I have a Mac Mini with Premiere 6.5, and my problem is with the capture. I'm using an older Digi-8 camera, by sony. This camera has worked just fine in many past projects, even with this same computer.

Despite having tried every capture setting change I could find to adjust (audio sample rate and compressor) I keep getting this problem. I've tried capturing with the batch capture and manually. I've closed and re-opened, I've trashed entire projects with clips and started over from scratch. Yet I am still getting this strange effect.

Oh, I've also cleared out a bunch of large files, clearing off 30 gigabytes of disc space, to no avail.

What happens: During the capture, at any point between 300 and 1300 frames captured, the capturing will pause, though the video continues. It then goes for another little while, and again the capture pauses while the video plays, then capture starts again. The result is a clip with neatly removed sections of video. You'd never know that it wasn't an in-camera edit if you weren't watching it happen.

My fear is that it has something to do with the hard-drive speed, but I have captured with this device and others on this computer before, with no such problem.

Is it my camcorder? my genes? Any ideas?

Okay, Hatdog found this out for me, although she didn't bother to join or post. How's that for support?

At any rate: There seems to be known problems with OS X 10.4.9 that are not present with 10.4.8. To wit:

    dvinfo.net/conf/showthread.php
Near the bottom of this discussion about FinalCut Pro, David mentions that there have been problems associated with FCP and 10.4.9.

This must be the source of his info:
    docs.info.apple.com/article.html

    I also found this page:
    www.downloadsquad.com/categor.../rss.xml

and, specifically, this bit of text under the blurb about a free preview of the latest Premiere:

"....There is a big gotcha if you are running Mac OS 10.4.9. DV Capture will not be functional, and that's kinda a big deal. Adobe is working with Apple to resolve this problem, but if you want to capture DV with the preview version, Adobe recommends you reinstall the OS using your original system discs, then update to 10.4.8..... "

SO, a lot of data showing problems with 10.4.9 and firewire digital sources in general, naming Premiere and FCP. Could this be similar to my problem?

Well shit fire and save matches: I did an "Archive and restore" on the Mac, then re-updated the release to 10.4.8. Total Success!!! I am back to capturing perfectly.

    Thanks Hatty! XO
