Does anyone have experience wwoofing, hitchhiking or travelling through Japan by bike? Or non-conventional travel experience in Japan in general? I've heard that it's actually much cheaper than people think it is...

hitchhiking in japan is fairly easy, although not really recommended for women traveling alone. my good friends have traveled extensively in japan and all over asia by bicycle, and are currently en route back to japan from slovenia (they're in israel now). they love japan, and receive warm welcomes from border control each time they come through. trains are expenisve in japan, and ferries are a bit, depending on what you're used to, and that becomes necessary since it is a country of islands. you can save money on accomodation by sleeping in parks~just wait until after dark and set up somewhere inconspicuous~should be fine. again, not really recommended for women traveling alone. you can also find quiet stretched of beach and sleep just into the forest without problem in many places.

    enjoy!
