate any recommendations as far as professors & courses go. I looked at the HSU schedule & to make it easier, here's what is being offered with theory officially in the title (as i don't have a catalogue, i cannot find out what officially counts as as theory course):

ENGL 406 - Theory of Composition with Stacey, David E.
ENGL 406 L Technology in English with Stacey, David E
ENGL 420 Critical Theory with Creadon, Mary A.

If you know of anything else that counts as an upper division english theory course that is being offered in the spring, i'd be so happy if you could share any thoughts & knowledge with me. I'm planning on speaking to my dean & the dean of liberal arts at HSU as well, but if there's someone very helpful in the department, i'd appreciate a referrral. Sometimes departments can be a wee bit difficult to navigate.

Thanks again!
~Mary Bee

I'm selling all my Xbox and Gamecube stuff! Remember
that you can buy one thing, many things, or
everything. If you want the whole package, it comes at
a discount price: $450. All games, systems, and
accesories are in good condition and work perfectly
(unless otherwise stated). TELL YOUR FREINDS! Here is
the big list:

Xbox Stuff ~

1. $120 - Microsoft Xbox video game system (cords
included)
2. $10 each - Five Xbox controllers (the slim type,
not the big huge one). One of them is kind of glitchy
and scratched up, but the others work and look
perfect.
3. $10 - Xbox DVD remote control
4. $10 - Official Halo 2 Strategy Guidebook
5. $10 - Official Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Guidebook (for PC and Xbox)

Xbox Games (all games have their manuals, unless
otherwise stated)~

1. $15 - Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (this is the
version that was released before the whole Hot Coffee
controversy got big, so if you had the right cheat
device, you could access the sex minigame if you
wanted to)
2. $15 - Halo 2
3. $15 - Forza Motorsport (comes with Xbox Live Arcade
Disc). I have two copies of this game, by the way.
4. $15 - The Sims 2
5. $15 - Star Wars Battlefront 2
6. $15 - Jade Empire
7. $5 - Halo 2 Multiplayer Map Pack (includes 9 new
multiplayer maps that weren't in the original game,
plus some DVD-like extras)
8. $15 - Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
9. $15 - Halo: Combat Evolved
10. $5 - Phantasy Star Online: Episode 1$2 (I got this
used, so it has no manual and the disc quality isn't
that great. Not only that, but you NEED an Xbox Live
account to even start playing it.)
11. $10 - Burnout Revenge (I got this used, so there
is no case or manual, but the disc quality is fine)

Gamecube Stuff (all Gamecube accesories and games are
in mint condition unless otherwise stated)~

1. $70 - Nintendo Gamecube video game system (platinum
colored; cords included)
2. $10 - Gamecube memory card (it holds about 50
blocks of data, which is barley enough to hold two or
three game saves)
3. $10 - One Gamecube controller (platinum colored)
4. $15 - One Gamecube Wavebird wireless controller
(it's a little scratched up, but it works perfect)

Gamecube Games (all games come with their manuals)~

1. $15 - Super Smash Bros. Melee
2. $15 - The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
Speak Out - Local Rape, Sexual Assault and Sexual Violence

Hopefully you have heard a lot about sexual violence during the past couple of weeks. For most, this was probably due to the recently publicized rape at HSU or Take Back the Night activities. Other friends of mine have recently been accosted by individuals spewing sexual slander or had those close to them experience the most common types of rape – those by perpetrators who are known by their victims. Unlike allusion of the comments made by the Vice President of Student Affairs in response to the recent knife-wielding stranger rape, one category of rape is not better or worse than another – rape is rape.

Rape is also not a once in a great while occurrence in Humboldt County. It is the silence about these frequently occurring rapes that allows women to continue to feel both victimized and alone. Women who are raped by people they know often deal with victimization not only of their person, but also in their extended emotional and relational interactions. They are also more likely to feel like it was their fault, or that they could’ve done something to prevent it.

If you have a story to share, anonymously or otherwise, about yourself or someone close to you who has experienced sexual violence, I urge you to do so here or in another public arena where you feel comfortable. Hearing the stories of other women and seeing the common threads that run through them helped me to deal with emotions associated with rape and to see that my victimization was not rare and was not my fault. Men, please feel free to post your stories as well. Thanks for sharing: Silence perpetuates violence and victimization.

700,000 women are raped and/or sexually assaulted in the US each year – that is over 50 million during the lifespan of the average American. Unless you live in a bubble, you know many female victims of sexual violence.

Local Stats:
2,096 – Number of first-time callers to the North Coast Rape Crisis Team last year
1 in 12 – Men claim to have raped a woman
5% (or less) – Rape survivors who report the rape
84% - of rape victims know their attackers
1 in 4 – the number of women who will be raped in her lifetime
3,000 – number of call made last year to Humboldt Domestic Violence Services from abuse victims

HSU Orientation and Shelter

To the Tribe –

I’ll be going to HSU for their orientation from Friday 7/8 until Sunday 7/10. They have a masters program in social work that I’ve been checking out (I’m graduating Cal this summer) and it feels like the best fit. The faculty returns emails THE SAME DAY, which is unheard of at other schools. Plus, two weeks ago was my first visit to Arcata and I LOVED IT. The nature, the mellowness, the more intimate community… Never before have I met so many friendly folk that strike up conversations on the street.

So next weekend I have the option of staying in the student dorms for $62/night. They provide meals and linens and all the amenities which I don’t need and can’t afford. I'd much rather camp out on the quad.

Does anyone know of a student cooperative house in the area that would let me stay in exchange for work/cooking/cleaning and a fair donation? I’ve been living in the University Students Cooperative Association for the past 4 years and my last home was Lothlorien (the vegetarian naked one).

Also, somebody on the Greyhound mentioned The Endeavor to shower, eat, and do laundry. Are there any other places for travelers/vagabonds/prospective HSU students on a budget?

I’m grateful for the help.

Michael

Benevento/Russo Duo with special guests RANA
May 21, 2005, 8:00 PM
Description: Two guys, four hands, kaleidoscopically exploding wall of sound. 15 years of history, 200 shows per annum, famous to the underground - they are Marco Benevento and Joe Russo. Well positioned to explode this year with their ropeadope debut – best reason to buy the sun. After winning "new groove of the year" at the Jammys, and collaborating with Mike Gordon on a run of shows, the duo is grooving audiences across the country. Don't miss the opportunity to see Benevento and Russo lay down jazz and rock influenced improvisation on a hammond organ and drums. Who knew such a big sound could come out of just two guys!

Location: Six Rivers Brewery, McKinleyville , , Cost: $12
