I know Tribe has been pest lately. One day it's up, the next 3 days they're doing "maintenance." So... I wanna know what's going on with you!? :-)
What are you working on? New choreography? Are you planning a hafla? Taking an interesting workshop? What's inspiring you right now?
I'll start.
~Right now I working on about 5 different choreographies and I have a few shows coming up. The first show is a cane dance for a documentary called "The American Belly Dancer." We're shooting that this Friday down in Monterey. The next project is Cairo Couture's Raq the Runway in SF! I'm so excited about this event! I can't wait to see the new line of Eman Zaki costumes :-)
~Lets see... after that I'll be performing in the Luna Guitana evening show down in Santa Cruz. This should be fun because Aziza's the featured dancer and I looove watching her perform.
~Lately I've been watching a lot of Cirque Du Soliel's "Dralion" dvd. It's so inspiring and amazing the things people can do with their bodies :-0
~My dvd project is on hiatus until I move and get settled in.
~And I'm going back to Egypt next spring! Woo Hoo!!!!!
So what's up with you?

Re: Is anybody out there?
Mon, October 20, 2008 - 7:55 PMHello Ahava,
It's good to see that you are still at it and still have time to engage us.
Raks Africa is rehearsing for a new show with Big Moves called Dance at Large. It's at Laney college 11/7 & 7. Check my profile for more info. I'm also working on a solo piece to hopefully unveil at the end of the year. RA is also working on a piece for 2009 gigs, something new with cane.
Outside of BD I've got my hands full with work projects. I'm getting back on track with my health with my personal trainer and some new cookbooks. I'm looking forward to some time off in late November.

Tue, October 21, 2008 - 7:23 AMHi Ahava,
It's good to hear all is well with you, and it sounds like you have some really fun and exciting events coming up.
I just took the Aida Nour workshop this past weekend and what can I say, WOW. I love that woman! It was one of the best workshops I've taken. I'll also be dancing in another hafla the Nov. 1st. Now I just need to pick some music and start practicing. I'm such a procrastinator, lol.
I'm also looking forward to some much needed vacation time(early December for me). I'm gonna go out of town for a few days for some relaxation. Not sure yet, maybe Puerto Rico, but definitely somewhere warm!

Re: Is anybody out there?
Tue, October 21, 2008 - 8:40 AMHEY YOU! well everything for me has been kinda up in the air. I'm living in Spain for 9 months and i've been here for a month now. Its definitely a different belly dance scene and i can't do everything i used to. I'm not sure that there's any regular performance gigs, i have no practice space, and gyms in spain are quite a different concept, lol. But I'm workin it out. I'm more of a mental worker than a physical worker a lot of the time. (i'm not sure if anyone else is like that). ANYHOO I'm going to Barcelona next month to work with Munique Neith and Ashraf Hassan so i'm looking forward to that. I guess i'm in a HUGE limbo in my life right now lol. I spend most of my time trying to learn this goddamn language lol, but once i become more settled here I'll start moving towards more here. (ps if your from spain you might be seeing some workshops and class from yours truely so watch out) :o)

Re: Is anybody out there?
Tue, October 21, 2008 - 1:33 PMHey there Ahava!
Compared to me, everyone seems so productive...
My world is a little dyslexic right now. I'm practicing for a fundraiser show this weekend (I'm doing a partial veil piece and a drum solo) while applying for a study abroad program and finishing my research at school. (Give me my Master's, or give me death!) Aside from that I'm looking into going to a workshop/hafla in Georgia in December. I am also making plans to attend BOCA fest in May. My troupe is in the planning stages of making a vaudeville show sometime in the new year so I can't wait for that. I want to audition as a dancer at the local Moroccan restaurant but I'm not sure anymore because 1.) The economy is down so there aren't as many patrons as before, 2.) They've never had a black bellydancer, and 3.)I'm nervous about auditioning because of reason #2.
As of right now, my inspiration is running low and I'm looking for a pick me up. I'm also trying to improve my practicing habits. Does anyone know where I can find some good practice music?

Re: Is anybody out there?
Tue, October 21, 2008 - 4:08 PMHi Ahava,
It is so nice to hear from you and look forward to your upcoming performance as always!!
I'm working on a choreography with a troupe that I just joined, Joweh. We have an upcoming performance at Sonoma State University. My first time in a troupe and I love it! We will also perform at the Carnival of Stars on 11/9 & so I'm trying to play catch up and learn their choreographies. We are also working on a piece to perform over seas!!
As far as solo performances, I've cut back to due demands from work. So I'm just dancing here and there and enjoyiong it. I hope I can make it to Leah's anniversary party. Sundays are tuff for me though.
Take care and much love,
Roya

Thu, October 23, 2008 - 9:17 AMSalaam Ahava, how are you??
I saw your performance today on Jillina s shape up and hip out program!!!
your performance moved me to tears, honestly, and your sa3idi was soooo damn pretty..
awesome!!!!!!!!!!!
I d love to be able to see you on dvd and learn from you! so what s planned????
PLUS there are so few dark-skinned dancers and frankly I find it soo refreshing to see great dark-skinned dancers!!
More diversity please not only in performance (which seems to be a bit more balanced in the US?) and in instruction!! :)
You r such a joy to look at, thanks a lot for this moving performance!
warmest regards

Re: Is anybody out there?
Mon, October 27, 2008 - 10:27 PMIt's alive!!!! LOL :-) Well ladies, I'm glad to see that you're all keeping busy in dance and everyday life.
Tammy- I'm going to try and make it to that performance on the 7th. I haven't seen you perform in a while. That's on a friday right? I used to go to Laney before I moved out to Pleasanton :-)
Lynn- Aida was in the Bay Area this past weekend and I was so bummed that I missed out :-( I really wanted to take her workshops but my weekend was so full. As for your vacation... I say go to Puerto Rico!!!! That sounds like so much fun :-)
Amanda- How are you? Are you studying abroad for school, or are you all done? What's the food like in Spain? Am I asking you enough questions? lol :-)
Hi Razi- How's it going? About the resturant gig, if you feel like you're ready to perform then I say do it! The economy has had an effect on the resturants but when you get the gig you'll learn different ways on how to entertain if the resturant is full or half empty :-) At the resturant I work at I am the only black dancer and it hasn't really been an issue.
Roya- Where is your troupe performing at overseas? Are you still teaching in Mexico next year? I'd love to see you at Leea's student night. We need to catch up! I want to know all about what happened in Dallas :-)
Salaam Dina- Thank you for the compliments :-) I'm glad you enjoyed the performances. My plan for my dvd series is to teach: Drum solo, Melaya Luff, Cane, Shabbi and Raks Sharqi. Hopefully I can get started on them at the beginning of next year. -
