Hi all, just wanted to stop by and recommend Unifire Theatre's workshop on fire performance. This workshop will be conducted by Jesse (the Fire Ninja) and Moi (the embodiment). We have many years of experience in performing with fire and have been conducting workshops together for the last two years. You will leave with a vast list of resources, and knowledge from fire safety, performance tips, permits and how to get them, a brief history of the fire arts as well as instruction in the art of poi and staff. Yes, it is now a well lknown fact that the rivalry for the title of fire god between Jesse and Myself has gotten out of control but we promise not to get in a fist fight or fire battle to the death in the middle of the workshop. Perhaps toward the end though. Check out the video to see the latest installment in the bitter feud.
ABSfest is a Future of Tradition Production.
FoT has been a force in shaping and sustaining the arts in Western North Carolina since 1999. Founded as a Center for Folkarts, FoT for many years housed traditional and evolving visual, movement & music artists under one roof. Many long-standing groups in Asheville's nationally known artscene had roots there, particularly in the fire and circus arts, bellydance, African and Latin dance communities.
In 2006, FoT shifted primary focus to event production. The most comprehensive programs are Triboriginal: Tribal Dance, Music & Culture Camp and the Americana Burlesque & Sideshow Festival, with new projects in the works.
March 22 - the Asheville Bellydance Technique Smackdown with Zi'ah Ali
Hey folks,
Join us for some SouthEastern Bellydance Community-building fun, with
the Bellydance Technique Smackdown
with Zi'ah Ali of Awalim Dance Company (Atlanta, GA)
Saturday, March 22
Asheville, NC

So you think you can bellydance?
Join Zi'ah Ali, Director of award-winning TribalCon and Awalim Dance Company, for an intense day in the studio. Workshoppers make a verbal agreement at the beginning of class and then work to make it reality -
Flawless isolations? Beautiful zils? Intricate footwork? Yes? Yes. YES!

Committed to perpetuating bellydance in its pure, expressive and artistic form, Zi'ah will have us quivering with enthusiasm and exertion.
A great resource to take your dance practice to the next level.

The workshop will be followed by a delightful evening of performance and world music at the BoBo Gallery in Ultra-Hip downtown Asheville. After the show, DJ Pop n Lock Aleikum (aka August of The Mezmer Society) will be spinning insane and festive tunes for the fan of Indonesian HipHop and Eastern European swing.

The Workshop is at the Movement & Learning Center
90 Biltmore Ave, Asheville NC 28801
Registration at 10:30am.
Classes are 11am-1pm & 2-4pm
Bring finger cymbals, shoes, water, a notebook & layers. Kneepads & a yoga mat are optional.

the Hafla is 8-10pm, followed by the crazy World Music DJ.
$10 at the door
BoBo Gallery,
Lexington Avenue, Asheville, NC, 28801.
The BoBo has both a wine bar & wholesome food.

Register at www.barakamundi.com or Paypal onca@barakamundi.com.
Call 828 232 2980 with questions.

OH AND ----

On April 5, award-winning Zafira Dance Company will be teaching and performing over the hill in Knoxville. In the spirit of generating bellydance community, we have arranged a bulk rate. Folks pre-registering for both at once enjoy the amazing rate of $120.

Support Future of Tradition and Arts2People this weekend!
THIS WEEKEND - COME TO Parade Art Party
Hi Mahsati and friends!
Please join us for this 'float-raising', and forward this to your many artsy folks with an interest in LAAFF, the annual Burlesque & Sideshow Festival, or any of the other great community endeavors of these two orgainzations. Thanks! ~~

Invite details:
Future of Tradition Productions and Arts2People have joined forces for the Asheville Holiday Parade! To foster community support for the arts, we are constructing a float with a bellydance theme- a Magic Carpet Ride - and entering it in the float contest. We are excited for the opportunity to bring people together for a day of fun, food & art to make this dream a reality. The parade theme this year is 'creating community thru celebration' - let's start with a party!

We will have the first Art Party on Oct 28 - 12 - 7 PM, at Kitty's. We will be making banners, assembling & painting the magic carpet and making the giant tassels. No artistic talent required, just enthusiasm. Please bring something to eat or drink and your creativity! Kid and new mom-friendly. If you would like directions, contact Torva at Torvawench@gmail.com.
Thanks!
We also hope that many of the area's dancers will walk and dance with the float. Imagine - 20, 50, 100 dancers togther!
The vision is to transform the whole city's idea of us from a few koochy girls to a global movement with joy and integrity!!!!

a word of advice : always good to trod upon the still writhing bodies of your detracters whenever the oppurtunity presents itself, or even haphazardly on your lunch break.
its' ESPECIALLY good to do it on your way towards enlightenment in my holy name ( again, N-a-n-c-y ). no unfinished biz allowed in the blissful ether, ya know...

But it's VERY SUPER especially cool to trod upon the still writhing bodies of your detracters on your way to achieving enlightenment either haphazardly or on your lunch break from alll your hard work in my holy name because, once your enlightened, folks will say " he's soooo GREAT since he's been enlightened! he was such a malevolent force of cunning and deceit bathing in the quagmire of his own insatiable lust for power and dominion over all before.... NOW LOOK AT HIM ! ! " .
your sinful pre-enlightened mischief now forgiven and soon forgotten , you are free to continue your nefarious ways anew , beyond reproach , ripping defiled flesh and displacing the souls of the pure and rightious ( all of West Asheville , if you so desire ) at your whim and leisure .

take this wisdom and go now.... do what thou wilt is the whole of the law . there is no law beyond do what thou wilt ( except delaware , i think...)

"I just returned from Asheville's first Americana Burlesque and Sideshow Festival, where my friend and former belly dance teacher Princess Farhana (who studied traditional Raqs Sharki in Egypt) came all the way from Hollywood, and was featured along with many amazing North Carolina performers. Asheville group Baraka Mundi offered tribal-style group choreographies. A woman known only as the "Mystic Oracle" gave a stunningly graceful traditional show - all with a curved sword balanced on her head. Claire Dima did a techno-pagan piece dressed as a fairy. Then, after two old-Hollywood-style glamour numbers, Farhana stole the show with a final burlesque strip-tease as Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz while demonstrating the insane, Alien-like stomach undulations she is known for. The festival also featured numerous "circus arts," fire dancing and workshops. Info on next year's event will be posted at: www.side showburlesque.com, while Baraka Mundi offers a Tribal Dance, Music and Culture Camp this September in western N.C. (see www.tribori ginal.org for more info)."
