organize this! Last year, the food was fabulous--- great carnivorous
and veggie-friendly stuff alike. Mark and I are definitely going to be
there. Rumor has it that Mark (aka Baris) might be presenting a class
on The Decadent Art of the Hookah!

Complete details aren't posted yet, but feel free to contact Saahira:
June 28, 2008 Oxford Farm Charlottesville VA (directions to come)
hosted by MJZ and Isenfir of the SCA
If you would like to vend/teach/help please contact Saahira via her
tribe page
http://people.tribe.net/saahira-nashita
Middle Eastern food, lessons, vending, garb workshops and an evening
hafla!
more info to come shortly...

From Saahira on Tribe.net:

I've got the date set for June 28th for this event! Yay!

For those who don't remember, it is an event designed to bring the SCA
folks together with the local ME dance community. To showcase the
local teachers and what they offer, to talk about dance within SCA
context, and have some great classes to try out new styles and ideas.
This will be the 3rd year, and should be really fun! Last years was
wonderful! We had so many great teachers, great classes, great food,
and great turnout from the community. People came from Richmond,
Fredricksburg, Roanoke, Newport News, and from all around the local
area! I'm hoping to bring back some of the teachers from last year and
am looking for some more new faces this year!

If you have a class or topic you would like to teach, if you know of
someone who may wish to vend, or you would like to help in general,
please let me know!

We are going to do a gate fee this year and will be looking for
volunteers to help with this and other general setup/event details.
I'm not going to do a "feast" this year, but would like to have food
included in the price, perhaps like we had for lunch... ( i'll be
begging a certain couple to help me with this, because they are so
awesome and they did such a great job last year AND stayed within
budget)...

Also this year, I'd like to do a couple of round table discussions or
panels on various topics that people would like to know more about.
For instance, I didn't get to complete the "Bellydance Mythbusters"
discussion last year, but we'll do it this year! I believe a class on
camping with the shire encampment was mentioned as well.

Anyway, save the date!!! I hope to see lots of smiling Isenfiri faces!

Out of the "Clubs and Organizations" we are in a *very* close second. All we need is a little help to catch up, and we're sure to come out first in our category!! :)

Our team of six belly dance students has really worked hard to raise money for Y-ME. And while it's fun perform for the walk participants and to engage in a litle friendly competition as we read how the other teams are doing, we know that there are women, their families, and their friends who face the reality of breast cancer every day. As dancers, we are so fortunate to have our health and to be able to share the joy of Middle Eastern music and dance. So fundraising for Y-ME is fun for us, but we take it seriously, and we couldn't do it without your support.
And if you're so inclined, you can go here to donate http://main.y-me.org/goto/Rajni; if you want to donate to the team in general, there's a link to that there as well. :)
Bellies for Breasts, a team of local students who support the Y-ME Walk to Empower, will be hosting a local hafla on Sunday, March 16 from 3 to 6 PM at Beijing Restaurant in Fredericksburg. Tickets will be $10 in advance ($12 at the door, as space allows) and will benefit Y-ME (www.y-me.org). Admission includes an "all you care to eat" buffet. This is a hafla ("party"), and not a performance, so there will only be dancing if dancers show up (though we plan to have some out-of-town guest dancers)! Come try out your moves from class! There will be open dancing, drumming, raffles and door prizes. If you have a dance that you'd like to share, we'd love to see it, just be in touch so we can work it in.

This year's B4B team includes Cynthia, Gayle, Monica (co-captain; thanks Monica!!), Jen/ Rajni, Natalie, and Allison, and my hubby Mark/ Baris, and I think Chi is walking with us (did I leave anyone out?). We are performing tried-and-true numbers to entertain the walkers on Mother's Day. If you're interested in joining the team for the walk, just contact me and I'll tell you how to join-- anyone can walk with us-- the more the merrier! The B4B dancers are all students who have performed previously and kind of know the ropes as far as student performing goes. Email Jen/ Rajni if you have questions.
Thanks!

Here are the details:

The menu will include:
General Tso's chicken
Vegetable combination*
Pork fried rice
Chicken lo mein
Vegetable rolls*
Chicken cho-cho
Chicken with mixed vegetables
Cash bar

*vegetarian :)

If you want to help out by selling tickets for us, let me know. I'm giving a prize to the person who sells the most tickets over ten!!! I'm printing tickets ASAP and will get them to everyone this week.

Chip from Mountain Mirage in Ch'ville has offered to teach a intro to dumbek class right before the hafla and take donations for us. Chip has studied with Raquy and is an excellent drummer, so as soon as I have more details form him, I'll be promoting this!

Also, we will need a mic/ sound system, if anyone can help with that...

Join Y-ME Mid-Atlantic at George Mason University’s Johnson Center on Sunday, November 4th for a day of fitness and fun!

The 6th Annual Fit for Life offers an opportunity for women and men to actively participate in workshops that cater to the mind, body and spirit. Workshops include, but are not limited to: massage therapy, reiki, dance, salsa aerobics, how to de-clutter, core fitness, as well as writing and art therapy for coping with cancer. Research is increasingly showing that healthful practices may play a major role in illness prevention and/or quicker recuperation. Fit for Life is another program

Y-ME Mid-Atlantic offers to those touched by breast cancer an opportunity to explore complimentary therapies they may want to use as they go through treatment.

This day of wellness education begins with attendees browsing vendor exhibits and the silent auction table. Opening ceremony and keynote occurs during complimentary lunch followed by three 45 or 50-minute wellness workshops, most of which are interactive. There will even be a silent auction and vendor raffle.

See the schedule below - or for more information (or to register) please visit Y-ME's website at http://www.y-me.org/mid-atlantic/events/fit_for_life.php.

Make a donation through the link below in Damiena's message, then email her with your name, donation info, and contact info.

Damiena, a dancer in Maryland (http://www.habibihon.com/damiena/), posted this today on the Bhuz forum:

"Okay ladies! I have decided to raffle away my beautiful teal Pharoanics costume to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Here is how it works:

Make a $10 donation via this link http://www.active.com/donate/tntmd/tntmdAGrinta1 and you will be entered into the raffle. Each $10 gets you a chance to win!

My husband is in remission from Hodgkin's Lymphoma and on October 13th, he is running the Baltimore ½ Marathon with Team in Training to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. We are hosting a fundraiser at a local restaurant called Cazbar on September 22nd and the owner has generously agreed to donate a portion of that evening's proceeds.

We are going to have door prizes and other raffle tickets, but I want to raise the bar a bit and what better way than with a beautiful sparkly?

Once you make your donation, send me an email to damiena AT comcast DOT net with the name your donation is under, your Bhuz name and your email address. I will put your name and info on an index card (one card for each $10) and drop it into a 'fishbowl' for the drawing, which will be held on the evening of the 22nd at Cazbar! Keep the costume or donate it to another dancer! Everyone can enter to win, whether you live in the US or in Timbuktu!! I will post the winner here on Bhuz and email her as well!

Best of luck and thank you in advance for your donations!"

This is the original thread on Bhuz: http://www.bhuz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4175

From other info she gave, the costume is like new, fits about a size 10, B-C cup? Even if it wouldn't fit you, it's for a great cause. You could give it away, sell it, donate it - it's up to you.

Thanks,
Amy (Kiyaana)

The post was over a month ago, but I thought I would give it a shot anyway, so after my late meeting tonight I ran over and found the last of the mirrors in the sale bin. However, I also noticed some fun stuff we could use for costumes. They have belt kits that include 2 long tassles with adornment and the fabric is already embelished with sequins or jewels. I took a picture of them....they are under my profile. I can see many uses!! Also found were some really fun trims, a package of mutli-sized mirrors that could be added to anything, and some embroidered appliques made in India. Very cool stuff!

I've been to this event for the past 2 years and I'm already registered for this year. Lots of tribal dancing and workshops, drumming, music, etc, etc., plus a really fun and laid back atmosphere--- we've met the nicest folks through DID! It's a camping event, but there is a motel about 15 minutes away. The site in the mountains, on the Eustler's beautiful farm!

Here's an official blurb and link:

Greetings from DID Central. It is a cold, windy day in January and I am dreaming of warm, dry days and nights in early June at Spirithaven filled with music, dance and enjoying eacother's company. DID is coming faster than we realize and I am late in getting this information to you. I apologize and have plenty of good excuses if anyone wants to hear them. Nevertheless I am pleased to inform you that we have another DID experience for you all, the dates of which are June 1st, 2nd and 3rd 2007. Our current minister of Information and high-pitched hand-percussion, Carla Monnich, has graciously volunteered to get a new posting on the website and I will be sending updates to her with some regularity.
The particulars regarding registration and fees have not changed this year but may have to be adjusted next year. The tuition is $100.00 for registrations received by March 1st 2007 and are once again $125.00 for those coming in after that date. If you can register early it will be good for all of us as we are expecting a good response from the article that Kristie was kind enough to write for us that appeared in Zaghreet magazine. We are limited to 100 participants as usual. We have some great faculty and entertainment scheduled for you and can promise one thing at this point. Turku will be with us once again in full-force! Please keep an eye on the website for updates and expect a few surprises!
If anyone wishes to post this notice to Tribe, I'd appreciate it. We changed computers and updated our lists and did not receive responses from some of our original Citizens. I do not want to leave anyone out of the loop. Any community involvement is welcomed. If you wish to regsiter and the new form is not posted on www.touchtheearth.com , feel free to use the old one.
Thanks to you all for your friendship to us and support of this event!

With Warmest Regards,

Sheque/Scott

I am not giving my address on a public forum, and I need an idea of how many people *SO* if you would like to come you need to email me, ha ha! (if you already know where I live then you should still give me a heads up :-) )

Warning: I have four cats. At least one likes people. Those with allergies may want to keep that in mind.

What to bring: well, hair would be good. I recommend Kanekelon hair, it's the cheap stuff (under $5). Or yarn if you want to go that route (not as cheap but sure takes less time!). baubles and whatever also work. And a flat iron or heavy duty blow dryer or even a steamer (may or may not work but you can bring it and we'll see) would be helpful though we'll share otherwise (hafta share anyway as i don't have enough outlets).

I'll have some snackies but you're more than welcome to bring something if you want.

I am not a professional fall maker. I will just be showing what I do, which I learned from this site: http://quinnster.fqdn.net/ .

I also have two TVs in one room. I don't have a lot of BD stuff (Superstars in Paris...um...maybe some other stuff) so if you have a DVD you wanna bring, sure.

Dance, drum and support a great cause
On Mother's Day local bellydancers and drummers will be participating in the Walk to Empower, organized by Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization, with our team B4B. B4B has its own tribe too!

Come join the team of Belly Dancers, Drummers, Friends and Family as we support a great cause and have a great time! No, you don't have to be a belly dancer to join us, but you might be one by the end of the day!

There is no registration fee, but Y-ME recommends that every walker set a goal to raise $100 or more. You can still walk with us even if you don't raise funds.

To make sure that our team looks sharp on Walk Day, we are planning a great new t-shirt design courtesy of Yaalini and Josephine. More details to come soon, but we'll probably order from Custom Ink again.

Once you've signed up as a member of our team, you can access your own personal Y-ME Walk Center, where you can create a personalized Web page, and accept credit card donations in support of your efforts. Our team has set a goal of raising $2000 and it is through your participation, and the support of our friends, colleagues and family that we will be successful. On behalf of Y-ME and Bellies for Breasts, thanks for your support, and we look forward to seeing you on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 14th.

If you can't make it to the Walk, please support our team by making a donation at my team's Web page, accessible by visiting the link below. Please let us know if we can walk in honor or memory of someone you know. You will be with us in spirit!

Monday classes will start back Jan 8. The 7pm class is for new students and anyone wanting to focus primarily on technique - continuing students sign up for the 8pm class. I started teaching at Fredericksburg Parks and Recreation Dept in the fall of 2002. Up until this year, classes have included Kawakib's American Tribal Style, Tribe Odyssey, format (TO); however, students wanting to learn TO will now need to sign up with Kawakib's classes. We will continue to focus on combinations to improve our improv vocabulary, finger cymbals, and my choreographies. Our holiday get together at Nader's Middle Eastern Cafe went well, and I would like to plan regular "invasions" to dance and drum at the cafe.

Happy New Year!
