You may have Lyme Disease. I did...
(excerpt)
"There are very few symptoms where you shouldn't consider Lyme," says Dr. Cowden. "more than 50% of chronically ill people may have Lyme contributing to their condition." The situation is quite difficult now. "It's sad where we are with this disease," says Dr. Cowden. "You're supposed to go through the 'standard' treatment first before turning to alternative treatments. We need to turn this around, into a logical, integrated approach." The impetus for this change must come not only from the patients who have been classically infected by a tick bite, but by those who suffer from "unexplained" muscle and joint pain, unrelieved fatigue and cognitive impairment – and by those who are afflicted with degenerative diseases that can be caused or aggravated by Lyme. Presently, such patients will find few doctors experienced in Lyme, because of the newness of the disease and lack of understanding about it – and because those doctors who take a comprehensive approach to diagnosing and treating Lyme are commonly harassed by state medical boards, insurance companies and HMOs.

Beware - all of the tests for Lyme are not accurate. So, even if you were tested, you may still have Lyme...

Lyme Disease ( commonly misspelled as Lime or Lymes) symptoms may show up fast, with a bang, or very slowly and innocuously. There may be initial flu-like symptoms with fever, headache, nausea, jaw pain, light sensitivity, red eyes, muscle ache and stiff neck. Many write this off as a flu and because the nymph stage of the tick is so tiny many do not recall a tick bite.
Lyme Disease, SYMPTOMS & CHARACTERISTICS, a compilation of peer-reviewed literature reports
The classic rash may only occur or have been seen in as few as 30% of cases (many rashes in body hair and indiscreet areas go undetected). Treatment in this early stage is critical.
If left untreated or treated insufficiently symptoms may creep into ones life over weeks, months or even years. They wax and wane and may even go into remission only to come out at a later date...even years later.
With symptoms present, a negative lab result means very little as they are very unreliable. Read here. The diagnosis, with today's limitations in the lab, must be clinical.
Many Lyme patients were firstly diagnosed with other illnesses such as Juvenile Arthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Reactive Arthritis, Infectious Arthritis, Osteoarthritis, Fibromyalgia, Raynaud's Syndrome, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Interstitial Cystis, Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, Fifth Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, scleroderma, lupus, early ALS, early Alzheimers Disease, crohn's disease, ménières syndrome, reynaud's syndrome, sjogren's syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, colitis, prostatitis, psychiatric disorders (bipolar, depression, etc.), encephalitis, sleep disorders, thyroid disease and various other illnesses. see Other Diseases and Lyme...Relationship
If you have received one of these diagnoses please scroll down and see if you recognize a broader range of symptoms.
If you are a doctor please re-examine these diagnoses, incorporating Lyme in the differential diagnoses.
The one common thread with Lyme Disease is the number of systems affected (brain, central nervous system, autonomic nervous system, cardiovascular, digestive, respiratory, musco-skeletal, etc.) and sometimes the hourly/daily/weekly/monthly changing of symptoms.
No one will have all symptoms but if many are present serious consideration must be given by any physician to Lyme as the possible culprit. Lyme is endemic in Canada period. The infection rate with Lyme in the tick population is exploding in North America and as the earth's temperature warms this trend is expected to continue.
Symptoms may come and go in varying degrees with fluctuation from one symptom to another. There may be a period of what feels like remission only to be followed by another onset of symptoms.

Re: Consider Lyme Disease...
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 9:46 AMi got 38 of course theres also a new theory that lyme is a leading cause in FMS and while they can tone down or kill off lyme which can make a huge dent you'll still have the fms. They also said 90% of all fms cases are misdiagnosed lyme cases. so i dont know ...... -

Re: Consider Lyme Disease...
Sun, April 27, 2008 - 6:16 PMHow can you know you have Lyme (to "kill it off") if you are diagnosed with FMS or CFS? This is what happened to me.
If you don't get a proper diagnosis & think you have some other illness, it can become very difficult to get rid of it. If you catch it right away (re: Lyme) at least you can have a chance of proper treatment & will hopefully be able to get well.
You really got to look into this if you think you may have Lyme. The trouble is, is that the tests are inaccurate. Lyme is mostly diagnosed by clinical diagnoses (ie: by process of elimination with no test) by a doctor who is familiar with Lyme. Especially, in cases where people have been ill for a while.

Re: Consider Lyme Disease...
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 9:45 AMThey had been talking about how sometimes when say doxycycline doesn't work for one person, it will work for another, while others might need the arythromyacine (sp?). Some need combinations, some need it switched on off/back and forth over months-years etc...Now sometimes they are finding the problem is that with these heavy duty antibiotics, the bacteria or virus whatever bonds with it and then becomes even more resistant the longer its in your system. My friends dad just went to a lyme specialist and he was relaying the basic things to me, i know theres more i just dont know where that part of my brain just went....crap...

It's good that you let folks know. -

Re: Consider Lyme Disease...
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 11:54 PMThe tests are no good, folks! None of 'em! You have to get a clinical diagnosis - otherwise, you will never know. It has to be from a doctor who is familiar with Lyme (called LLMDs - Lyme Literate MDs). Lyme bacteria can evade the immune system & they change form when they are threatened by drugs like antibiotics or herbal treatments. I've heard they are 400 times harder to kill than syphilis which is a similar bacteria.
From my studies - it seems that Lyme may be easier to kill with antibiotics if you catch it early - like within 24 hours or so. It is very difficult to treat & many people take hardcore antibiotics for many years. I, personally, do not agree with this method but some people have good results. Many have very bad side effects from the long term use of abx. I have decided to use an herbal protocol.
Many people also has what is known as "co-infections". The ticks carry other parasites & bacteria that are often just as bad if not worse than Lyme. You also have to treat these, too.
I know this really sucks but it's important. Many people have Lyme that do not know it. Many people do not get the bulls-eye rash & have no idea they have been bitten by a tick. Lyme has been found in every state of the US & in most of the world. It is very dangerous but the media is not warning people!
Do not rule this illness out if you have Fibromyalgia or CFS. The ticks can be as small as the period of a sentence when they are in nymph form & can cause Lyme at this stage.
There's alot of info on the internet about Lyme. If you think you may have it you have to spend alot of time researching it. Sorry to say but that's the only way. Many doctors are completely ignorant about Lyme.
I was tested twice & both of my tests were considered negative by NY State standards! The tests do not mean anything unless you see a doctor who is familiar with Lyme. I'm not trying to put anyone on the spot or promote fear but this is the reality of the situation.
I hope you all get well!
