Y-M-C-A!
(okay. now that i've got that song stuck in your collective heads...)
Ms. D and i scored one-week passes from Summer and have gone twice now to the Y. We have concluded that it's....adequate. Barely. There are only four treadmills and a handful of elliptical machines, and while we haven't had to wait for a machine yet, people have been waiting for us. It's small, and ....well, not exactly well-appointed. It's also $44/month for singletons, which is hardly the bargain I was hoping for - I'd been quoted $25/month. For that low price, it would totally have been worth it. But for $44, it's less of a deal. It does have a pool, though, which is nice.
Nevertheless, that's still cheaper than the Alaska Club. Ms. D and I do pretty well as workout partners - I'd like to incorporate weights into the workout, but I think just getting our asses there is a positive first step.
I haven't switched over to the Y yet, but we're leaning towards it. Anyone else have any recommendations to try before signing yet another contract? Amber, I know you go someplace down south...it's probably not worth the drive for me - I have enough trouble going to someplace where I can literally walk from my house...!

Re: the Y
Fri, January 26, 2007 - 10:05 PMI hate to be a bother about this, but have you talked to shanny, and what did she say? As far as I can tell, she is an expert on alternatives to the Alaska Club.

Re: the Y
Fri, January 26, 2007 - 10:06 PMwhile I don't have any specific advice, I'd like to say, don't discount the south side yet. I took a class last year in the Subway Center (or whatever its called) on OMalley and Seward. I was dreading that it was so far, but I just hopped on Minnesota, and I was there in no time.
And yes, I agree, the only plus to the Y is the pool. And it is kept so warm that it feels like you are swimming in hell. -

Re: the Y
Fri, January 26, 2007 - 11:58 PM...but it's saltwater and not chlorine!
Yeah, I take my mom to the Y twice a week for therapeutic swimming. It's not my place of choice.
My membership comes to $30/month or so, at Polaris in the Huffman shopping center. It does everything I need with plenty of cardio machines, weight machines, and free weights. There are yoga, pilates, and boxing conditioning classes in the evenings (boxing is insanely popular so I'll probably skip that for crowds... but it's a great time to sneak in and use the weights because everyone's in the class).
I had a rate sheet and schedule, but of course I can't find them right now. I think it's like $40/month if you go on a month-by-month basis. I'll look more into it. To me it's worth it, but i pretty much live on Huffman.

Re: the Y
Sat, January 27, 2007 - 9:53 AMUAA and APU is open to non-students too.. I go there to swim when West Pool's hours don't suit me.
Here is the schedule:
www.uaa.alaska.edu/recreati...index.cfm
Rates are OK:
$5/session
Punch Cards (20 sessions):$80
$200 for semester
The semester rate is really steep, especially since it is not prorated. But for me, not being able get there alot, the $5 sessions and punch cards work.
