Starting a community garden?

There is an abandoned little plot of land on my block in which people have taken to dumping their trash. Every once in a while the sanitation department comes and cleans it out. I would really like to start a little community garden there come warm weather time. Does anyone know anything about how to find out who owns the land? Have any experience with starting a community garden? Suggestions?

Thanks,

OK, got a weird question. I asked both my roommates, but neither of them had a clue, and I'd rather know before I go hunting around for places.

Does anyplace (like grocery stores or a Duane Reade or Walgreens) accept personal checks?

Debit card won't be available to me until Friday, and I gotta run out and buy a couple of things after work Wednesday for the holiday.

I'm 3/4 the way thru my first 2 exposures to him - "Fortress of Solitude" and a collection of short stories, "Men and Comics"....

I avoided "Motherless Brooklyn"... it was just TOO popular when it was out....

It's SO wild in 'Fortress' to read about not only the street names of my childhood of Flatbush / Downtown / Bklyn Heights, but the stores and places i remember....

But i do wonder how much of my liking his writng IS just a somewhat narcissistic thrill at feeling 'in by knowing SO much of what he's writing about.....

Man, who else has noticed the funky smell coming from the tap in NYC for the past 8 months or so? The taste is also quite noticeable!

This, at a time when Mayor Bloomberg has been bragging about the City's fabulous tap water... encouraging residents that it's not at all necessary to purchase bottled water since NYC has such clean water for free.

So, Mr. Know-it-All, is it "clean" 'cuz they're adding tons of chlorine? That's definitely one of the foul smells that has permeated the taps (this year) in my opinion. It also has a bit of "rotten egg" smell; totally grosses me out! I don't wanna shower or brush my teeth with that crap :-(

Please let me know who else smells it -- What are your thoughts?

what we can do to save Coney Island as we know it

As you know, there is a massive redevelopment coming to Coney Island. Most of what was in place between Stillwell Ave and W12th from Bowery to Boardwalk is gone....that means batting cages,go kart traxks, Ive HEARD the bumper boats. Its happening NOW folks. Because the City is reconsidering the scope what theyll allow Joe Sitt (the developer in question) to do, hes apparently playing hard ball by demolishing early. On the Boardwalk...the Lola Starr shop is gone. Dianna Carlin, aka Lola Starr, has gotten her eviction notice. As has supposedly the big souvenir shop a few doors down. That one I only HEARD about. Sitt is implementing a gag order on his tenants as part of the terms for their 2007 season leases. Anyway, theres a person on My Space calling themselves Save Coney Island. They posted this bulletin today:

Please write a letter to Planning Director, Amanda Burden

Amanda Burden is NYC's Planning Director. She plays a very important role in determining whether or not Thor Equities will get the rezoning they desire to build luxury condos on the boardwalk in Coney Island. She has made a bold stand against Thor Equities. You can read more about her position in the article that came out in the New York Observer today!

http://www.observer.com/20070312/20070312_Matthew_Schuerman_finance_newsstory1.asp

Please write to Amanda Burden to let her know that you support her position that there should be NO CONDOS in the Amusement District. The area is currently zoned C7 for Amusements only! This C7 zoning should be preserved!

You can write to her at:

http://www.nyc.gov/html/mail/html/maildcp.html

Even if it is just a brief note to show your support!

Please let her know that she has the support of the Coney Islands community!

Father of W. Indian-American Carnival dies:
http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/story?section=local&id=4959923
(Brooklyn - WABC, January 22, 2007)

Carlos Lezama, the father of the city's annual West Indian American Day Carnival, died this morning in Brooklyn. He was 83.
Officials say Lezama, who helmed the massive celebration since its humble start 40 years ago, died at Kings County Hospital after being hospitalized for an undisclosed illness.

Dubbed "The Father of Brooklyn's Carnival," Lezama served as the West Indian American Day Carnival Association's president since its inception, and watched as it quickly grew into the largest festival in the city.

More than three million people now descend on Eastern Parkway each Labor Day to enjoy performances by groups from dozens of countries.

Over the decades, Lezama kept the peace as the frenzied festival traversed Brooklyn's culturally diverse streets.

He ensured that the carnival wasn't disrupted when critics objected to then-Mayor Rudy Giuliani's participation as a grand marshal in 1995, when the carnival coincided with Rosh Hashanah in 1994 and after the August 1991 disturbances in Crown Heights that were triggered when a car driven by a Jewish man struck and killed a young black boy.

"Throughout our lives my siblings, as well as my mother, have been privileged to share my father with the million who are part of the Carnival family," said his daughter, Yolanda Lezama-Clark, who took over carnival's reins from her father 2001. "I am grateful that he has left an impressive legacy of which we all as Caribbean people can be proud."

Funeral services have not yet been announced.

Coney Island's ASTROLAND PARK sold!~

just got this on MySpace....and here goes another big nail in Coney's coffin~

ASSOCIATED PRESS

The vintage Astroland Amusement Park, one of the anchors of Coney Island since its 1962 opening, was purchased Tuesday by a developer intent on restoring the Brooklyn beachfront as a $1.5 billion year-round resort.

The Albert family, owners of the well-known park, will close the 3.1-acre attraction at the end of the 2007 summer season under the deal reached with Thor Equities. The Alberts will continue to operate the landmark Cyclone roller-coaster, which turns 80 next year, under an existing agreement with the city.

The decision to sell was "very difficult and made only after months of extensive discussion," said Carol Hill Albert, co-owner of Astroland with husband Jerome. The park was launched by her late father-in-law, Dewey Albert.

In the end, the cost of converting Astroland to a year-round operation was too steep. The family had turned down larger bids last year "in the hope of finding an alternative that would enable us to keep our current location," Albert said — but it didn't pan out.

Thor Equities plans a $1.5 billion, year-round facility in Coney Island. Although no price was given for the Astroland purchase, Thor had already spent $100 million snapping up properties along the venerable boardwalk.

Thor's plans include a mix of amusements and attractions, including a new roller coaster and a new hotel to accommodate the anticipated arrival of new tourists.

The site of the amusement park is renowned for another reason. Local legend has it that restaurateur Charles Feltman invented the hot dog there in 1874.

The Alberts, although they sold their property to Thor, retained ownership of attractions like the water flume and the Astrotower in hopes of adding some new rides and relocating to another section of the neighborhood.

The amusement park employs about 300 workers every summer, and Albert was hopeful that city and Brooklyn officials could help with relocation costs.

"The Albert family is proud to have provided so many wonderful memories for so many generations and to have been such an important part of New York's world famous Coney Island," Albert said.

I heartily commend to everyone's attention an article in today's New York Times headlined "Brooklyn Style Pizza Meets the Real Deal," available at http://www.nytimes.com/2006/11/08/dining/08domino.html

It's hard to pick from the great paragraphs, but try this one:

"We purchased our Dominos pie just a few blocks away from Totonnos on Neptune Avenue. That it was handed to us over bulletproof glass turned out to be the most authentically Brooklyn part about it. "

Brooklyn bars / breweries doing an Oktoberfest?

The time is now. :-)

Post em if you got em.

I don't think Shane and SixPoint will be doing anything, I'm still wondering how much work getting all those kegs brewed up for Atlantic Antic last weekend took. I looked at Brooklyn Brewery's schedule, and it's not listed!?!? WTF? But they've recently changed their site to 100% Flash and I think the web monkey needs his ass kicked; all fluff and slow fades and silly eye candy crap. I was waiting to see animated beer bubbles go up the screen, and then I would go find a random "web designer" and wipe his hard drive. :-) (your job is to talk clients OUT of that crap!)

Anyway, what about the good locals? Especially the "beer geek" bars like Barcade, Brazen Head, Waterfront, Spuyten Duyvil, etc...

There's always Zum Schneider on Ave C, but since I don't live in LES anymore that's one hell of a long stagger.

I decided to visit Coney Island for the first time and it was okay but not exactly your "paradise" beach or anything. It was kinda grungy ( There was broken glass in the sand....) . I read about Jones Beach in a club discussion on New York Simpatico, http://www.NewYork.Simpatico.com , and some people suggested Jones Beach as an alternative. Anyone ever been there?

Coney Island Shortcakes

or did someone say...Charlotte Russe!~
Either way, theres a new food creation in residence at my beloved Coney. Located on the Boardwalk outside ChaChas is the source of a truly deLIGHTful summer dessert treat.
Its a take on a classic strawberry shortcake...a balance of cubed or crumbled cake, strawberries, and whipped cream....rather than the layered cake, whipped cream filling, and strawberry topping.
Made with all natural ingredients, the cake is just enough of being cakey, and just enough of the outer part being a touch chewy. The whipped cream is delicate, not overwhipped into something a level or two short of being butter. Its only sweetened a touch. The strawberries are pleasantly firm, and just sweet enough that when they meld with the other components, theres no oversweetness that requires a Poland Spring chaser. Theres a really nice balance of texture on the palate. Its great for those times when you knooow you want and need a truly beautiful and decadent dessert, but dont want something overly filling and heavy.
As for the people that run the operation, Kalene and Daniel, are two of the most awesome people youd wanna spend a day or night at Coney with.
Their delights come in small $3~ and large $3~
No, I don't have any financial interest in the business.

I've just joined "Tribes" tonight. I'm looking for fellow Star Trek fans. Specifically, I'm interested in Star Trek fans who prefer Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek--TV, movies, and novels--over Rick Berman's.

I look forward to replies--if any--from anyone (not neccessarily in Brooklyn, NY) who'll never let Gene's vision die. Thank you.

Brooklyn Street Renamed "Bob Marley Blvd."

http://static.flickr.com/39/75850946_0af93a495c_m.jpg

A Brooklyn street now bears the name of a Reggae legend.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hundreds turned out in East Flatbush Saturday for the renaming of Church Avenue between Remsen Avenue and East 98th Street as Bob Marley Boulevard.
Local lawmakers, Marley fans and even the musician's children all agreed it was a fitting tribute.
"We give thanks to the people of Brooklyn, the people of New York, the people of America in general, you know; looking forward for this day, long time," said Marley's son Rohan Marley.
"He paved the way for black people. He helped us to expose our culture and our roots; that we can enter jobs without having to have our hair other than the culture that we are and the roots that we are," said Marley fan Jahmeeka Simeon. "It's great. It's an honor. It should have been done."
Born In Jamaica, Bob Marley popularized Reggae music in the 1970's.
He died in 1981 from cancer at the age of 36.
This may be old news but thought you all would like to see, since basically this is a common theme I've noticed in the slope lately, of people equating nudity with something anti-family and wanting ti "prptect the children":
Brooklyn Jazz Renaissance
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/05/26/arts/music/26broo.html?_r=1&th&emc=th&oref=slogin
ON almost any given Sunday, the trumpeter John McNeil walks out of his apartment and down a few tree-lined blocks to Night and Day, a bistro on Fifth Avenue in Park Slope. Since February, Mr. McNeil has held a weekly gig in a rear annex of the restaurant with a quartet he formed with the tenor saxophonist Bill McHenry. A hangout for neighborhood residents and a magnet for musicians, the engagement has become a fixture of Brooklyn's rich and booming jazz scene.
The rise of that scene — which, like its borough, is an assemblage of enclaves — has been one of the most significant developments for jazz in New York in recent years. (Every bit as significant as the Brooklyn rock explosion of a few years ago, with which it shouldn't be confused.) Through a growing network of low-rent spaces mostly booked by enterprising musicians, Brooklyn has assumed a vital role in the city's larger jazz culture. And the music has been a boon for listeners of all kinds, including those who have to cross the East River to hear it.
Worst Fire Since 9/11 Rages On In Brooklyn
Worst Fire Since 9/11 Rages On In Brooklyn
May 02, 2006
Firefighters are still fighting the city's worst fire since 9/11 at a vacant warehouse along the East River waterfront in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
The fire started around 5:30 Tuesday morning, then spread quickly, as hundreds of firefighters worked to gain control of the situation. The Fire Department expects the fire won't be completely extinguished for another 24 hours.
"They're warehouses and there are materials in there that are very flammable,” said Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta. “You can see the buildings themselves are all fully involved. And there was a significant collapse during the fire as well. A lot of radiant heat from the fire, so it was a difficult fire to fight. And our firefighters had to be careful how close they got."
The fire broke out at the site of the old Greenpoint Terminal Market at West and Noble Streets. The commissioner said they won't evacuate the area, but asks people to stay away as much as possible to make it easier for the firefighters.
About eight firefighters have minor injuries so far.
Smoke from the fire could be seen for miles. Rubberneckers on the FDR Drive and the long island expressway were given an unobstructed view during the morning commute. But residents said they're scared about the flames spreading.
"There's a lumberyard two blocks down, there's a park across the street, there's furniture companies over here to the right of the fire – so it's a major concern now,” said one area resident. “As you can see, it's a nice, big blaze now."
"It's scary. I don't want the flames to jump to my building, so I'm a little concerned right now," added another.
The Fire Department said there was no evidence that there were any occupants inside the building at the time.
The fire is being investigated as suspicious.
You are Loved
If you want to know how to heal, and how to become
a healing presence on this Earth, there is one simple
way: that is to know that you are loved. =Feel= how
you are loved. Know that you are absolutely worthy of
love. You will never be abandoned, not ever. You
will never be rejected, not for any reason. The love
that the universe has for you is absolutely without
conditions. You do not have to "earn" it. You do not
have to "deserve" it. You do not have to "prove"
anything. Most important of all, you do not have to
doubt your value or importance or worth to this
universe. The universe loves you without conditions,
without qualifications, and without reservations. The
love that the universe has for you is absolutely
unbounded. You can never expand your receptivity to
this love enough -- there will always be a greater love
that you can keep opening to. You are absolutely
worthy and absolutely accepted and loved and valued
and cherished by this universe. This is the essence of
healing.
If you understand and accept that you are totally
worthy and loved without reservation by this universe,
then you will naturally be a channel of this love for
others. If you doubt that you are loved, if you doubt
that you are worthy of love, if you wonder "Do I
deserve to be loved," then you cannot help but have
doubts about other people being worthy of love. If
you feel that you have to "deserve" love in order to
be loved, then you cannot help but feel that other
people must "deserve" love in order for you to love
them. If you feel that you may be rejected for your
weaknesses and imperfections and the mistakes that you
may make, then you cannot help but feel that other
people may be rejected for =their= mistakes and
=their= imperfections and weaknesses. So if you put
yourself down as not being totally worthy of love, you
re not making yourself a healing presence to others.
But by accepting love and its healing power, you
become a healer because you make it possible for other
people to begin to accept love as well..
If you know that =you= are absolutely worthy of
love, then you will have no doubts that everyone you
meet is absolutely worthy of love also. If you can
truly and fully accept the fact that =you= are loved
without reservation by the universe, then you will
know without doubt that everyone else you meet is also
loved without reservation, and you will share in that
love for them.
undertanding and acceptance of this love can never
cease to expand. As your Acceptance of this love
expands, your Acceptance of others and of the universe
will also expand. When you accept that the universe
loves you without conditions and without reservations,
then you will naturally live a love for others that is
without conditions and without reservations. YOU are
loved absolutely. This love will never be withdrawn.
That is the essence of healing.
Breathe that in...
Rent Serpico (no comments on my avatar needed here). Look carefully at the first 15 mins in what they call South Brooklyn. This is in fact Williamsburg. Then the last 30 minz or so when they are filming under the Williamsburg Bridge and on the South Side. THIS is the Williamsburg I grew up in and the Williamsburg that I still see when I close my eyes.
FYI if you take the “L” train past the second stop in Brooklyn you are N LONGER in Williamsburg and I do not care what the real estate agent tells you. Also the north side of McCarran Park is NOT Williamsburg either it is Greenpoint.
What’s funny is the boarders of Park Slope and Williamsburg keep spreading out wider and wider. If you believe what the key turning apartment agents keep saying Brooklyn will be made up of two neighborhoods soon.
dig out your fire hydrants
Hi guys...now that my snow rants are over its time for a public service message:
take a few minutes to shovel out the street side of your nearest fire hydrant. Take care of an arc of about 90 degrees.
Because its gonna take FDNY a little longer to get into a location because of the snow, precious time is gonna be lost in getting water on a fire. On top of that, if the Firefighter operating the pumper has to fight his way in through the snow to hook up to the hydrant and get water going, its gonna cost even MORE time. It might not seem like that much, but those first few minutes are super critical and can make a big difference between someone surviving and a fatality.
So before youhead out for the snowball fights and snow angel sessions...take a few minutes to help out with this.
And be super careful with space heaters if youre using them. Keep em far away from combustibles. Make sure theyre UL listed and try to get the kind that has an automatic shutoff if they get tipped over.
February 10, 2006 -- VERIZON needs a geography lesson. This week, the $87 billion, Manhattan-based telecom released the results of a Valentine's Day survey conducted by its superpages.com yellow pages service, showing that "New York City has the most candy stores, making it the sweetest city." We won't argue with that, but according to the geniuses at Verizon, the No. 2 ranking is "Brooklyn." Guys, the borough of Brooklyn ceased being an independent city in 1898. To make matters worse, No. 9 on Verizon's list is "Bronx." Verizon spokesperson Dana Russell told The Post's Philip Recchia, " 'New York' is really Manhattan. That's how people do Internet searches."
Rivals Rumble In Dumbo... extreme real estate, Brooklyn style!
N.Y. Times
By WILLIAM NEUMAN
CALL it extreme real estate, Brooklyn style.
Gordon M. Grant for The New York Times, left; Phil Mansfield for The New York Times
David Walentas, pictured in 2004,left, and Shaya Boymelgreen, pictured in 2005.
Seth Wenig for The New York Times
57 Front Street part of a dispute between David Walentas and Shaya Boymelgreen.
Two rival developers in the fast-gentrifying Dumbo neighborhood in Brooklyn have gone to battle across the lot line of their properties. On one side is David Walentas, the tenacious visionary who helped remake Dumbo as a residential hot spot. On the other is Shaya Boymelgreen, a relative newcomer with deep pockets who has become a major player in the neighborhood in only the last few years.
The two have clashed over projects before, but now their feud has blocked condo buyers in a converted industrial building at 57 Front Street, owned by Mr. Boymelgreen, from closing on their apartments. And even if they do close soon, some of them may find something else is blocked - their views - because Mr. Walentas has vowed to erect a steel barrier in front of the windows in his rival's building.
Mr. Boymelgreen paid $4.8 million for 57 Front Street in October 2001, and in early 2003 he submitted plans to the city to convert the seven-story building to 33 condominium apartments. The units went on sale in late 2004 at prices ranging from a little more than $400,000 to just under $1 million.
But Mr. Walentas owns the property next door to 57 Front Street, a parking lot that wraps around the west side and part of the north side of Mr. Boymelgreen's building, and it is along that crooked line that the dispute arose.
Six of the apartments in the back of Mr. Boymelgreen's building were designed with all their windows on the lot line, looking down on Mr. Walentas' parking lot. While six more units, in the building's southwest corner, have living rooms with windows on Front Street, all their bedroom windows are on the lot line.
That would be fine if there was an agreement between the neighbors, known as an easement, that would protect the windows. But without an easement, Mr. Walentas or a future owner could build up to the lot line, blocking the windows and putting the apartments in violation of city rules requiring access to light and air.
Mr. Boymelgreen said last Thursday he thought that an easement was already in place when he bought the building and that he didn't realize it was an issue until city officials reviewing the project asked to see the easement last summer. He said he sent his employees to look in city records, but all they could find was a 1997 paper filed with the Department of Buildings that cited a "handwritten easement dated June 11, 1900." The document was nowhere to be found.
All this time, Mr. Walentas had been watching work progress on Mr. Boymelgreen's building. He said he was aware of the easement issue but he did not bring it up with his neighbor until last September, when his son and business partner, Jed Walentas, contacted one of Mr. Boymelgreen's employees. He offered to work out a deal for an easement, according to people on both sides of the dispute, provided Mr. Boymelgreen would allow Mr. Walentas to acquire a nearby property at 45 Front Street that he has long desired. Mr. Boymelgreen is currently in contract to buy that building, known locally as the Nova Clutch Building because of the business that occupies it.
Mr. Boymelgreen refused to link the two issues and the stage was set for the developers' smackdown.
Then, as buyers in Mr. Boymelgreen's building were hoping to close on their apartments last fall, Mr. Walentas had a lawyer, Jed S. Marcus, contact officials at the state attorney general's office, which regulates condos, and alert them to the absence of an easement.
The attorney general began discussions with Mr. Boymelgreen, who responded on Nov. 23 with a proposal for several changes to his project. The units with only bedroom windows on the lot line would instead be designated as studios, he said, and the bedrooms would be renamed studies, which are not required to have windows under city law.
For the apartments in the back of the building with all their windows on the lot line, Mr. Boymelgreen proposed to cut a notch in the back wall, 5 feet deep and about 15 feet across. Each apartment would have a window in the notch, so that if Mr. Walentas or some future owner built something on the adjoining property, a sort of air shaft would be left that would meet the city's light and air requirements. These apartments would also be designated as studios.
Mr. Boymelgreen's submission noted, however, that by turning 12 one-bedroom apartments into studios, the building might fail to qualify for a city property tax break for future residents.
As a result of the changes, Mr. Boymelgreen agreed to offer all the buyers in the building the chance to tear up their contracts and get their deposits back. Brad Maione, a spokesman for Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, said that Mr. Boymelgreen's proposed changes are being evaluated.
But the submission to the attorney general included one more unusual detail. The developer had been notified, it said, that Mr. Walentas planned to install "a steel sculpture" in his parking lot "that will substantially block all of the lot line windows on the property line."
In the meantime, none of the sales in the building have been permitted to close and the buyers who have been waiting for their apartments, some of them for more than a year, remain in limbo. Eight have already pulled out and gotten their deposits back, Mr. Boymelgreen said.
Jason and Carrie Craig signed a contract in January 2005, to pay $825,000 for a fifth-floor one-bedroom apartment in the back of the building, which Mr. Craig said had "a great view of Manhattan and the Brooklyn Bridge." Buyers in the building had been promised closing dates as early as last summer, he said, but construction delays held up the closings at first and then gradually buyers like the Craigs began to suspect that there were other problems.
Mr. Craig said that after pushing for information, he finally learned of the issues with the lot line windows. Theirs was one of the units with all the windows on the property line and the couple decided in December to pull out of their contract and take back their deposit.
But Mr. Craig, a lawyer, said the damage has been done. The couple live in a one-bedroom rental in Battery Park City and would still like to buy in Dumbo, but Mr. Craig feels the market has "run away from us."
"We basically are priced out of the market for what's available now and we wouldn't have been had we not been stuck in this predicament," Mr. Craig said. One of the developments that has gotten beyond their reach is 70 Washington Street, a condo conversion a block away from Mr. Boymelgreen's building. The developer there, of course, is Mr. Walentas.
"I felt that we were caught in a turf war between the two big owners of that area while they were trying to work out their differences," Mr. Craig said.
Mr. Boymelgreen said the problems arose from an "honest mistake" and said it would be wrong to suggest he was intentionally trying to push his project through without the proper paperwork. "If I knew anything like this, if I knew I couldn't close with the buyers, why would I keep it this way?" he said. "It just doesn't make sense, the whole thing."
He accused Mr. Walentas of unfairly trying to pressure him into relinquishing the Nova Clutch Building and said he would not link that deal to the condo dispute.
Mr. Walentas acknowledged his interest in acquiring the Nova Clutch Building. He filed a lawsuit two years ago against the owners, charging they had agreed to sell it to him before they signed a contract with Mr. Boymelgreen, but the legal action was unsuccessful. He owns several other properties on the block and if he were able to combine them into a single development parcel, he said he could build an apartment building of about 12 stories on Water Street.
Mr. Walentas said there never was an easement with 57 Front Street, and he now plans to proceed with what he is calling a "sculpture" on the property line. "It's steel columns in front of the windows with plates strategically placed where the windows are, just as a little negotiation," he said.
Asked if that wasn't an extreme negotiating technique, he responded, "To sell people apartments that can't be legally occupied is a little extreme."
Plans for the sculpture were first submitted to the city last February and a building permit was issued in October.
"It frankly was designed to block those windows," Mr. Walentas said. "So we torture him a little bit."
If you have your eye on that perfect $20 million co-op, you'd better hurry.
Brokers and a leading appraiser say that the very high end of the Manhattan real estate market has been extremely busy in the last few weeks, after a lull in the second half of 2005.
Hall F. Willkie, the president of Brown Harris Stevens, said he was involved in negotiating three deals at $20 million or more in the week between Christmas and New Year's Day, which is usually a quiet time. He said two of those deals have gone to contract and discussions are continuing on the third.
Mr. Willkie said the activity was all the more extraordinary because there have been only about a dozen co-op deals for $20 million and above in the history of Manhattan real estate. Mr. Willkie said sales at the high end of the market dropped off after the middle of last year because there was a lack of inventory. The few listings available, he said, were often offered at inflated prices, even for that level. But more recently, a number of new listings have stirred interest.
"It has been remarkable," said Kirk Henckels, the director of Stribling Private Brokerage, who tracks high-end sales. He said he was aware of six co-op listings with asking prices of $20 million or more that had either gone into contract since early December or had resulted in negotiations that are still under way with serious buyers. Jonathan J. Miller, the president of Miller Samuel, an appraisal firm based in Manhattan, said the number of very-high-end deals in late 2005 and at the start of this year appeared to be ahead of the same period a year ago. If several of these deals close in the next three months, Mr. Miller said, "you could see a spike in the average sale price."
While brokers have expected high-end property sales to benefit from Wall Street bonuses, Mr. Willkie said the three deals at $20 million and up being handled by his firm were not connected to bonus money.
The '06 pack: Battling Brooklynite
(From Time Out NY)
Daniel Goldstein, 36, is not a fan of a certain headline-making local land developer. "Bruce Ratner has left a trail of broken promises all around Brooklyn," he says. Harsh words, but not surprising given that Goldstein's Prospect Heights home sits in the path of the bulldozers that would clear space for Ratner's proposed Nets Arena and high-rise complex. But while most other residents facing the effects of eminent domain got bought out by Ratner, Goldstein, a freelance graphic designer, got organized. He's a founder and steering-committee member of Develop Don't Destroy Brooklyn, the group leading the charge against the project—and he's practically made fighting Ratner a full-time job. "People think this is a done deal," Goldstein says. "Far from it." — Ethan LaCroix
Joan Maynard Dies
Joan Maynard, Helped Save Early Black Settlement, Dies
----------------------------
NEW YORK -- Joan Maynard, who fought to preserve a 19th-century settlement of free blacks in Brooklyn, has died. She was 77.
Maynard died Sunday at her home in Brooklyn, said Pamela Green, her successor as executive director of the Society for the Preservation of Weeksville and Bedford-Stuyvesant History. The cause was not disclosed.
Once a flourishing community that included New York's first black police officer and first black woman physician, Weeksville had been largely forgotten when its remnants were discovered in 1968 after historian James Hurley saw references to it in some 19th-century archives.
Hurley and a pilot went up in a small plane and spotted four wood-frame cottages hidden in an alley once called Hunterfly Road -- all that remained of Weeksville.
After an archaeological dig turned up artifacts including a slave's shackles, Weeksville was designated a New York City landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Maynard was a founding member of the Weeksville society and served as president from 1972 to 1974, when she became its executive director. Restoring the cottages and turning them into a functioning museum was a daunting task, with setbacks including a break-in by crack addicts who did $36,000 worth of damage.
"We thought it was going to take 10 years to build a museum when we started," Maynard said in a 1996 interview with The Associated Press. "Frankly, it's amazing we're still alive."
But Maynard persisted, raising funds from the government, corporations and individual donors. Her hard work was rewarded when the Weeksville houses were opened to the public at a June 2005 dedication ceremony.
Green said that Maynard was a visionary who "was persistent in her desire to make sure that young and old folks, descendants of Africans, knew their history and that it was something to be proud of and something to constantly keep alive."
"For her it was always about saving the memories of self," Green said.
Maynard was born Joan Cooper in Brooklyn on Aug. 29, 1928. She graduated from Empire State College of the State University of New York and worked as a commercial artist for McGraw-Hill and other companies.
Twice divorced, Maynard had one son, Jerome, who died before her; she leaves no immediate survivors.
The Coney Island freaks are looking for a new home.
Dick Zigun, owner of Coney Island USA, wants to rent an abandoned bank building at W. 12th St. and Surf Ave. when his current lease runs out.
If the bank building's new owner, megadeveloper Thor Equities - which has Las Vegas-size plans for Coney Island - doesn't lease the property to Zigun, his Sideshow by the Seashore and Coney Island Museum likely will go out of business.
"We have lousy options," Zigun said. "The Mermaid Parade, the sideshow and the museum - it all might just disappear in 2007."
Thor wants to build a sprawling, four-star, 500-room hotel on the Coney Island boardwalk, complete with a shopping gallery, indoor water park and a rooftop blimp landing pad.
Thor's purchase of nearly a dozen properties has thrown the future of many of Coney Island's businesses into disarray. While they've been guaranteed a spot somewhere in the plans, merchants aren't sure they'll take the offer.
Ruby's bar on the Boardwalk is in the direct path of Thor's wrecking ball, as are Coney's batting cages, miniature golf course and go-kart track.
"They claimed there is a place for us inside the mall," said Michael Sarrel, whose family owns the bar.
"If Ruby's is inside the mall, we're not doing half the business we are now," he said. "I don't expect we'll be here in 10 years."
Zigun, whose current landlord isn't renewing his lease, doesn't know what the future holds for his sword swallowers, one-armed jugglers and snake charmers because Thor hasn't responded to his bid.
Thor officials said they want to accommodate Zigun but that the 1122 Surf Ave. bank building, directly across from Coney Island USA's current location, might not be the right place.
"There are a series of buildings along Surf Ave. that may not be best depending on the development," said Thor spokesman Lee Silberstein.
Zigun said he has scouted the area for a new location and that the bank is the only suitable place for the sideshow and museum.
Zigun also has plans - not as big as Thor's - if he's allowed to rent the bank. He wants to re-create a slice of Dreamland, the over-the-top Coney Island amusement park that burned to the ground in May 1911.
"We'd re-create the mother of all sideshows, the Dreamland Circus Sideshow," Zigun said. "It would be fantastic - how could they not like it?"
And since the judge says I’m no longer allowed to scream at people in the street, I'll share it here with you.
I'm afraid for humanity. I’m afraid of humanity. We seem to be welcoming, with open arms, a blissful stupidity. We grind our engorged glands on any idea, product or available body that won’t upset our bliss. Passion without consequence. Death without the mess of organ failure or having our fluids drained and replaced with coca cola. Which I have been assured will improve my sex appeal, or at the very least get me laid. And if it doesn’t, well, there are prescription for that. But that’s not really my anger. My anger, what really reaches down in me and grabs my hate by the balls for a good squeeze, is that we seem to be taking pride in forgetting how to look. I don’t mean see. I wouldn’t ask that much of the radiated primates I look at every day. But they don’t even look.
“And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire.”
Men and women of faith are a towering sight. A beauty of passion to behold. But tell me you can stand in the face of an examined life and dedicate yourself to THAT. Children want to be firemen and dancers and doctors and lawyers and hitmen, but who dreams of becoming an ostrich when they grow up. I was six when I learned that sticking your head in the sand gets you kicked in the ass. Is it possible that we have all completely forgotten Saturday morning wisdom. Don’t strap a ballistic missile to your back in the hopes of getting ahead, and sticking your head in the ground gets you kicked in the ass. Simple wisdom for simple minds. But someday, eventually, we are suppose to grow up. Someday we are supposed to get more complex. Not all of us. I don’t expect us all to stand erect and recite Foucault, but shouldn’t there be at least a nod in that directipon? Am I so completely fucking wrong to expect when I run screaming down the street naked and raging about the invisible kings and queens pulling our little strings, a resonance with just a few more people. Are we really content to be handed our lives gift-wrapped. I’m not asking us all to lather up in patchouli, reject leather and personal hygiene in order to protest the cause du jour, but can we really make it from start to finish without actually bothering to look out the windows in our heads and gasp. It’s too hard, too strange, too foreign, no fun, too much god-damn effort. Are we really so weary that we can’t even be fucked to make the effort any more. And if so, how did we get here. Where did we choose the fork that said, “Fuck it. As long as it isn’t too much work.” When did we vote? Was I asleep? Why didn’t any one wake me? I could’ve been a swing vote.
And the worst part of it all, the absolute fucking limit, is that I’m preaching to the god damn quire. I’m suited up in my holy vestments, my erection in one hand and a camera in the other, drunk on tequila and spewing my confusion and disappointment and rage and sadness; and the only people listening, the only ones who will set foot onto my holy ground, are the devout. I have no missionaries to spread my seed. I can make my art, and shout my toasts, round after drunken round, and the only people who will ever hear me are the ones who already share my opinions. I make art for artists and critics, and people who like artists, and sleep with critics, and nothing ever changes. And shame on you for sleeping with critics. There is a danger of them reproducing.
I learned it all in art school. The only people show up, are the people who go see art. And if you stand in the streets and fling your art at people like a monkey with his feces, all they see is some lazy, liberal, Commie but they never LOOK. They don’t actually see. They’re watching the movie behind their eyes, taking short breaks for paid ad time, like brief drug trips. We don’t need the confusion or the discomfort of seeing, and looking is one too many steps on the path of actually having consider. And consideration is all together too close to change. And besides, if we did that, the economy would collapse.
City bank boom has boros green with envy
==
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/local/story/375895p-319419c.html
BY JONATHAN SARUK
DAILY NEWS WRITER
Banks are booming in Manhattan, leaving the city's other boroughs to demand: "Show us the money."
That's according to Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-Brooklyn, Queens), who says the disparity in where new bank branches open is stifling economic growth in lower-income communities.
"Over the course of the last five years there has been an explosion in the number of new banks that have come to New York City," Weiner said at a midtown news conference yesterday.
"At the same time that we've had this explosion of banking services, it's basically been in one community."
Manhattan, which has a median income of $47,030, has seen the vast majority of new bank branches, with 185 opening since 2000.
Meanwhile, only 15 new bank branches opened in the Bronx, where the median income is $27,611. Brooklyn and Queens also lag behind, with 37 and 49 openings, respectively.
Weiner called on banks to voluntarily reverse the trend - but he also plans to introduce legislation in Congress giving the Community Reinvestment Act more teeth to ensure banks serve poor areas.
Under his proposal, banks giving short shrift to low-income areas would be barred from opening branches in wealthier neighborhoods until they comply.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Banks are ducking poor areas
===
http://www.menafn.com/qn_news_story.asp?StoryId=Cq6y:ueiemZa4nejHBMTZyxjLzhvJA2LUzW

NY Post - 12/19/05

More than 200 banks opened in New York City in the last five years - but only three are in poor neighborhoods, according to a study released yesterday.

The 20 wealthiest neighborhoods have seen 55 more banks since 2000, while the 20 poorest neighborhoods have only gotten three new banks, said Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-Brooklyn & Queens). "Poor neighborhoods in this city are being squeezed out of the benefit a local bank can provide," Weiner said.

In the last year, in neighborhoods where the median income was over $30,000, there were 184 more banks. In neighborhoods where the median income was under $30,000, there were just 28 new banks.
In Brownsville, Brooklyn, which has a median income of just over $20,000, there are only two banks, Weiner said. Stephanie Gaskell

Brooklyn Musician and Songwriter Earns Two GRAMMY Nominations for 48th Annual GRAMMY Awards in Gospel Music Genre
=================================

http://www.prweb.com/releases/2005/12/prweb323149.htm

Joeworn "JSWIRV" Martin President of JSWIRV Entertainment and Minister of Music for The Love Fellowship Tabernacle in Brooklyn, New York is no longer a local celeberity under the industry radar. His song "Lift Him Up" performed by Hezekiah Walker and LFCC has earned him a place in GRAMMY history among noted gospel superstars.

Brooklyn, NY (PRWEB) December 17, 2005 -- Brooklyn songwriter and producer Joeworn “JSWIRV” Martin earned two GRAMMY nominations for his song “Lift Him Up” for the 48th Annual GRAMMY Awards. “Lift Him Up” has been nominated in the categories of “Best Gospel Song” and “Best Gospel Performance”.

"Lift Him Up" is competing against songs by gospel music powerhouses Yolanda Adams, Kirk Franklin, CeCe Winans, and Donnie McClurkin in the category of "Best Gospel Performance".

"Best Gospel Song" is a new category for the 48th GRAMMY Awards and features nominees Joeworn Martin for "Lift Him Up" (performed by Hezekiah Walker & Love Fellowship Choir) Israel Houghton & Aaron Lindsey for "Again I say rejoice" (performed by Israel and New Breed), Yolanda Adams, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis & James Q. Wright for "Be Blessed" (performed by Yolanda Adams), Erica, Joi, Trecina and Warryn Campbell for "Heaven" (performed by Mary Mary) and James Moss for "We must Pray" (performed by J. Moss).

“Lift Him Up”, the lead song and “Hold Out” also written by Martin on Hezekiah Walker’s 20th anniversary album 20/85: The Experience (Verity 2005) has fueled a GRAMMY nomination for Walker and LFCC in the category of “Best Gospel Choir or Chorus Album.”

When asked by his friends, family and the media ”Are you excited about the nominations?” Martin humbly speaks “It’s the favor of God for me to receive recognition from the industry for my work, especailly in the new category of "Best Gospel Song". It's a highlight moment in my life for sure."

“Lift Him Up” has received an overwhelming response from mainstream radio play and has landed a slot in the morning rotation on 98.7 KISS F.M., New York’s noted radio station for Old School and R&B music. In addition to mainstream radio play “Lift Him Up” is one of the top downloaded gospel songs on Itunes.

Although he's been under the radar Martin is no stranger to the GRAMMY accolades. In 1999 under his musical direction The Love Fellowship Tabernacle Choir received “Best New Group” nomination for the project “Hezekiah Walker presents The Love Fellowship Tabernacle”(Verity 1999).

In 2004 Martin and the Love Fellowship Mass Choir would defy the myths of the sophomore slump and walk away with a GRAMMY in the category of “Best Gospel Choir” for the album “Love is Live at Love Fellowship” (Verity 2003), again under Martin’s musical direction.

A talented producer and songwriter Joeworn “JSWIRV” Martin has also written for Pastor Timothy Wright, New Direction, JJ Hairston and Youthful Praise among others in the genre of gospel. He is the founding Minister of Music for the Love Fellowhship Tabernacle under the pastorialship of Pastor Hezekiah Walker.

The 48th Annual GRAMMY Awards will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2006, at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles and once again will be broadcast live in high-definition TV and 5.1 surround sound on CBS from 8 – 11:30 p.m. (ET/PT).

Belly Dance & Live Music in Williamsburg - No cover!

There's a new night that just started up in Williamsburg featuring live Mid-Eastern flavor music with tribal and cabaret belly dancers.
Every Wednesday from 8pm until late at My Moon - 184 North 10th Street between Bedford and Driggs.
They're doing a free belly dance class at 8pm and the live music by Djinn starts at 8:45. I went last week and there's a lot of open dance floor time. This link should work to Carmine from Djinn's website http://www.carmine.com/events/showevent.asp?EventID=3

Tribal belly dance is really new on the east coast and this is the first night to feature it on an ongoing basis. Being that I'm a tribal dancer I'm pretty psyched.

Raq on,
Mimi

hey there,

I've just arrived in New York, working my way into the Ganas (www.ganas.org) intentional community on Staten Island. Unfortunately, there is no room at Ganas for another week or so.

So, in the meantime, I need a place to crash. A few days would help. I'm a great cook (can make you meals, will bake you bread and tasty pastries - yum!). I'll even clean your house and do whatever other miscellaneous chores you want. References available upon request.

anxiously awaiting your reply,

I äm in Germany at the moment, and will be over seas till the end of the year. Sure, it's wonderful here, but I have been missing the city a bit recently.

How was the Atlantic Antic go? Also I just got word that my bodega guy was involved in a murder/suicide! And I wonder if the place will be closing down. Any one live near the corner of state and 3rd ave, and could give me an update? I would hate to see that place go, it's been there since I was a little girl. But I suppose if there's no Jorge, then there will be no more Jorge's Store.

Hope fall is beautiful in Brooklyn.
Ms. Chideya made such an impression on I when I read her "Dont Believe the Hype" a book that exposes the Welfare Myths about Black People in this country. I promise if you read this book you will see just how "brainwashed" even the most Afrocentric pan African in this country truly is. All of her books are eye opening and I encourage readers to read them if you havent allready! read: Farai Chideya -mash down cultural sterotypes

My friend is losing her mind and thinking of moving to some god awful neighborhood like *manhattan*. I told her she needs to move to Park Slope and she said...

" find me a fucking apartment in park slope and maybe i will!"

If you have any leads on a fucking apartment (studio or 1br) in Park Slope for $1300 or less, let me know.

So I'm walking down the street a few evenings ago, through the Fulton Mall. (For those of you who don't know, It's an outdoor strip mall below the Court house in downtown Brooklyn)

It was around 8pm so things were winding down, walking home, listening to my headphones not paying anyone any mind. When a girl walking down the street instead of moving a little to the side, or giving me the chance to do the same, extends her arm and pushes me as hard as she can, nearly knocking me over. She continued down the street as if nothing had happened.

Sure I have some smaller town roots, but all the same I'm baffled by this lack of respect for the earth and fellow man, and the kind I witness day after day. Throwing your McDonalds cup on the ground when there's a garbage can three feet away, threatening to sue me because my dog marked your garbage bag, bringing race into an argument when someone asks you to be a little quieter at the movie theater.

I'm left shaking my head thinking, "ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS?!?!"

I was not about to sink to her level and start a fight, but what do YOU guys do in these types of situations? I just get a little sad, I find small minds are hard to get through to.

Or is that a little weird? I want a pet. I'm more of a dog guy. But I live in a small apartment and it's a bit more responsibility with all the walkin' and all.

I saw a friggin' raccoon walkin' around Park Slope on 10th street and 8th ave. He was cute and he ran up a tree. That's amazing. I'm pretty awesome sometimes.

I'm writing this message from Switzerland. Yesterday, while in a Geneva department store, the woman ahead of me was buying an edition of the French series "Le Guide du Routard" ("the backapacker's guide). It was for New York but in the upper left hand corner of the cover it said, "PLUS Brooklyn."
