Hi folks,

I've been on this tribe on and off for 2 years. I've had fibro for around 6 years. I went on Neurontin last June have a very traumatice life event. I know many folks here are using it. It was originally created for epilepsy. It started being recommended for pain and for mood problems.

I have very gradually been withdrawing from this drug. My doctor wanted me to try Cymbalta and I didn't see the point of using both of them.

I've been having an extremely painful withdrawal from it. I'm blogging on this. It's set for friends only, but I can copy here if you'd like. You have to be extremely careful about getting off of this drug as complete withdrawal can spike seizures. There is no mention of problems with physiologically addictive, until I started researching. I found out that, in many ways this similar to an opiate withdrawal. It's a very scary situation. I felt like I should share this with you folks. If it's helping you, I'm glad for you. If it's not, be extremely careful about stopping it.

Here's my blog,

Peace everybody

  • Well doesn't that just suck. Can't be any worse than weaning off Effexor XR. Now that was the shits!
As for the Neurotonin, I wasn't sure what it would do for me when my neuro prescribed it, but it has been managing the deep, flash point pains to a degree. Now only if it would take care of the general pains and all the nausea.
    • I had the same horrible withdrawal from Effexor. That drug RUINED my life...and I'm not one to exaggerate.

Afterwards (it should have been before!) I took a genetic test called cytochrome P450 that can tell you how well your body metabolizes certain classes of meds. Turns out that I'm a "poor metabolizer" of the class of meds that Effexor belongs in and therefore I had an unusually high amount in my system. Thus the terrible withdrawal, according to some medical experts. Now I stay away from all meds (because of my terrible past experiences), but if I ever return to meds in the future, I know to stay away from the ones in this class. I highly recommend the test, though it's not cheap. It could save major trial-and-error down the line, though.

There's info from Mayo Clinic here:

  • Its one of the warnings that is clearly labeled on Neurontin along with some other nasties too, but its the only thing that has worked for me so far. Doc titrated me off Neurontin and onto Lyrica. The Lyrica was soooo not for me. I work in the medical field where we spend a lot of time trying to find the right medications for our patients so I was pretty clear before this FMS crapola came along that:

you should never stop a med cold turkey unless a physician tells you to. You may not like what a med is doing to you and want to stop it and if that is the case you call the doc and tell him/her you aren't gonna take it anymore and why; and ask for guidelines for stopping the med safely.

I can't stress that enough to everyone; everyone reacts differently to medications and there is no real guarantee that just because uncle Frank stopped it or cousin Sue went cold turkey without a problem that you will too. It's bad enough feeling crappy with Fibro why risk unpleasant or potentially fatal side effects from stopping a medication without your doctors guidance.
