Planning on doing a 6 week trip thru Central America. Prefer not to do airline baggage check in if reasonable not to. No camping planned, yet. Will be doing a lot of low budget inns, family run guesthouses, hostels, etc. Trying to pack light and buy what extras I will need along the way. Sooooo, any recommendations on pack type, size, brand or any other useful information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

check the weather closely. take about half of what you think you need for clothing. consider using a laundry mat instead of taking a bunch of clothing....or pay a laundry service. not sure how to make sure you find a "reputable one"....

learn how to pack...i have found that if you roll clothing it takes up much less space....

you can wash and put a pair of socks and hang them on your pack to dry.

multiuse clothing...instead of taking three shirts...use one that is between a really nice shirt and a hiking shirt. and a beach shirt.

laundry matts are good..better yet, ust bring some soap and hand- wash your laundry in the sink in the hotel. cheaper and you dont have to wait for the laundromat to be open to pick it up..

i have been travelling through latin america for months now and i find that my backpack is nice when im moving from bus to hotel, from house to taxi, but not totally neccesary. i could get along just fine with regular luggage and wouldnt get as many strange looks or attention from people who want to meet the "gringa" when all i want is to make it back to my hotel... regular lugage is alot more common and will make you stand out less.

A backpack 60L is best, because you have everything ON YOU! bags you set down may not stay there when you go to pick them up.
Bring a hammock with some webbing, I found hotels there had a place to hang your hammock inside your room.

Rick Steves has a free podcast about various travel tips and such. Most of his travel is in Europe, but packing lightly applies just about everywhere. There's a little video podcast from 3 June that shows what he carries in his bag "...whether for 2 weeks or 3 months." He also makes the wise suggestion that you pack your bag before leaving and go downtown to window shop for an hour. If it's awful, you might want to go home and reconsider what you're packing.

I"m a big fan of artificial fabrics made for camping and hiking. Counter-intuitive, I know, but they dry faster, are easier to wash, are lighter, and tend to wear longer. I get the ones with zip-off legs and with as many pockets as I can find. Having the pockets zipable is a big plus and discourages, but won't necessarily stop, pickpockets.
