We plunge into this section as if we had already been following the adventures of a club of aeronauts called the Chums of Chance.
They fly a 5-man 1-dog crew hydropgren skyship called the "Inconvenience".
They are (in order of introduction):
-Darby Suckling- the "baby of the crew" "served as both factotum and mascotte, singing as well the difficult treble parts" he seems just a boy
-Lindsey Noseworth- 2nd in command. disciplinarian of the crew. doesn't like incorrect grammer or swearing or anarchism. he punishes Darby for saying "Oh Boy" by hanging him over the edge of the skyship. Lacks a smell that Pugnax always finds in other humans.
-Randolph St. Cosmo - Captain
-Miles Blundell- Handyman Apprentice, clumsey.
-Chick Counterfly - newest member. from an unhealthy social class (which one - lower, i think) with bad habits of speech. Adolescent. Voice cracks. His dad once tried to "sell the state of Mississippi to a mysterious Chinese consortium based in Tijuana, Mexico." Picked up by the Chums running from a KKK mob.
-Pugnax- Dog with expressive eyebrows who probably can read- at least acts like it. rescued from D.C. by the chums. crew members seem to understand his barks.
Mention of "chums of chance" insignia- is that the triple mountain thing?
The charter of the "Chums of Chance" directs them "never to interfere with legal customs of any locality down at which we may happen to have touched."

An adventures two week previous where they attempted "to negotiate a bitter and unresolved "piece of business"" from the civil war.
They feel like turn of the century boy's story adventurers.
At the end of the section, Chick is getting cold. they talk about how going up in elevation is like going North. Chick points out that if you go far enough north then you will start going south again. then the following exchange happens:
"Yes." The skyship commander shrugged uncomfortably.
"So... if you went up high enough, you'd be going -down- again?"
"Shh!" Warned Randolph St. Cosmo.
"Approaching the suface of -another planet-, maybe?"Chick persisted.
"Not exactly. No. Another 'surface,' but an earthly one. Often to our regret, all to earthly. More than that, I am reluctant-"
"These are mysteries of the profesion." Chick supposed.
"You'll see. In time, of course."
very weird. not sure what to make of it. crashing? other dimentions? aliens?
