2007 HAIGHT STREET FAIR / NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT!!

Well, here the Haight Street Fair is in 2007 with a small minority of squeky wheels making some noise about our fair.

In Pablo's passing a two year old group has increased their demands on us. Some folks from the Haight Ashbury Neighborhood Council (H.A.N.C.) have heard gossip of their intentions of either trying to take over the fair or force us under their control.

Members of the Haight Street Fair Board have sat in a few meetings with HAIA, CVIA HANC (the real group that represents the neighborhood, without having to say it) and a couple of other groups that are out of the haight village or have one member Impovement Group status.

Supivisor Ross, District 5; has hosted a few meetings for us. He has been helpful in trying to create some fair ground for everyone. With all of his efforts we are still in conflict with a group that does not act in good faith towards us.

In one meeting that Ross called in city hall a member of the HAIA, Michael O'Connor (Whom is a third owner of the nightclub, THE INDEPENDENT; on Divisidaro St) spoke out strongly against the Haight Street Fair. Thanks Michael O'Conner!

We went into our ISCOTT hearing last Thursday and the president Mr. Lee put a hold on our street closure permit hearing for two weeks.

Please spread this information out!

The attack on street fairs is an increase of killing SF culture.............I love my urban city very much............and do take seriously that WE here in SF are in the middle of a culture war right now.

Brad and the How Weird Street Fair got their permits after being rejected. But with huge new demands, their time was cut from 8pm to 6pm, and Brad cannot have his fair there in 2008!

To show some support you can come down to our hearing on:

THURSDAY MARCH 22ND @ 10am SHARP!
@ 1 South Van Nes Ave. 7th Floor San Francisco

or you can email your support to:

Cindy Shamban
Department of Parking and Traffic
415. 701.4683
Cindy.Shamban@sfmta.com

Lets not let this happen guys and grrls.......we need your love and support.

http://tribes.tribe.net/graffiticore

I created a tribe dedicated to Graffiticore. It is the idea behind graffiti. Not just for taggers or stenciling artists, but those who admire it, want to learn, do other types of graffiti, whatever.

If you've got a graffiti'd soul then you're graffiticore. I want you to join too!

A lot of folks have seen the new 'art' that is getting up all over SF (and philidelphia and NY for that matter). It's an ad campaign by sony. They're paying artists to put it up. There is a foto of it in the gallery for this tribe.

I know that some artists in SF have started taking them down.

if you live in reach of oakland, you can come help in person too. just drop me a line, we'll plug you in!

so far, people are really grooving on the fact
that i am blogging with pictures and stuff
each step of the way as i make this mural.

seems like some of you might be interested in checking it out

http://p207.ezboard.com/ftheemptyroomfrm33.showMessage?topicID=17.topic

because of the timeline its not a fully participatory community mural in the traditional sense. but as i go around asking for help, this mural's community gets larger and larger.

also fascinating is this idea that the internet could be used to broaden a mural's community. i hadn't thought of that before.

anyway, enjoy!

hi. im birthing this forum that focuses mostly on art and left politics.

its all fresh and new and waiting for instigator types to help shape the place. hardly anyone in there right now but it has a lot of potential. who ever gets involved at this point would be key in developing the character of the place.

you can put pictures and stuff in each post.

im still adding a forum or two more and working on the design of the place.

High,

Please come down and check this show curated by SF legend
Damon Soule (D23) who will also be showing some new works
alongside Matt Furie and myself.
I will also be Djing along with the magnificent BreakBeatBuddah
and friends...

FRIDAY JUNE 17
Artist Reception and Opening Party
Creature Heroes
Recent work by Damon Soule, Matt Furie and NoMe
9pm - until

Mark your calendars now for the much anticipated art opening for "Creature Heroes" featuring new work by Damon Soule, Matt Furie and Nome. Celebrated San Francisco painter Damon Soule is one of the leading artists to emerge from the Bay Area's vibrant graffiti art scene. His mixed media works center around an imaginary comic universe with a widely-recognized cast of hybridized man/machine characters, each of whom continue to evolve, age and morph after nearly a decade. With exploding robots, cartoonlike animals, design riffs and urban automata, Soule's works capture the raw energy of urban life with invigorating style. This will be the artist's first exhibition since moving to New York nearly two years ago.

In addition, the show features new work by NoMe, who's formalist blob-like paintings explore the lyrical potential of graffiti and word-drawings. By abandoning the decipherable qualities or "hidden truth" of the graffiti text and focusing on the inter play of rhythmic form and pure color, the artist frees graffiti from language altogether making a kind of "sculptural creature" which owes as much to blob-design as to the discourse of urban art and graffiti writing.

Finally, local emerging artist Matt Furie makes very small and intricate drawings of his imaginary aliens, monsters, and oddly beautiful mise en sc?nes. In like manner, his cast of creatures extend beyond their often normalized settings, conjuring up familiar science fiction narratives and kitschy futuristic diasporas

9:00pm - until
Free
Preview the show during gallery hours starting June 10th every Thur-Sat 2pm-6pm
Show runs until July 7th

i'm a former graffitti artist from n.y. once i expanded beyond the realm of graf, i realized how graffitti gets no respect as an art form from most other artist.(not all, but alotof them) i would tell people that my background is in graf and i'd get either the look of digust or just looking down on me in general because in there eyes "it's not really art it's vandalism". and vandalism it can be, but in my eyes it's art first.

> Neck Face/ The Date Farmers
> Friday, January 7, 2005
> 6 - 8pm
> Free

> Neck Face / The Date Farmers exhibition
> through February 5, 2005

> Gallery Hours
> Wed-Saturday, 12-5pm
>
>
> The luggage store is pleased to present an exhibition of Neck Face; and
> The Date Farmers./curated by Darryl Smith/Laurie lazer and co organized
> by New Image Art/Los Angeles
>
> After 20 year old's Neck Face's first solo exhibition at New Image Art
> Gallery in Los Angeles, "Witch Hunt" and the subsequent publication of
> his book by KAWS, Satan's Bride!!! the luggage store/san francisco
> will feature new metal sculpturs, masks, and paintings by Neck Face.
>
> Neck Face is most known for writing NECK FACE -scrawled over the walls
> of New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco (see recent article in The
> New Yorker)..
>
>
> The Date Farmers, Carlos Ramirez and Armando Lerma of Coachella Valley
> often collaborate in their art, collage drawings, and words on
> discarded signs. Reminiscent of Mexican Revolutionary posters
> ala/Pancho Villa, as if Cesar Chavez is knocking on our door, Ramirez
> and Lerma explore the essential reality of the roots of California past
> and present culture. Their art depicts Mexican American religious icons
> and their style resembles prison art - their lettering strong in a low
> rider tradition of bold sign painting.

sometimes beauty is obvious, sometimes beauty is found in the rough edges. what syle of wall art draws you in the most?

- Airbrush
- Spray Can
- Hand painted (actual brush)
- Stickering
- Stencil
- Slap Wash (correct me on the term, it's when the art is already done and then applied with an adhesive wash. usually used like posted bills, larger pieces)
- Misc (feel free to add anything i missed)

I'm really drawn to what i refer as slap wash (again, correct me) since the artist can spend a large amount of time on the piece without being rushed. I recently posted a Light & Dark women slap wash in the photo album. You could really get lost in the details, it was like peering into a page of someone's own personal sketchbook; really nice work.

Okay all. I have been a bad bad moderator. So to appease the masses, I have made a very large contribution to our picture album today. Just finally sat down and scanned and uploaded stuff I have wanted to add for the past few months. Let me know what you think. Would love input on favorite "walls" that have been added. I really like a lot of them. Still looking for others to continue to add to the collection. Its pretty neat seeing art from all over the country in here!!! Keep adding because even though I would love to, I can't travel everywhere!

This is in large part due to http://www.muralarts.org/ check it out. and if any of you know how to make a picture stationary for e-mail in outlook, will you please tell an old lady! gracias.

what's yours? this should have some interesting results. : )

somebody in my little town near the bronx is putting up simple/cartoony watermelon slices up on buildings. i dont get it. no tag, no clues, nothin' just a watermelon slice.

*and just in general, when i first came to nyc from dc, i was quite amused by a club party i went to. when the windows fogged up, people didnt write this or that or "so and so was here" it was covered in tags instead. LOL very different city.

Hmmm... well folks, its a good thing I got a picture of the main page photo when I did. Driving past St. Sabrina's parlor of Purgatory last night, one of my friends pointed out that tar had been smeared all over it. Such a tragedy. I really thought it was a cool piece of work!

Old news perhaps, yet it seems to have a bearing on the topic. A great deal of the non-commercial wall art does not come with readily obvious message. This fact leaves the viewer with no choice but to do a bit of free association.

If nothing else the poster gallery and the links section make the site worth a look. Just out of curiosity, does anyone know of a good place to find an online gallery of the old Soviet style propaganda art?

While not walls per say, the decorated box car can be a thing of wonder. I've been living downtown next to the tracks for a while now and what I get to see rolling by can be pretty cool. The added bonus is that I don't have to get off the porch or put down my cocktail to see the show. The other plus that bears mentioning is that I've gotten to see a huge range of art work from across the nation.

I've seen tagging and wall non mural wall "art" as just that since I saw an installation done by Barry McGee at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. On that note, when did the rest of you get turned on to this form of expression?
