Fear or energy?

Ive been noticing, more and more during meditation, that I've been getting these feelings like fear. Except it isn't fear, I'm not afraid, but my body seems to go into the process of fear, like goosebumps on my arms. What is this? Ive noticed that this has been happening randomly at other times, like during school or just walking somewhere, I'll feel it, when I breathe in. But it always happens during meditation. I've searched for some answers on the net, and all I've found was that it could possibly be me sensing spirits around me, but the thing is, I'm not mentally afraid, its just my body. Any thoughts?

This is possibly because of few many reasons. As per eastern philosophy fear is caused when more than one tattva are aroused in your body. This effect (fear) can be influenced (you ideally don’t want the tattvas to subside during meditation) using few practices. Most important one is that you need to focus on something, you are absolutely keeping your mind blank which is causing your brain to function in a very unusual way (unknown = fear). Keeping your eyes opened could help to a great extend. Another school of thought is that your kundalini is moving downwards - a usual situation among beginners – take proper guidance from your meditation teacher to avoid this. If your life energy (call it kundalini for the time being :)) is moving down then in your physical life this will pull you down. Take measure to rectify such a situation. This is also triggered by taking ‘contradictory food’ like honey and Ghee. Nothing but slight food poison. Another reason for the fear could be because lack of pressure control within the body during meditation. Mudras are for correcting the pressure issue through properly blocking the pressure across various pressure points in the body – again go back to your teacher.

You are in the right mind set, do focus on few areas and you could achieve good results. All the best. Hope this help.

Thank you for the information, its nice to see some different ideas about this. I do not have a meditation teacher, so anything like this that happens remains unknown to me unless I search for the information myself, and even then it may be wrong.

You are right, most of the time I keep my mind as blank as possible. When I feel the 'fear' it sometimes starts with the whole feeling, but lately its been coming from a certain spot, like someones finger touches me and that spot resonates with the feeling then it goes along my lower to upper body. One time I felt a 'finger' on the top left side of my head, and last night I felt one on my left arm or the left side of my back, I can't remember. This 'fear' feeling intensifies when I'm breathing in, like waves. Its not necessarily a bad feeling, I think two or three nights ago I was meditating and I thought to myself, "Shiva is touching me" and I visualized myself where I am, except sitting in Shiva's lap. And I had a lot of these 'fear' feelings come at me, so much that tears came out of both of my eyes. I thought maybe this is a good thing, but maybe not so much if the kundalini is going down instead of up. Anything else I should keep in mind for my next meditation?

To me you seem to have the blessing to get the progress till date. To ensure you continue in the same path, let me communicate few things in a clear (or direct or rude) manner. Don’t take it offensive.

Shiva is not the objective of meditation, he is neither the path nor the destination. If you need a diety then consider Lordess Maha Maya (who is nothing but the nature itself) who rules all the worlds and every heart alive and dead as the right path. In scientific terms leave all hallucinations regarding Lord Shiva. Instead focus on what is going on with your breath, as if like following it where ever it goes. See if you could keep your focus exactly at the place where your breath is. If this is achieved then explore the next level in the progress.

Identifying a teacher and getting his blessing is recommended at this stage since you are stepping in to exercising with the life energy. I am not interested to be a teacher nor allowed nor skilled enough :)

I am open to sharing what I learned from my experience but mind you this will be unique to individuals. Learn to travel, but follow no footsteps.

        Love and peace

I take no offense, without a teacher I'm simply trying to discern things myself until I find one. I'm open to anything, really, and you're helping me, so for that I thank you.

When I focus on my breath, should I focus on where it is inside my body, or focus on it being inside my body then traveling out, or just what happens to my breath after it leaves?

It's a shame, I'm still technically 'too young' in my society to do anything outside of school and whats expected of me at home. Maybe once I can get my own foot in this society, I can go to India or or someplace, and find a teacher. I am making good use of this time though, I've been trying to learn Hindi.

Thank you again. You may not be a teacher but anything you can tell me from personal experience will be invaluable to me, I realize that my path is my own path though, as you said, "Learn to travel, but follow no footsteps. "

This is called shiharan in Sanskrit. By the process of meditation specially inhale if the consciousness passes from central nervous system to peripheral nervous system this happens. It is common to fear, passion, happiness, surprise and sometimes anger even. When it is not mental it is only physical it can be shiver too. Shiver happens in cold and high heat both.

In your case it seems to be divine feelings within during meditation when your inhale is deep and passes through Sushumna channel. You are lucky to get this experience yourself. It shows that you have past samskaras.

    Adseh!
