Hi, I have recently been practicing dancing with my fire palms and it is going really well. The only thing is that there seems to be quite a lot of black smoke around the flames? I was wanting to know if this was normal or whether is has something to do with the type of fuel I'm using (parafin) and if it is are there any fuels that would cause less black smoke? I realise that this is probably a stupid question, but I don't have much experience of dancing with fire, so any advice would be really welcome. Thanks.

Re: Palm dancing and black smoke!?!
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 12:29 PMLamp oil causes a lot of smoke. White gas has less, but does not burn as long... you can mix the two for a little less smoke.

Tue, April 22, 2008 - 1:44 PMlighter fluid is a nice in-between of lamp oil or parrafin and white gas or Coleman fuel. another thing to think about is if your parrafin is "ultra-pure" or just "pure". It makes a difference. Also, make sure your wick is trimmed and that you have enough fuel for the length of your performance.

Re: Palm dancing and black smoke!?!
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 4:15 PMIn the group I'm involved with we all use 50/50 of lamp oil and Coleman. I personally prefer the ultra-pure lamp oil. It tends to burn much cleaner. The nice thing with the 50/50 is the reduction of smoke, but it burns longer than the Coleman does alone. It's worked out well for us so far. I haven't had a problem with the smoke yet. Of course, with the amount of flame I'm used to getting with my stuff, it's not surprising in the least! -

Wed, April 23, 2008 - 8:09 AMI've found that 50/50 indoors is still a bit too smokey... Outside it really doesn't matter, but when you are under stage lights it all shows. -

Re: Palm dancing and black smoke!?!
Sat, April 26, 2008 - 6:03 PMGood to know. I've never worked indoors with fire. When I have been indoors it hasn't been with stage lights, so maybe that will make a difference there too. It's something to keep in mind though. I'd rather get the info here than find out at a performance!
