      Thank you Skip!!

Do you find practicing in China difficult for a non-native? I will spend my last quarter of school practicing there and am a little nervous about it. I've heard there is a great deal more to learn by practicing there than practicing here. I would love to hear the positive things you can say about this!

      :)

You'll be with a group of students i suppose, and You will have a great time.

The chinese people will Love being around you as "Laowai" (foreigners) are quite novelty for them.

Plus you can needle very deeply; they expect that; as compared to the usa where you need to be very cautious with your clients.

In fact you may be shocked at how aggresive the chinese docs are with their needling technique. .. be bold !

Yes I will be with other students, in a Chinese Clinic - not sure which area I will choose to go to yet...

Thank you for your reply! It sounds awesome!!! I look forward to it though it is a bit off - but time sure flies when you're in school!

Do you have your own practice there?!

no thats next to impossible since i dont speak chinese.

Im here to learn more..its a lifetime of study IMO.

What we learn in the usa is good, but only the tip of the iceberg, actually.

Good luck studying, the time does go by quickly, ...so dont waste even a moment.

wow, if you don't speak chinese, do you have a translator?!

also, you mentioned the needling depths are deeper there, does that mean they needle to max of the recommended depth or deeper than that even?!

yes, the tip of the iceberg sounds right, i can't wait to go to China!

thank you for studying luck, it does pass quickly, however the stress is enormous!!!

    Hi,

I am a new student of Oriental Medicine at Emperor's College - I will begin this Fall.

I just moved to LA from Berkeley, where I was pursuing a PhD in the neurosciences when I had an early/mid-life crisis change of life kind of thing.

I am here now. Nervous/excited as hell. And am happy to hear from anyone with words of wisdom!

    Thank you,
    Anna

      Anna,

I'd like to hear what you think about Emperor's College. I've heard some amazing things from people who have gone there.

Acupuncture is a fantastic field - I'm glad to see you're choosing it. It's not easy, but then nothing worthwhile is. If you're still interested in getting a PhD, my school (ACTCM in SF) has a PhD program in Acupuncture - specialities are Pain Management or Gynecology.

My only advice thus far is to remember that the first quarter is the hardest, but might not be for you, as it's getting back into the swing of school and learning how to study properly. Don't "kill" yourself trying to get straight A's. I did that and burnt out as did all my fellow students. And don't be too hard on yourself if you forget everything you learned after each test - repetition is a big one in acupuncture school and you will have many years to learn it all. I found grasping the initial concept - TCM fundamentals to be very difficult and am still struggling with that. And of course, it's the most important as it's the basis for this medicine - the foundation of our pyramid.

Huge congrats on your decision! This medicine continues to blow my mind daily!!! I knew it was amazing and good for so many things, but I had no idea it could -- for example -- make my migraine so much less painful that for the first time in my life I took no medication, clear my UTI with 1 herbal dose, release my frozen shoulder and so much more. All of these illnesses I developed while in school as well since it takes a lot out of you - so be sure to take care of yourself. Lots and lots and lots of rest!! :)

I'm so happy that I've found this Tribe! I just found out a few days ago that I have been accepted into the Won Instittute for Graduate Studies Acupuncture program. I'm going to be moving from my home in Michigan to start classes in Glenside, PA (near Philly) which start at the end of August. I'm looking for all of the support I can get! Thanks for starting this :D

I felt the same way - it's a very good place to be. If I were to do it over again though there are a few things I would have done prior to starting school because once it begins it feels like you're on a treadmill you can't get off of and for me anyway, everything was put on hold and still hasn't been done a year a half later! Also, I would have spent tons more time with friends and going out and HAVING FUN before starting the program as well as organizing everything I could have. Oh well, I'm about to hit "second year" running :) In another year I'm promised my life back!!!! And although I would NEVER do it over again, it's awesome to hear your process because once the going gets tough it's easy to forget why we started this insanity in the first place!

Well, I'm going to be moving the first week of July. So I'm planning on spending as much time with my friends as I can before I leave the state. And I have a camping trip planned for two weeks a month before classes start. After I move, I want to spend a lot of time visiting local acupuncturists and getting to know the area. I'm a woman with a plan! And part of that plan definately includes long walks with my boyfriend and drinking beer while eating chicken bbq. I wonder what TCM says about that food combination?

            :D

Siobhan - GOOD, GOOD!!!!! You do sound like you've got it all covered!!!!

Re: beer, bbq chicken and TCM I won't say a word because I you should ENJOY yourself before starting school as your food habits will most likely change quite a bit after you begin. And on that note, I highly recommend eating LOTS of ice cream NOW!!! ;)
