I remember watching something from a while ago - I don't know for sure, but I have a strong feeling that this was a hindi ritual.
It was a day of suffering, and day that our deeds we've done here, we cause pain to ourselves to seek - not forgiveness - but a sort of... action in retribution to what we've done...
