Al Amir is now offering FREE belly dance lessons! Starting June 4th

Join us at Al Amir Greenville on Wednesday nights starting June 4th for FREE bellydance lessons. Instruction will be provided by Yeli, Tamra Henna and Sa'diyya, all house dancers at Al Amir and dance instructors in the DFW area.

This is a great opportunity to bring a friend or relative out that is interested in bellydance but not ready to take the leap to classes yet. This is also a great night out for anyone with a little shimmy in their hips! We will offer 45 minute to 1 hour lessons that will change each week. We will start with the basics and see what happens! Since each week is something different so you can jump in at anytime. It's like a bellydance buffet!

Classes will begin at 8:30 in the club area of Al Amir and we will provide hip scarves for everyone until they are gone. Everyone will have the opportunity to practice what they have learned as we open up the dance floor to everyone while the DJ spins some great music.

After the classes, everyone is invited to stick around and enjoy a professional performance by one of our dancers.

No purchase is necessary to join the class or watch the performance but you may want to relax with a hookah in the club or try the Chicken Shwarma and the yummy hummus!

This week Yeli will be starting us off with lessons on June 4th at 8:30pm. The performance will actually take place BEFORE the class this time. Show time around 8pm. So come early for the performance and stay for the class!

Help!

I am trying to put together a presentation dedicated to the diversity of dance and I need photos. I am looking for photos of dancers....all styles(not just ME dance styles ALL dance), genders, heights, weights, ethnicities, and ages. I am looking for the variety of photos too...action shots, posed shot, group shots, solo shots, rehearsal shots, preparation shots....etc.

Al Amir opens new location in Addison!

Hi all,

I'm pleased to announce that Al Amir is now in Addison! Now there are two locations for you to come and see some of Dallas' most talented hippy chicks get their shimmy on!

The grand opening was March 10, and for now, there will be nightly shows at 8:30pm (show times here are subject to change in the future, so stay tuned for updates). AA Addison is open 7 days a week, so come on down, enjoy some delicious Lebanese food, and support your local belly dancer!

AA Addison is located at 3885 Belt Line Road, Addison, TX (in between Marsh and Midway Road on Belt Line). They are open for lunch and dinner, and the venue is upscale - this is a restaurant, not a nightclub.

Al Amir's Greenville Avenue location is still open, and still has dancing - regular dance times for AA Greenville are: Friday/Saturday at 8:30 and 10:30pm, and Sunday at 9:30pm, with shows by special request on Weds/Thurs nights. AA Greenville is still a disco - book your parties there if you want to get your debke on!

IMPORTANT - Please read if you are planning on attending the NTMEDA workshop this weekend

In the words of Tribe – DONUT Freak Out!

We have encountered a small hiccup in our plans for this weekend’s workshop, but our NTMEDA board has dutifully fixed the problem!

There was a conflict (double booking) that was just realized by the Hurst Rec. Center. We have found an alternate location that may be more central for many of our members

The times of the workshops are NOT changing, the classes offered are NOT changing and the instructors are NOT changing. The only thing that is changing is the venue.

All activities will now be located at the Grapevine Community Activities Center (1175 Municipal Way in grapevine). This location is just off of Main Street, directly behind the Grapevine Convention Center (where Yaa Halla Y'all is held). Same side of the road, same color brick, just a few buildings north of the Convention Center.

Current member or not, professional dancer, hobbist, beginner dancer, all interested in MED this is for you!

What would you like to see from NTMEDA?
This is a VERY general question but we are trying to cater to the dance community as much as possible and would love to hear from you!

Here are some ideas:
What kinds of things/articles do you want to see in the Papyrus?
-what you do/don't like about the curret publication
What kind of events would you support if NTMEDA provided them?
-inexpensive workshops
-lecture series
-cultural outings
-mixers
-haflas
-cofee meetups
-anything else/suggestions!?
Discounts to local dance events & boutiques for members only?
-a membership card with your re-newal date to present at discount providers
What would make you want/continue to be member of NTMEDA and why not?

Audrena (www.audrena.com) will be in town this weekend at the Holiday Inn Express, 1655 N. Central Expressway in Richardson. Take a break from the Thanksgiving gouging to drool over some sparklies!
She has a new shipment of Pharonics costumes directly from Egypt that haven't been opened! All in stock AND custom orders duing this weekend are $600!
An amazing price since Pharonics costumes will be $800 come 2008! So get your orders in before the price hike!

November 4th, 2:30 P.M. to 4:30 P.M.
Crosby Recreation Center (1610 E. Crosby Road, Carrollton, TX 75006)

There will be lots of great gently used (and some new) costumes and accessories at this sale representing all the diverse styles of bellydance here in the DFW area. This is one sale you don't want to miss!!

No entry fee for NTMEDA members, $2 for non-members. You can also register for your membership or renew your membership at the sale.

If you would like to have a table at this event, you must be an NTMEDA member. There is no table charge for members. You may also bring your own hanging rack. It would be nice to know, just in case . . . .

Hadia will be in town this weekend for the Level I teacher training, so there will be some out of town guests. They might want to have a group outing one night and Al Amir is one place to take them if they want to dance and watch dancing. Not sure what Hadia will want to do, but I thought I'd check out who is dancing on which nights.

It's the party that never ends! After a full and crazy weekend with Fifi Abdo, I've organized a hafla at Al Amir for Sunday night! If you're inspired and burning with belly dance fever after the weekend, join us!

There is no cover charge, please join us for dinner, drinks, and DANCING! Several dancers in from out of town as well as a few from the Metroplex will be gracing the Al Amir stage. So far, our lineup is:

Hello everyone!

Al Amir is pleased to present an audition night Wednesday, April 25 starting at 8pm. This is a call for established or up and coming professional-level cabaret style dancers. This is your opportunity to perform at one of the biggest and best Arabic nightclubs in the country!

Knowledge and use of Arabic music is a must. Must know how to play finger cymbals and use a veil. Sword, cane, fire, wings, or other props are encouraged. Dancers with improvisational skills are preferred. Dancers with at least two years' performance experience preferred.

Each auditioner will get a 10 minute slot to showcase her abilities. For more information, please contact me via pm or email.

DRUMMERS AND DANCERS please join us. PURE is a performance art group that spreads awareness for causes we believe in and brings our art form out into the world guerilla style. www.puredance.org http://PURE-Dance.tribe.net

We cross many dance forms and are affiliated with no particular studio....this is an amazing opportunity for us all to join in a unified dance and help our world/community.

Our first meeting of the year will be on March 1 at the Hurst Recreation Center from 8-9pm. All subsequent meetings will be held on the 1st Thursday of the month as well. Please bring $3 to cover room rental and administrative paperwork (making copies).

In July, we will perform in the annual anniversary of PURE's first procession in NYC. All PURE chapters across the world perform on the same day to celebrate the anniversary. We will also be dancing at Kismet this year.

This group is democratic. Brandy and I are your facilitators, but we are here to help you and the group flourish. It's everyone's group and all ideas and input are welcome. At this meeting, we will

- Get your information
- Tell you about PURE
- Set date, time, and place for anniversary processional.
- Set date, time, and place for Kismet.
- Pick charities, events, or causes to spread awareness
- DANCE and DRUM!

If you have someone who doesn't wish to perform but would like to help, we also have assistant positions. These wonderful people join us at our procession and help us in many ways.

Belly Dancer on "Flavor of Love"

I hate to admit this, but sometimes I watch this ghetto fab show starring Flavor Flav . It is like "The Bachelor" but super ghetto. However I did see a belly dancer on one of the episodes this season . She was the only thing that was not cheesy. Did anyone see it and knows this dancer's name? That is just proof that it is possible to make a guest apperance on a cheesy show without being sleazy or cheesy.

You asked for it and now its back!! NTMEDA’s Holiday Dinner, Show and Silent Auction is back!!!

When: Sunday December 3, 2006
Where: Giovanni’s
18484 Preston Road Suite 119
(just south of George Bush Tollway north of Frankford)
Dallas
Time: 6:00 pm doors open, show at 7:00 pm
Cost: $30 per person

Come see Anahata, Cinnamon, Indigo Rose, Johara Dance Ensemble, Nacheska and Feria, Naima, Raks Halim, Visions in Dance, Rivkah, Tatika and many more perform during a delicious buffet dinner consisting of both Persian and Italian cuisines!

Student Night!!!

Hello Everyone!
I was thinking of getting some of my students together to go see one of your shows! Do you have a certain time and date in the next month that you recommend, maybe a night that you're planning something extra special, or even a show time that's better to come to than the others (audience energy-wise)?! Also, should I make reservations if it's more than a certain number of people?

Cirque at Al Amir

Fannie, the french lady that used to perform at Amir is back. She used to do an act with 46 Hula Hoops in the french circus style. She made it look so elegant and sexy. She has a new act now I am not sure what it is yet. But they have fabric tied to the ceiling in Al Amir II. They (the staff) said she came to rehearse and climbed to the top and hung upside down! I can't wait to see her show!

Live Arabic Band at Al Amir

Laylai will be playing at Al Amir II on Friday September 8! This is the same band that plays for Little Egypt's seminar shows. We will have Saide Monawar on keyboard Hussam Said on quitar Saher El Tawil on drums (he is a second generation drummer and he is awesome). Hussam Abdallah will be signing. They are fantastic musicians and will have you dancing all night. There is no cover charge! Just come have a cocktail or an appeitizer or dessert if you don't want to make it a "big" night out $.

Just wanted to let everyone know that the Friday night show at Hedary's with Ansuya is selling out, so if you planned on going, you might want to go ahead and get your tickets. It doesn't look like there will be any seats for sale at the door.

Our own TH has been invited to perform for IAMED in November!!! How exciting is that? I'm so proud!! Our girl is gonna be famous!!! And since she's so level headed, she'll never forget us when she becomes a great big shining star! Oh wait, she's already a big shining star! Ok, so when her shining star gets to be seen by the WORLD!

NTMEDA needs YOUR help with the Holiday Party!

NTMEDA needs your help planning the dancing at our annual Holiday Event! We are looking for suggestions of NTMEDA members (or people who would be interested in becoming members) to dance at our annual holiday event in December!

Please let me know your suggestions on not only soloists but also troupes to perform at our event. Our goal is to showcase the best and brightest of the Dallas/Fort Worth talent pool to make a great evening of food, dancing and friendship.

Ya Halla Saturday Show

Wow! Ya Halla was smok'in Saturday night. Congratulations to Morroco for her Life Time Achievement Award. ALL the dancers were superb. Azziza, aflame in that georgeous tangerine sizzled the stage...Rachael 'positively boneless' Brice mezmerized us all with her seamless fluidity...Veena (or was it Meena?) with Hindi-Oriental numbers were also a hit with the audience. Amir and Tarik had all the right moves and then some! Too many stars to name all. Great troupe choreographies. Isis got Harry Saroyan on the cell phone so the whole audience could participate in a get well, we miss you call. 4+ hours of shows! To top it off, My favorite 2 drummers, Issam and Susu rocked the house with their solos and their Call and Response duet. Took all day drum seminars with Issam. He is a great instructor and we always have fun. I can't wait for tomorrow. All day Drum with Susu. Not only is she a phenominal drummer, she is so personable and open.

Did I misunderstand? (cross post)

I went for an interview today at a new cafe/hookah lounge called Narah Cafe in Dalworthington Gardens. I went in with the mind set of 1 dancer 1 show $100.00, or 1 dancer 2 shows $150.00, after all the hoopla about my price negotiations at Kan Zaman. The owner informed me before we talked money that what he wanted was 2 dancers 2 shows...no stage, just around the tables. So I re-thought my pricing. I wanted to make it affordable to him being a new business, but fair to the dancers. So I told him 2 dancers, 1 show, $75.00 a piece, or 2 dancers, 2 shows $100.00 a piece. He didn't like that, so he asked how much for 1 dancer one show....my bottom price. With a sigh, I said, $75.00. He said he was thinking more along the lines of $35.00. I told him I couldn't get anyone to come out there for $35.00. Then he told me that he actually had talked to some dancer who said she would come out there for less than $35.00. I don't know if that was a negotiation tactic or not, but I wanted to stay true to what was posted in the past about raising the pay scale. Are we all on board with this?

Full Skirts vs Fitted

We are encourged to wear full skirts (chiffon) and a bra/ belt set when we perform. I love it because I prefer that style. Alot of the costumes coming out of Egypt have alot less beadwork and flash than they have in the past. I agree with the owner about them not being flashy enough for nightclubs. What do you think?

Egyptian Workshop in Early November

Hi all,
I just wanted to get a feel for an interest in this. I am think of sponsoring Katia of Boston to come here in early November. She has fantastic, unique, Egyptian Style dance. I study with her often, been to her retreat in Boston, workshops in various places in the US, and went to Egypt in March with her as well. She has been dancing for over 30 years and has gone to Egypt at least once every year since 1980! Just a plethera of knowledge and expereince!

The weekend will consist of a 2 day workshop (Sat. & Sun.) and Saturday night show. With a reasonable price range for the full 2-day workshops being about $125-$140 range.
I don't have the full details yet as I want to make sure there is an interest out there! ;-)

Welcome to the Al Amir Dancers tribe! I created this tribe help us establish a base for communication with the greater Dallas dance community. One of the downsides of being a professional dancer is not being able to attend community events because of work. Much of the Metroplex belly dance community is on tribe, so I felt this would be a great place to build a hub for Al Amir dancers to communicate AA events to the greater bellydance community; which will hopefully build up to more community attendance for venues such as Al Amir, and lead to greater support (emotional and financial) for all the dancers who work professionally in restaurants and clubs in the D/FW area.

Please introduce yourselves as you join, and feel free to give your feedback in this forum. I'm interested to know what the greater community thinks about our professional venues in general, and Al Amir in particular.
