May Rain

In Puerto Rico they have a saying that the first rain in May is a good luck rain and that if you bath yourself it, all the bad vibes/evil eye will go away and luck with start to come. I remember when I was a little girl living on the island people would get out big buckets to collect the May rain for spells or cleanings. Now I have asked my mother where does this come from and she does not know. She told me that’s what her parents use to tell her to do. Has anyone here heard of this? And where does it come from?

Is it May rain that you collect. Rain water is good for alot of thing. But the first rain in May is the most important one of all. So make sure you have the bucket out and run in that rain.

I have heard of this too. As to where it comes from I don't know. Some may say it is of European origin and connected with May Day and the Goddess that rules that month. I have heard that you can doom your marriage by getting married in May. There is also the English custom of girls washing their faces with May Day dew to increase and maintain their beauty.

I have seen May Rain mainly as a love spell item. I think it is mentioned in the Hyatt Hoodoo material. I believe Baba Raul includes it in a champa recipe in 'The Book on Palo'.

    Maloongo Yaya ,

May rain is very good to put in mambas. But it is not collected just in may . There are a few days before the month which are considered the same as May rain but is actually April rain water/ May rain. In ancient time a witchdoctor none as Nganga would utilze the water for good luck and blessings of Nsambia a npungo. If you are not talking Congo then rain water for instance in Ocha means bad luck if it touches your head.
