I just got a letter from ACTCM requesting that we look at the test scores for the CA board exam...and they do fare much better than AIMC.
Do you feel like they are more test driven?
As a teacher, I believe that teaching to the test is why American education sucks.
AIMC has more clinic hours, which I like because practice seems to actually create a greater knowledge source for me.
What do you guys think?

Re: test score disparity
Sun, January 28, 2007 - 1:55 PMMol,
I can answer only a little re: this topic - yes ACTCM is VERY PROUD of their testing scores on the state exam and yes it is true that graduates from ACTCM on average pass the state exam the first time and that AIMC's state exam scores recently went down. However - I spoke to a friend of mine who is a lawyer and graduated from a law school that had the lowest scores for passing the BAR and she passed on the first try. I spoke to her about my desire to transfer to AIMC and my worry re: this exact reason and she said that it's not the school as much as it is the student. Therefore, I feel these things are subjective. Part of the reason I chose ACTCM was because of their passing rate/scores. My friends who go to AIMC (who transferred from ACTCM) feel they are getting the same education (better in all the prereq classes) however AIMC is much less "driven". But it's also on the tri-quarter system so their quarters are longer and at the end of each quarter they are just as burnt out. The other thing to consider is that AIMC has 3 weeks vacation in between quarters whereas ACTCM has only 2 and I can attest - 2 is not enough!
ACTCM is DEFINITELY WITHOUT A DOUBT more test driven - incredibly so. There is a test a week for your first year in points if you are full time. I am 3/4 time and have had a test a week for a year and a half and it's killing me. It's a LOT of pressure!!!!!! AIMC is much much more laid back. AIMC does indeed have more clinic hours. I talked to one graduate who went to ACTCM for the first 2 years and then transferred to AIMC for his last year to get more clinic hours and he loved it.
Hope this was somewhat helpful - time for the AIMC students to answer now!! :)

Re: test score disparity
Wed, May 9, 2007 - 9:38 PMI go to AIMC and I am copying and pasting this from our school newsletter:
Licensing Exam Pass Rates
Contrary to the implications of information posted on the CAB web site, we
are quite pleased with the AIMC Berkeley¹s results for the CALE (CA
Acupuncture Licensing Exam). 5 of 6 first time takers (83%) passed the exam
this last time, and 5 of 6 (83%) passed it last year.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The exam results posted do not distinguish first-time test takers and the students re-taking the test. The AIMC passing rates looks low because the people who re-take the exams took it multiple times and couldn't pass it. One main reason is language barrier. For example, the CA board lets you take the exam in English, Chinese, Korean. Given our school's connection with Japanese acu. community, there are a few students who came here from Japan and struggled with taking the exam in English, but taking it in Japanese is not option...
Also,
The school's curriculum was revamped about 3 years ago and it is just getting better and better. The first group of students under the new curriculum hasn't even graduated yet.
Anyway, I will post my impressions in greater details about AIMC in the other ACTCM vs AIMC thread.
Donna
P.S. We don't always get 3-week vacation between every tri-mesters. Between Winter and Summer trimester, the break is only 2 weeks. And we don't get days-off on all the holidays either.
