Members of Empyrean Fire Tribe will be teaching at the 3rd Coast Tribal festival in Fort Worth - and yes there will be fire in the show too.

some of the the classes....

Fan Performance with Beverly (2 hours) - The goal of this class is to take your performance to a new level by the addition of fire fans. You will learn to move with the fans as an extension of your body and create stunning visual images. Other than Fire Safety this class will cover: Attitudinal Posturing, Combinations, Isolations, Turns & Transitions which can be used with the gorgeous feather and silk fans. Feel free to use any set of fans in class. Knowledge of basic fire or dance performance is helpful. All levels welcome. Bring your inner Fire Diva and be ready to let her out!

Poi for Belly Dancers with Lorelei (2 hours) - Back by popular demand! Learn the basics of poi spinning and how to integrate this beautiful prop into your dance. Lorelei will teach the tricks and transitions that translate to dance most readily. Your new poi skills will allow you to perform with veil poi, flags, fire, or LEDs. All levels welcome!

A Juggling Workshop with Sketch (2 hours) - Everyone can juggle. They just don't know it yet. The most basic juggling pattern, the Cascade, is easy to learn. The rest is just practice. Juggling is a great skill that will entertain you and yours tremendously. It is also a great meditation. So come on. Pull out some balls and play with them. It's a whole lot of fun by yourself or in a group. Even better, find a partner and do it together! This workshop will cover the basics of juggling in a relaxed, move-at-your-own-pace environment. Experience the thrill of juggling! It's simpler than you think!

Hoop Dance with Lorelei & Sketch (2 hours) - Put your belly dance superpowers to good use! Hula hoop is all about core control. In this class you will learn to hoop on every part of your body, from the tips of your fingers to your thighs & back up again. Learn dazzling off body tricks as well as how to flow with the hoop, creating a fluid and spiraling presentation! This will be a dynamic and intense class. Be prepared to sweat. This ain't your mama's hula hoop!

Cirque du Yoga - Partner Yoga for Dancers (2 hours) - Ever seen Cirque du Soleil and thought, I want to try that? Partner yoga combines the acrobatic grace of Cirque du Soleil with the flowing power of yoga to create a dynamic workout that will expand your physical vocabulary as well as your mind. With an emphasis on traditional yoga postures, we will blend isolated dance movements while using partners to support the body in gentle back openers and inversions for a deep, subtle, and thorough exploration of both. Our emphasis will be on proper alignment, expression, and improvisation as we create a playful and supportive environment increasing trust, strength, and flexibility.

more info here http://www.3rdcoasttribal.us/instructors.html OH and ...pssst... there is a package deal for all 5 of these classes (10 hours) for $130... an absolute bargain! http://3rdcoast2009.eventbrite.com/

oh and if you are interested in performing....
Empyrean Fire Tribe will be presenting a fire show during one of the shows. They are open to have a few of the 3C students join them during this segment. All aspects of the fire portion of show will be under Lorelei’s control. Let us know if you want to participate!

Hi, I have recently been practicing dancing with my fire palms and it is going really well. The only thing is that there seems to be quite a lot of black smoke around the flames? I was wanting to know if this was normal or whether is has something to do with the type of fuel I'm using (parafin) and if it is are there any fuels that would cause less black smoke? I realise that this is probably a stupid question, but I don't have much experience of dancing with fire, so any advice would be really welcome. Thanks.

Like many potent things, we are often simultaneously attracted to and fearful of fire, and for good reason. For many fire is associated with the erotic, the sensual, the sexual; it is aesthetically enchanting, mesmerizing in its dynamic beauty. But fire is also dangerous, and potentially destructive. To play with it is to dance with one of the most powerful, focus-and-respect-demanding partners imaginable. Contact fireplay is one way of dancing with fire. It is perhaps the most intimate, allowing the flames to caress you, allowing you to "hold" the flame. Contact fireplay can intensify sensually intimate partnered experiences, ritual performances, dance and other types of dramatic performances. Ensuring the safety and pleasure of all participants is at the heart of learning contact fireplay.

Wanna really heat things up? The space has sauna, if you are interested in blissing out in the sauna before or after the workshop, let me know.

Also, there is a kitchen at the space and the woman who runs the space can have a meal prepared and waiting for us when we are done. Again let me know if you are interested!

Town Hall Meeting: A Call to Arms for all Los Angeles Based Fire Artists!!!

Where: Smash Labs, 1714 Albion St, Los Angeles , CA 90031 323-227-6274

When: Wednesday, December 12, 2007. Doors open at 7pm, Meeting begins at 8pm

Who: All members of the Los Angeles Based Fire Arts Community

Why: During recent interactions with Los Angeles County and State Fire Marshals, we have learned that they are in the process of designing a set of safety standards and guidelines in an effort to standardize safety requirements within our industry. These safety guidelinesare to be implemented in the first quarter of 2008. We have the great fortune thatour local county Fire Marshals have offered to allow us participate in the design of these standards. Organizations such as the Safety Advisory for Fire and FXin Entertainment (SAFFE) and members of the Pyrotechnics community have offered to provide guidance or advice in the different methods of organizing our-selves and interfacing with regulatory and enforcement entities such as the FireDepartment.

This Wednesday night, a Town Hall Meeting has been called to inform the community and discuss the formation an organization comprised of members representing the interests of the Los Angeles fire community. It is time for us all to come together, as a community, to openly create our ownguidelines that address issues, such as safety, performance standards, etc. It is of the utmost importance that we collectively decide this before it is decidedfor us! In Addition, there is a new e-mail discussion list for fire artists and people who are interested in fire performance in the Los Angeles area.

This list can be joinedby following this link: www.curiousjosh.com/lafire

Please join! This list is an opportunity for us to stay in touch as a community, and discuss a number of pressing issues that are affecting the Los Angeles fire community such as the upcoming implementation of safety regulations, standards, and restrictions governing our industry. The LA Fire mailing list will be a great place to: discuss issues affecting the fire community, share fire related tips and techniques, and communicate about fire events in the LA area.

Please spread the word by continuing to forward this to fire performers who arein Los Angeles, or who visit Los Angeles and perform with fire. If we fail in this initiative, then viewpoints such as "Poi is the most dangerous tool in yourarsenal" or the potential banning of poi spinning in the direction of the audience may become a reality.

Troupes & Tool Manufacturers that have involvement in this initiative include: CuriousJosh, Fire by Trick Concepts, Fire Drums, Fire Groove, Los Angeles Fire Effects (LAFX), Machina Candeo, Mutaytor, Phoenix Projekt, Pyrophernalia, Sirena Serpentina, & Volcano Flux.

Directions:
SmashLabs1714 Albion Street (entrance is here - big red door with cut metal numbers, push down on the lever to enter). The "back" door is a big roll door in the last parking lot on the North side of Main just before the train tracks - look for the La Mano Press sign. If it's full,
there is an empty lot directly across the streeton the South side of Main Street , or feel free to park on Main or Albion and comein the front. The main thing to remember is if you've gone over the tracks, you've passed Albion which is a TINY street and easy to miss.

Phone: 323-22S-MASH (323-227-6274) is the office phone if you get lost.

Hope to see you there!!!

OK. I was curious as to what you all have successfully pulled off when it came to layering Bellydance and poi. It requires so much cordination; it is nearly imposible, well for me at least. I have found a few combos that are pretty doable. Hip figure Eights are pretty managable with just about anythng, as are hip shimmys. I also just love the ever-so-popular backbend while doing the weave. Chest pops, circles, slides, ect with behind the back spinning looks pretty cool. These are just some pretty easy things I can actually do, which leaves alot of just bellydancing or just spinning in between. I would just love it if you all would share some other layering ideas. Thank you so much.
I've noticed that a lot of poi spinners and fire dancers seem to have had some type of "circus" training, or tumbling/gymnastics. I'm wondering what (at 37 years old) I could add to my training to help me in performance. I'm not dancing with fire yet -- just dancing at this point -- but I'd like to.

I'm traveling Continental Airlines if that means anything in particular to anyone.
I also heared of "washing" wicks which I'm kind of curious about. I'm actually a little more concerned with getting the props back into the US than getting them out there, and if there was a way for me to "wash" the wicks that would help.

I've tried balancing it on my hip bringing my leg up and basically turning with the other foot in a circle (its a slow process) but it looks nifty.
This may be a stupid question, but the last time I used my palm torches, it was outside with lamp oil, I believe they were put out when most of the fuel had burned off (the song was over) If i used the alcohol and there is a trace of oil still on the wicks, would that be dangerous? My inclination is that it wouldn't be because the amount would be such a trace (if any)
There is a blurb below about it. \

This ground beaking Dvd will not be offered on our web site until after we return from .spirit of the tribes .. Maja and everyone at spirit of the tribes .. have treated us so much like family over the years we only feel it right to offer it at this event 1st before its internet release. A bonus as well because Maja and spirit of the tribes .. took in this pyro allowing me to vend for the 1st time at a belly dance show We are offering the video to attendees of spirit of the tribes .. $5 less than what it will be on the internet.

I look forward to seeing everyone in a few weeks !!!!

The Art Of Fire
Fire Belly Dance 101

This ground-breaking video, the first of its kind, is a fantastic introduction to fire belly dance, and gives you everything you need to know to begin dancing with fire! Designed both for the belly dancer who wants to add fire to her repertoire, and for the fire dancer who wants to add belly dance into her act. The video covers three sections; Fire Safety, Instruction, and a knock-out Performance at the end featuring a Fire Belly Dance Duet!

Fire Safety
The most important and crucial aspect of dancing with fire is fire safety. Randy 'Riz' takes you through the ins and outs of each fire belly dance prop, so that you feel comfortable working with the parameters required by each. After watching this section, take every piece of safety to heart and then be confident that you can work with your fire props and fire in a safe manner.

Instruction
This section introduces you to four fire props; Palms, Belt, Scimitar, and Fans. With each prop, Johanna 'Xenobia' gives an introduction with fire safety and performance tips, then takes you through a short basic combination that layers fire dance with basic belly dance moves. Live drumming by Loud Zoo is her rhythmic backdrop and meter for each combination. At the end of each combination, you'll see how actually lighting the prop on fire adds a whole new powerful dimension to the combination!

Performance
Now we take you away from the classroom setting, into the magical world of the fire performer... Karen SunRay joins Johanna 'Xenobia' in a fiery sunset duet set at the beautiful waterfront at Sacred Lands. Improvisation blends with choreography as the two professional fire belly dancers incorporate some of the basic moves taught in the video with more advanced techniques - inspired by the ambiance and their creative interaction! Layered with drumming by Giving Tree Drums, this performance is HOT HOT HOT and is designed to inspire you to take your fire belly dance to the next level!

Shortly after Yule, this will doubtless lead to a wildfire in my brain, leading to all sorts of costuming ideas. I love the big skirts I use in bellydance, but the poi catch on them when I spin...not a good idea for fire!!! Any ideas are appreciated!

Candles will not really work for this song. Has anyone out there come up with a viable alternative to using open flame where it isn't allowed?

Hello All,
The fall WildFire retreat is less then four weeks away. If you are currently or aspiring to be involved with the dance, drum or fire performing arts then don’t miss this incredible opportunity to learn and grow at the largest north east gathering built just for you. The spring WildFire retreat had over 100 artists attend and taught more then 30 classes in a verity of disciplines. This fall we have expanded added more class types and will be offering public transportation access (check out the website for details). We are also opening an indoor area for performing arts equipment vendors to come and show their wares. This is a great opportunity to see, hold, and play with different toys made by different folks. If you are a vendor of performing arts toys and want to participate in this way, please email chad@freedomthrufire.com (no charge to setup, you just have to be open to educating everyone on your stuff).

Summary Info
Sept 11th – 17th
Public Transportation is available
Located at a picturesque Southern CT river front location with hot showers and full bathrooms - directions on website
Car camping type venue – with many pre-built tents and bunk beds if you want them (first reserve, first get)
There are no public audiences at WildFire just performing artist
Classes are taught all four days, with spontaneous sharing happening constantly
Website - www.freedomthrufire.com

Tickets are limited to 150 and ticket prices go up on Sept 1st ($75 now $100 after the 1st). Many people have commented that this is the cheapest and best way they could spend a three day weekend (they really say that – ask them). All food is included in your ticket price and it is good food.

Best wishes to you no matter the route your path takes you on. If these performing arts are a part of your path, then I really hope to see and share with you at WildFire. FYI - For those attending Burning Man, you can check out the WildFire Tribe site to find other north east performing artist that are attending BM and where we are having meet ups and stuff (http://tribes.tribe.net/wildfireretreat/).

Dance and fire is so elemental, such an integral part of our being, I often find myself transcending in thought and spirit, becoming one with the infinite. Of course, I connect with this space most naturally when I am alone, free from thoughts of self, of choreography, of music. But there have been many performances where I have reached this place as well. The journey has taken many shapes, depending on the energy of the gathering, of my sisters. Most recently, I was performing to a tribal drum beat when I felt lifted into a world of the past, elders circling me, uplifting me in knowing and understanding. My arms weaving light and knowledge, my feet stomping natural, rhythmic, giving back to the earth the life force I was receiving. The dance of light allows me to bring to life the gifts of our elders, to share in their wisdom, their passion for life and truth, and their knowledge of the infinite.

I would love to hear if/what other folks envision while they are dancing, performing, breathing. Share your visions!!!

so.. i haven't been doing belly dancing for so long, yet, but i HAVE been checking the net for tribal belly dance, and found for example this place.. i am more fascinated by tribal than 'original' belly dance or whatever you'd like to call it.. the one bad thing is that i'm not sure there even IS a teacher in tribal belly dance in sweden, which sucks...

i am, however, not sure that the kind of tribal that you do in the states, is exactly what i wish to do either.. it's WAY more like it, but for some reason, i have this very strong feeling that i'd like to something that is even closer to me..

and so i came up with the idea that i'm most definitely sure i'd like to try out at some point when i overall feel more comfortable with my dance, and have learnt some more...

picture this before you:

in the blue light that comes with nightfall, see the rocks and the many fires in different sizes between them.. hear the thumping sounds of swedish, ancient rythms made by drums and didgeridoos.. three women doing some kind of 'nordic tribe belly dance', dressed in lots of leathers, creating a picture of ancient, swedish rituals done in the nights, to either create magic or worship different gods/godesses...

i have a very clear picture of this in my head, but i cannot really get it out properly.. i see 4 men with drums and other instruments, then 3 women dancing... i also see fire with the belly dance...

what do you think 'bout this? is it worth a go? and if so, what would you advice me to look for in the other two women?

i dunno - throw advice and opinions onto me =)

well.. that's that for now, me thinks...

i got some pics of my wand:la:hoop action.. where i balance the hoop on my head & use wands in my hands at the same time.. this routine allows me to do the more belly.dancing fusion in my fire dancing.. while balancing in the hoop i snake/isolate my arms, some shimmy-shimmy, and bendie back ..but not too far or the hoop falls off my head.. then i do arm pops & eat the fire while hooping.. yum..

i had share some of this with Leslie in an email awhile back ago.. and wanted to post some pics.. now that i have them..

Corss posted over to Domba, but since we have some activity here, I need some advice from the experts

I want to learn about fire as well; I did take a workshop on safety last year, and am thinking about getting some poi. Seriously thinking, as in I have almost placed my order twice today, but cannot decide where I should start.

The comet poi are pretty neat I think, to learn how to use poi, but are really only for learning I think:

But these seem like they would be better since they convert into fire poi:

Any advise from the experts??
