Meditation experience

The other night I was meditating and instead of the usual dark room, I closed my curtains and shut off my computer lights as well, also putting a shirt in the crack under my door. Not completely dark, but really close to it. I could sit in one spot and depending on where it was I could close my eyes and open them and not know the difference.

I was doing my usual meditation, sitting cross legged, back straight, looking into the dark trying to clear my mind. I usually focus inside, but after a while of my normal meditation I began to physically look outward into the darkness. I felt the need to breathe in and out, didn't think this was out of the ordinary since during meditation my breathing becomes very low. I started to breathe in and out of my nose. The keywords became, in and out, I repeated them in my mind. I started to feel a little fear as I was breathing, the light specks that you always see in your eyes became clustered like when you rub your eyes hard and open them. After a couple breaths these cleared away and I saw a few white specks in front of my, kind of like looking into the sky at night. Then I stopped the breathing (not entirely, I returned to my normal breathing). The I felt like everything in front of me was in a circle. But within that circle was, kind of another world, one god (if there is any) could see into. It was like I was in a vacuum. I could hear and was still away of the outside world, but I felt like it couldn't possibly affect me in any way. My body kind of melted away, I was still away of it but it's importance wasn't apparent. I visualized the world and some other things.

I stopped because my leg was feeling numb due to my posture. I didn't have to stop but I felt like I should. What felt like a little numbness was half my leg being almost completely numb. Many people try to say during meditation to visualize the openness of the darkness within and such, but only until now did I really see how far that can reach.

Was this a trance? Questions? Comments? Similar experiences? Any experiences during meditation you'd like to share?

It's my belief that most meditation experiences are due to neurons seeking out new connections into different areas of the brain than where they are usually connected. There are 300 billion neurons in the brain with a million billion connections. That's an incredible vista of inner space.

Thus, I'm not sure it's helpful, or even possible to interpret exactly what happens in these kinds of experiences, other than to say that your meditation appears to be working in that it is engendering a neurological revision in your brain.

According to the folks who taught me meditation, this sort of thing is something you wonder about for a second and then drop. It's just another fence post on the road. To make or hold it as significant just means you won't make it to the next post as quickly as you'll be stuck examining the one than lies before it.

I did it again last night. Definitely not a trance, but that's the only way I could think of explaining what it maybe was. I notice that it may not have as much to do with meditation as it does with a lack of breath, but I think the darkness and the long meditation period is what allows it to be possible, because I couldn't do this during the daytime in light. As soon as I take the deep breaths and go back to default breathing (not really paying attention to it) within seconds I feel like my body dissolves into the darkness and only my sight is left, and I only see darkness of course. It's a very peaceful state of mind, and it allows for a deeper meditation than I was previously doing, I have a very poor imagination, visualizing things become much easier and with greater depth. Maybe not a spiritual experience, but maybe a step in the right direction. I also noted that I felt a certain pressure in my head, not annoying or distracting in the least, but a slight pressure I noticed up until i went to sleep (I do this before I go to sleep at night, only then I can have the darkness and least noise). I forgot to say, I get goosebumps and I feel a little afraid as I breathe in.

It sounds to be certainly that. Breath suspension is a well-known effect of meditation, and is said to accompany some samadhi states. What's the signal? Keep doing what you are doing, until you decide to do something else.

Thank you, I appreciate the input. I always felt like there was a block in my meditation until now, now it seems like I can go a lot farther.

Who knows? But in the end, rather than taking you farther, good meditation should bring you right back to where you've always been.

      >but I think the darkness and the long meditation period is what allows it to be possible.
      True.

      >I also noted that I felt a certain pressure in my head, not annoying or distracting in the least, but a slight pressure I noticed up until i went to sleep.

You may be getting energy around your Ajana chakra or Third Eye Chakra.
Do you have a Guru? It's better have one who guides you.
      Also a important note-
If you get even a slightest feeling of something being wrong, just Stop as you need a true guru to help you in controlling the energy.

      >It's a very peaceful state of mind.
Yes it is! I've been doing meditation for some time and I've been having getting some of the same peaceful effects as you.
