good news: you're right. Those are Not deer poop...they're elk poops!
No but seriously, they look like shitake color/form from above. But,...from the side, the caps look to have some striation and shine which would let them out of being that. Photo not clear...inconclusive. Next time, pull one of them out of the earth, and pose it on its side in the same picture to reveal its undersides and gills for a more positive ID. The evergreens would indicate acidic soil, so that narrows the field down some.
What's the prize for guessing right?

hi Briggi - the photo was taken at a buddhist retreat center. they ask us not to kill anything when we visit there. i think they're probably talking about animal life but i don't pick anything there either. it's kind of a personal practice. elsewhere i'd have been picking like mad, knowing me.
we should go elk poop collecting sometime. yuck, yuck.

even the strictest bhuddist sects eat some rice at least, if not a bunch of vegetables... so I think you'd be safe harvesting those guys if they're still there under the tree. But don't tell them I said so... better to ask somebody about taking something from their garden.
As a point of interest, the Dali Lama hisself, as reported by members of his entourage, is fond of Big Macs!

On the other thing: elk sign has no known use to me.

besides that, picking a mushroom is like picking a berry or an apple; it's the fruiting body of, not the organism itself, which lives in the soil or tree.

Yes, however, often when gathering plants, some land rights issues may intrude... and we're having to deal with that.

yes, thanks. i'm aware of all that. at this point it's basically a mindfulness practice. i try not to disturb anything when there. wouldn't be surprised if some of the folks who live up there pick mushrooms and other things, though.

i realize i said kill in one of the posts above. disturb is definitely better.

The fruiting bodies resemble Lyophyllum decastes but it's hard to say with just those two pics. Did you get a spore print ? That really helps.

there were reasons why i didn't pick any, as explained above, but next time there i will ask permission. thanks. lots of other stuff coming up on that property as of about ten days ago, when i was last there. spore prints are fun!
