Vimalananda, the subject of this book, and Aghori Guru, designed the cover and dictated to the author the following regarding its symbolic meaning: "Ghora is darkness, the darkness of ignorance. Aghora means light, the absence of darkness. Under the Tree of Knowledge is an Aghori, a follower of the path of Aghora. He has gone beyond ignorance thanks to the Flame of Knowledge which billows from the funeral pyre. The funeral pyre is the ultimate reality, a continual reminder that everyone has to die. Knowledge of the ultimate reality of Death has taken the Aghori beyond the Eight Snares of Existence: lust, anger, greed, delusion, envy, shame, disgust and fear which bind all beings. The Aghori plays with a human skull, astonished by the uselessness of limited existence, knowing the whole world to be within him though he is not in the world. His spiritual practices have awakened within him the power of Kundalini, which takes the form of the goddess dancing on the funeral pyre: Smashan Tara. He is bewildered to think that all is within him, not external to him; that he sees it not with the physical eyes but with the sense of perception. The Flame of Knowledge is that which preserves life, the Eternal Flame, the Supreme Ego, the Motherhood of God which creates the whole Maya of the universe and thanks only to Whose grace the Aghori has become immortal." Chinnamasta Offering.

Chinnamasta flanked by Jaya and Vijaya and her classic pose with an offering of an Animal's head I believe. The Goddess to the left I am not sure about, I think it's Bhavani (any suggestions) and on the right there appears to be Dhumavathi.

This is Maa Soshika. A very esoteric Goddess, who is the high priestess of Sri Chakra. The scissors she holds is her power to cut the gordian knots of existence that bind you to physical embodiment.

Maa Tara Murthy of Tarapith.

This is the Tara Pith Murthy, with fresh blood on her mouth. Behind this Murthi is a very rarely seen stone that was found in nature itself which naturally looks like Tara Maa. It is only taken out for worship very rarely, and not many has seen it.

This is Maa Kali with her Yogini Staff. Kali is actually referred to as a Maha Yogini, so you will see in some pictures she will have the characteristic skull topped staff of a Yogini, as per the Chandi Patha.

I found this picture and they say this is Dhumavati, but because she has no crow emblem I actually believe that this is Bhairavi.

This is Chinna Masta Devi. She is flanked by Jaya and Vijaya. She stands over Rati and Kama, showing that though mastery of your primal instincts one can sever the head of the ego. When this happens the Sushmana, Ida, and Pingala flow free. The three spurts of blood also show that by severing the head of the ego one can possibly enter in the three divine Chakras that exist outside of the body. Most think there are seven Chakras, there are actually nine. Three above the head. This also shows that mother sustains and devours all life, and is imminent and present in the universe through her will and manifests as desire.
