Geez you guys! I picked ACTCM because they put you through so much hell that they have a very successful pass rate for the state and nationals. And now I know why!!! Today - 2nd year comps - almost kicked my ass!!! I have been studying for 3 months, again giving up most of what I called a "life" but people not in acupuncture school call "going to dinner with friends once a week". The testing started at 9am and was over at 3:30pm. We had 5 tests. We have 3 practicals at ACTCM. Herb ID - IDing 5 herbs and filling in all the info about them (but not knowing which 5 of the 350+ will be chosen), diagnosis and point location (10 points in 10 mins). They started this when those were part of the state and national exams but years ago they stopped being part of those exams and most schools stopped requiring them. Ours, however, still requires them and quite frankly, it's crazy!!!! CRAZY!!! And it's crazy making!!!! I have made myself sick with stress. Most people say that 2nd year comps at ACTCM is much harder and more stressful than the state exam and when they finally get to the state exam they think it's cake and I believe it. If anyone fails more than 2 of the written exams we cannot be in clinic for 6 months and have to take the exams over - putting us 6 months behind in school. If anyone fails any one exam twice they are kicked out of school for one year!!!! Personally I think this is all too much. And when I'm freaking out over school - which is a lot - I go on to the AIMC website and I fantasize about transferring. I have been doing this for 3 years. AIMC only has 5 tests for comps for the entire time! We have something like 17!!!! So here I am just blowing some steam, freaking out and wondering what other people at other schools have to say about their comprehensive exams?!?!?

Re: Comps or whatever your school calls them....
Sun, June 22, 2008 - 9:03 PMHey Conor -
Thank you!
Good luck with your upcoming exams!!! Yeah your exams sound as fun as mine were :) What school do you go to? 80% pass rate for the State or National exam or for the exams your about to take?
Our school, ACTCM, boasts the highest pass rates for the State Exam, the percentage changes yearly but I know we're at least 80%, though I think we might be higher. The pass rate for the comps I just took, after talking to those who got their results back would have to be lower than 80% Retakes are in 3 weeks but some people will get held back for a quarter, maybe more. Some friends of mine did not fare well and though I did much better than I thought I'd do I still have 2 retakes myself.
I have been sticking needles in people for over a year now and I feel like that is the easiest part. That part I know how to do. It's the jumping through flaming hoops (AKA test taking) that's got me all befuddled.
Anyway, my heart goes out to you and everyone else in these programs!!! -

Sat, July 5, 2008 - 4:54 AMYou have undergrad acupuncture school? That's interesting. In the states it's graduate level only. wow, no herbs - how much easier life would be :) but really I love them - all 300+ ;)

Re: Comps or whatever your school calls them....
Sat, July 5, 2008 - 3:11 PMMy first year comp is coming up next week. There are things that I love about my school, like the comps aren't designed to be really hard until 3rd year. After all, they want us to pass! And I'm also thankful that it's an acupuncture only program. I like herbs as much as the next girl, but I cant imagine trying to learn all of those formulas along with the everything else on my list of things I have to re-memorize by next friday. From what I understand, the theory behind the two modalities differ just enough to be confusing as hell.
I'm actually stressing far more about my phys final then I am about my comp. I enjoy my new phys instructor (a thousand times better then last 2 semesters) but her Chinese accent is so thick that I can barely understand what she's saying. I really really hope that I've been able to comprehend enough of her lecture to do well on her final. I've been studying three different textbooks to try to fill in the gaps, but the lecture part is essential to understand what she's going to test us on. -

Sat, July 5, 2008 - 5:29 PMGood luck on your comps and finals!!! What school do you go to Siobhan?!
Your first year comps don't sound too bad, though of course none of it is fun! At ACTCM they test us for 2 full days - that's right - 8 hours of testing X2. Actually day 2 is more like 5 or 6 hours for 2nd year comps but only 1 test, I think, for first year. We are tested in everything. First year was fundamentals, diagnosis, herbs, acupuncture, meridian theory and I'm sure there were more but I've forgotten. Day 2 is the practical exam. Where we locate 10 points on a model in 10 minutes. They now give us 12 minutes though :) 2nd year comps we are tested on Western Med, Acupuncture, Formulas, Internal Med and Case Studies - which are not multiple choice but fill in the blank. We have to put the diagnosis, points, formulas and herbs for 3 case studies. The practicals are diagnosis (tongue and pulse), herb ID (5 of 350+ herbs) and point location again. I've done a little research and our school seems to test the hardest from what I've found. People say by the time they get to the state exam it's a breeze. I can believe that.
Wow, learning only acupuncture and not herbs and formulas. I must say that's tempting but for chronic cases, as well as acute stuff like UTI's, I've seen herbs work miracles. I fought it at first but now I LOVE them.
You will do great on your tests!!! My heart goes out to you having to decipher a non-native speaker - that is how I spent my first year as well and had no idea what they were talking about anyway.
Rescue Remedy (Bach's Flower Remedies) - works wonders for test anxiety!!!
HUGS!!

Re: Comps or whatever your school calls them....
Sun, July 6, 2008 - 5:17 AMYeah, you're crazy :P but crazy in a way that I admire. I occasionally think about the herb issue. I know it's an important modality, and many people rely more on herbs using acupuncture to compliment to the course of treatment. But I also know how noncompliant the average American is. I've listened to a number of TCM practitioners gripe about patients not taking the herbs. My acupuncturist back home gave up using herbs all together because he couldn't get his patients to take them as directed. I've decided to wait until I've been in practice a bit. If I decide then that I need the knowledge I'll go back for it. Maybe by then my school will have their herb program up and running.
I go to The Won Institute for Graduate Studies, in PA. It's a very young school, the first acupuncture class is graduating in a few weeks. We're all holding our breaths to see how they do on the boards. The Won is a pretty cool place, even with all of the lumps and bumps everyone is experiencing. Most of my instructors are American and I think that all of our core instructors have between 10 and 30 years of practice under their belts. I cant help but smile that my theory instructors are all Americans and my western phys instructors have all been either Korean or Chinese. Unfortunately, I've known few Chinese or Korean people in my life so far, so I haven't had any practice in learning their accent. I'm much better with Mexican or Lebanese accents. Ah well, my ear is finally getting attuned now that the semester is over. I knew I was in trouble the first ten minutes of class. She was talking about harmony and the endocrine system. So I'm thinking, "Hmmm, harmony. Ok, the endocrine system makes sure the body maintains homeostasis. Everything has to be in harmony, right?" Then she started talking about syloid harmony. Syloid harmony?? My classmate and I looked at each other and I said, "Oh God, thyroid hormone". The class pretty much went downhill from there :) But she's a nice lady, is super smart, and has been more then accommodating to us.
My first year comp doesn't look bad at all, only 100 standard questions and several self reflective questions. OMT Research Methods (emperical vs evidence based, critical appraisal, stricta requirements etc.), OMT (5E, simple pattern differentiation, pulses etc), Clinic Observation (intake, pulses, referrals, treatment plans etc), Western Phys (including the cranial nerves - someday I really just have to sit down and memorize those suckers), Point Energetics & Location, Nutrition, Sitting & Moving Meditation (not a practical, thank God! just stuff like qi circulation, breathing, posture etc.) I think we're allotted 3 hours for the comp, then we have to go back to class. Our school (being sponsored and run by Koreans) didn't take into account that nobody would want to be in class on July 4th, so we negotiated the day off by giving up half of our lunch breaks and having class after our exam to make up the lost time. I'm just glad that our instructor decided not to have a final in her class, instead she gave us an extra case study to do. So I only have to do a presentation that day. I do think it's weird that we have finals and a comp exam. Why not just make the comp a bit bigger?
And I totally agree, Rescue Remedy Rocks!!
