I was first turned onto the wonders of hemp, the same way most of the people my age were turned on. Thru jack herer's wonderful book, the Emperor. It was 92 , and we figured we had found a way to truly save our planet.... or in the least the province we all lived in. Manitoba is in the centre of the prairies and located in the middle of canada. With literaly millions of growable acres's thruout the praires, it is the obvious choice for canadians to plant their hemp.Within a few years of learning all we could about hemp/cannabis we put together a plan to make things happen. we wanted to not simply around puffing joints and dreaming about what could be, we decided to make our dreams reality> By choosing students from the University of manitoba to join our newly created group, THE MANITOBA HEMP ALLIANCE, we had the straight faces that the system seemed to love so much> keep in mind, we were a bunch of long haired freaks who realy just loved sitting around and puffing on jah herb. This was not the face we could show our government while asking permision to grow a plant that had not been planted legaly in over 73 years in our country.
With the help of the manitoba hemp alliance we managed to associate ourselves with one jack moes' who was working at the time with the federal government. It was his name that we would ship our hemp seed from the UKraine. (Rewind a few years to the cannabis cup in amsterdam 93 where we met an american by the name of john> He was living in the ukraine and trying to get this hemp movement going. As in the ukraine they never stopped growing it all these years, so they had strains available that could grow in our province. Ukraine and manitoba have very similiar temperments thruout the year. John was in amsterdam at the cup hoping on hooking up with hempminded people. He was a bit surprised to see it was realy mostly a cannabis party and there was very little about hemp. however us meeting up was exactly what he was hoping for.) we had a small hemp store in manitoba at the time, winnipeg to be precise, and we were realy hooked on seperating the two, ie cannabis for smoking and hemp for growing. This was a strategy we figured would make it that much easier for us to get this plant growing on our soil. With jack's book the emperor, quoting from a popolar mechanics article from the thirties, calling hemp the billion dollar crop. Keep in mind this was the first time billion and dollar were ever used in an aconomic statement. This was huge. So we approached our government will all we knew about hemp and its possibillities in todays market place. WE called our proposal the TRILLION DOLLAR CROP,and we proposed it to our ministre of agriculture Harry Ens. Well to make a long story short, we managed in just over 9 months, to get our application thru to ottawa for approval, and grew our first organic hemp fields in 95. One year after joe stroble, the tobacco farmer and jeff kime grew canada's first hemp field in over 73 years. It was thru those two gentlenmen that we were able to discover the phytoremidiation properties of hemp. As joe was a tobacco farmer, his fields were actively sprayed with radium 226, a radioactive nucleaotide that is used not only to combat insects, but realy used to raise nicotene levels of the plant on the field. After several years of growing the hemp on this field, they noticed their radioactivity levels dropping. This was the birth of the chernobyle phytoremidiation program that was started in 97 by CGP, consolodated growers and processors. A company that was basicaly started out of the work we did in the early years in manitoba. It was thru this company that i first saw hemp metal, which is stronger than titanium, and lighter than aluminum>
This company however turned out to be a sham, as the women who was behind it, was extremly slick, she did all she could to milk our community of millions of dollars we didnt even know we had. However many years later, several companies have continued on thru the work we did back in the early nineties in manitoba. INcluding freshhemp foods www.emperor.com > selling high quality seed , oil, and dehulled seed for eating and food purpose.
I will continue with our story in the near future.
Hope this small historical for our little scene is inspiring to those out there, that want to change things, but don't believe they can' truly make any great change. It only takes a group of people who truly believe, and you can make great things happen. I would have never believed that within a year, of us starting this, we would be standing in our very own hemp stand.
Give thanks to the Plant and all its wonderful uses.
