There is an abandoned little plot of land on my block in which people have taken to dumping their trash. Every once in a while the sanitation department comes and cleans it out. I would really like to start a little community garden there come warm weather time. Does anyone know anything about how to find out who owns the land? Have any experience with starting a community garden? Suggestions?
Thanks,
Maren

I'd go to another Community Garden & find one of their organizers.
This will be a good way to hear about their experience as well as the laws involved... Pick-up some pointers.
Try the one on Union btwn. 4th & 5th avenues in Pk. Slope.
They might even have a phone number listed on the gate of the garden.

Thu, April 10, 2008 - 6:17 PMyou could also try the lower east side ecology center -- www.lesecologycenter.org i think. they may have some leads, and may even offer workshops on it. the brooklyn botanic gardens hosts a compost project too (you can get a worm bin to compost right in your apt!), but i don't recall there being much info on the website. tho they have a little exhibit in the gardens about different types of compost bins and stuff which may be useful to you once you're ready for that step.
what 'hood are you in?
