Dear Family,

Unfortunately, we won't be joining you for the holidays.

Andrea and I have decided that we will celebrate the holidays in the following way. Tell us what your favorite cause is and we'll donate $100 to it.

If you'd like to do the same for us, for whatever amount you are comfortable with, our cause is Forest Ethics. You may send us a holiday card with a check made out to Forest Ethics.

PLEASE DON'T MAIL US GIFTS.

We've decided to do this for a couple reasons. First, neither Andrea or I are Christian.

Second, it seems inappropriate to participate in the orgy of consumption associated with the holidays as the links between the consumer lifestyle and human and environmental devastation become abundantly clear. Rather than contribute to this societal self-destruction, we'd rather learn about the causes you care about and support them.
