Checks

topic posted Sat, November 17, 2007 - 1:38 PM by  Izile
OK, got a weird question. I asked both my roommates, but neither of them had a clue, and I'd rather know before I go hunting around for places.

Does anyplace (like grocery stores or a Duane Reade or Walgreens) accept personal checks?

Debit card won't be available to me until Friday, and I gotta run out and buy a couple of things after work Wednesday for the holiday.

'Scuse me, I'm not a native, or even a long time transplant. Back home every big chain business takes checks as long as they're not out of state. I normally use debit, but it just won't be available in time.

      Oops, my bad!!!

I shouldn't have jumped to conclusions.
In fact, Walgreen's DOES accept personal checks (even if they're out-of-state).
However, they said you must have your name on the check!

Since I put my foot in my mouth, I figured I owed you one... So, I did more research.
After calling Duane Reade, I found out they, too, accept personal checks.
Your name & address must appear on the check + correspond w/ your (valid) Driver's License or State I.D.
I'm gonna assume that Walgreen's is gonna want the same credentials (not just a name).

After calling a couple Keyfood Supermarkets, I was am not surprised to report that it depends
on the particular store you are shopping at; different stores may allow it & others may not,
since each one is independently owned. Also, keep in mind that although they offer cash back on debit transactions, the amount you can receive will vary from store to store.

I guess you can call Pathmark Supermarket, A&P, etc. to see if they have similar requirements.
Sorry 'bout the rush to judgement... I'm truly surprised they allow it out here. Esp. since it's so easy to get a fake I.D. in NYC.

Plus, I was reminded of that Seinfeld episode where JERRY bounces a personal check at his local bodega, and in return gets his dorky lookin' check posted near the register for everyone to see.
