Hi all -
I've moved from SF to Austin TX to attend the school here (AOMA.edu). It's been amazing so far.
Was wondering if anyone has any books they'd like to unload. Mainly:
Pocket Manual of Chinese Med by LEE
Chinese Acupuncture & Moxibustion (CAM) by Cheng
Or is there something else that's been really helpful to your studies besides the basics??
Thanks!
Agnes

Re: anyone have books for sale?
Sat, October 6, 2007 - 7:09 PMHi Agnes!! I'm a hoarder, I keep all the books I get even if I don't use them!!! Sorry!!! Redwing Book Company is a great place to get hard to find books.
I love Peter Deadman's "A Manual of Acupuncture" and his flash cards. There is also a pocket herbal formula book that I will post here as soon as I can find the name. I recently got and like "Acupuncture Imaging" but won't use it till after I graduate. For school, CAM (although it's most ppls least favorite) is important since that's what is used for the CA state and national exams. We also use ACT. I know ppl who recommend the old texts - Nei Jing, Nan Jing, Shang Han Lun ....
Personally - this is my take - I want to read everything but do I have the time? NO! So I focus on the books we are told to read for school and I try to read and re-read CAM as often as I can. After graduation and passing the exams I will definitely branch out - but now my brain is about to explode :)
Please keep us updated on your experience/s at AOMA. I am surprised to hear you left SF to go to school there! What made you choose AOMA over ACTCM?!

I hate that book sooo much, its not even useful for the nccaom they base that off deadman now, I'm not sure what the California exam goes by. -

Re: anyone have books for sale?
Wed, October 10, 2007 - 11:17 PMJason,
Thank you for this info! I agree that CAM sucks ass - I really do - however I was told that the CA state exam is based off of it as are tests at ACTCM - to the point that when I put a point location from Deadman on a test I was told I had re-learn the CAM location :(
Thank you though - as I have CAM next to my bed for reading and I agree that Deadman is so much better. I also really like the Deadman point flashcards. Do you like Deadman's other books?!
The pocket formula book is here: www.redwingbooks.com/product...rPre.cfm
However, the comprehensive acupuncture pocket book covers formulas in it already so I'm not sure the "only formulas" one is needed.... -

Re: anyone have books for sale?
Sun, November 11, 2007 - 6:17 AMThanks for the responses. I ended up getting CAM on amazon for $14. Worth having around for that. Have any of you used Tyme? He actually summarizes info from multiple sources - including deadman and CAM. One thing I don't like about deadman is he doesn't include nearby locations as referenced. Maybe it's too confusing - but I like knowing how close/far from LI pts are Lu points. It helps me visualize. But I think I’ll get the deadman cards – I’ve heard conflicting reviews – but each person is different. As far as choosing AOMA - I went to 8 different schools, 2 in the bay area, 4 in LA, 1 in ABQ and AOMA. I went to ACTCM twice and while I liked it the first time (first place I saw) after visiting other schools I knew it wasn't the place for me. I didn't get a sense of community nor did it seem that people were all that happy there. AIMC was my second choice but I also took cost of living into consideration. Being a full time student again means watching my money. I love AOMA - my classmates are dedicated, intelligent, involved and really everyone helps each other. Majority of us moved here to attend AOMA which I think gives us a certain amount of camaraderie. I also like that the classes are mainly during the day. I didn't want to do an evening program. The teachers are all chinese, with excellent english (no one complains) who write books, are especially active in the accreditation boards and want us to learn as much as possible. The program is rigorous as are most others, but I really appreciate that they make us take benchmark exams at the end of each year (it sucks, but makes u that much more on top of it before treating patients). Also - we're in the process of getting accredited by the organization which accredits large unis like UT here. We'll be able to transfer at least our western classes to other schools if desired. The administration is superb - truly supportive from course selection, financial aid seminars etc. And they do a major trip to china every other year for externships. For me it's ideal. I love it here and the sense of community - but of course it's so important to check out schools. Back to point locations... -

Re: anyone have books for sale?
Thu, December 20, 2007 - 10:57 AMYes CAM is pretty essential, even though it sux :)
I have not used Tyme but toward the back of Deadman I love the pics of areas that have all the points in each area "ie: arm" to reference where each point is in relation to the others.
I just purchased and really like the 2 internal medicine books: "Clinical Handbook of Internal Medicine" - there are 2 volumes and a 3rd is about to be released.
www.redwingbooks.com/product...tMed.cfm
www.redwingbooks.com/product...Med2.cfm
I have been at ACTCM for 2 1/2 years and although it's got its problems, like every school, I really enjoy my classmates and personally, to me, I feel a very strong sense of community. I am not as involved as students who have moved here from other locations because I have lived in SF for over 20 years so I already have an established group of friends I hang out with - but I have also made amazing friends at ACTCM who I will know forever.
I think it's awesome that you checked out so many schools before you decided on AOMA. I wanted to stay in the immediate SF area so I only went to the 3 that are here.
As for year end comps - I think all the schools require those but I'm not positive. I'm not looking forward to taking my 2nd year comps in 6 months!! -

Re: anyone have books for sale?
Wed, January 2, 2008 - 11:16 PMI'm looking to buy books by Royston Low if anyone has any. Also I'll sell my brand new Deadman's for $50 off Amazon price... -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: anyone have books for sale?
Sun, January 20, 2008 - 5:57 PMI hear the Royston Low 8 extra meridians is a great one and I would love to have that one too. That's a good deal for your deadman book, if no one here buys it and you'd like, I can inform my school's yahoo group as I'm sure someone there would snag it in an instant.
I also want to recommend this website for new and old acu titles: www.chinesemedicinetimes.com
