She is grateful to have been mentored by Sarita Mileta (Vancouver), Rahma Haddad (Vancouver), and Badia Star (Toronto). As a strong believer in lifelong learning, she continues to study in workshops with renowned bellydance instructors around the world.
About LOTUS ROAD

The LOTUS flower is an emblem that connects East and West. It is seen all through and beyond the Silk ROAD, covering the vast regions from the Far East to North Africa. Across different cultures, it symbolizes enlightenment (non-attachment), fertility, and beauty. Notably, the LOTUS is the flower representing Lakshmi, the Hindu Goddess of wealth, prosperity, light, wisdom, fortune, fertility, generosity and courage. She is the embodiment of beauty, grace and charm. She is the quintessential WOMAN.

LOTUS ROAD DANCE is a place where people from all ROADS (paths) are welcome and take on a common ROAD (journey) through dance. Dance, along with music, is the universal language of expression.

Mission:
Embracing tradition and modernity, and unbound in convention, age, shape, or ethnicity... Raks Sharki (bellydance) is for everyone. Your rich life experiences speak through movement. Whether your plans are to just dance for yourself, for your friends, to have fun at a club, or to spread your wings at center stage... free your soul and let your creativity soar. It's not just dance. It's a community - a place to nurture the body and mind. The only things that bind us are crystals, sequins, shiny coins, fringe, and anything pretty and shiny. Raks rocks!
BEGINNER I AND II SUMMER INTENSIVE
Dancing with the Veil

July 5 - Aug 30 (8 sessions - no class Aug 2 during BC Day Long Weekend)
Sundays, 10 am - 12 pm*
Cost: $140, $16 drop-in. Drop-ins are not encouraged for absolute beginners.
Please note that each session is a two-hour intensive class, instead of a regular 1.5 hour class.

Dancing with the veil is an important element in oriental style bellydance. Along with the finger cymbals, it is one of the most important and commonly used dance props. It is an excellent learning tool to work the arms and further develop grace, and to capture the powerfully feminine yet ethereal essence of oriental dance. Learn to use the veil to frame the body, accentuate moves, and create beautiful effects. Learn the difference between different fabrics, and how they create different effects and feelings. Limited number of veils will be provided.

Class breakdown - 1 hour warm-up and basic technique, 1 hour of combination and veil work.

INTRO TO THE ART OF DRUM SOLO, with LIVE DRUMMER
Aug 5 - Aug 26 (4 sessions)
Wednesdays, 7 pm - 8 pm
Cost: $80, including drummer and materials

Experience the magic of dancing to live drum. Learn improvisational cues, musicality, and work your hard-learned isolations and staccato movements in context! Some combinations are introduced, but improvisation is highly encouraged in a very supportive environment. Class is suitable for students with some background in dance and basic isolation knowledge.

INTRO TO FULL ROUTINE MUSIC COMPREHENSION
Aug 5 - Aug 26 (4 sessions)
Wednesdays, 8 pm - 9 pm
Cost: $60, including materials

You learned the moves in class, but how do you use them? This class breaks down musical structures used in full bellydance shows. Understand entrance, taxim, drum solo, floor work, and finale. Explore different music and understand when and how to come in and how to improvise. Suitable for students in Beginner II and up.

Internationally renowned belly dance company The Indigo have charmed the hearts of princes and tramps alike, while The Crow Quill Night Owls and The Gallus Brothers have seduced the tympanums of thousands with their arresting interpretations of old timey country blues, jazz and pop. Sometimes enchanting, sometimes macabre, often raucous, but always delightful, this outfit breathes new life into the movement and spectacle of a bygone era in their new knockdown revue.

Current confirmed show details are as follows:

May 7 Sirens Port Townsend WA
May 8 Night Light Lounge Bellingham WA
May 10 Historical Armory Ashland OR
May 14 Broadway Studios San Francisco CA
May 17 Tribal Fest Sebastopol CA
May 20 Tractor Tavern Seattle WA
May 21 The Aladdin Theater Portland OR
May 23 Northwest Folk Life Festival Seattle WA
Please visit www.theindigo.net for more information.

Since the Indigo's inception in 2003, the company and its members have been seen throughout the Americas, Europe, Asia and Australia. The Indigo has toured extensively with The Bellydance Superstars, Lollapalooza, The Yard Dogs Road Show, and has performed at a number of festivals including the prestigious Glastonbury Festival. The Indigo has created and defined a new style of belly dance, embracing the roots of middle eastern dance while incorporating an aesthetic reminiscent of early twentieth century cabarets and world's fairs.

The Crow Quill Night Owls are submerged in the depths of old medicine show music like a serpent eating it's own tale,
playing a mix of 1920's jazz, jug band music, ragtime country blues, and minstrel songs gone feral.
Kit "Stymee" Stovepipe sings like the surface noise of an old 78 rpm record and picks a resophonic guitar like a broke down engine on rusty zig-zag tracks. while Windy City Alex shreds the tenor banjo and sings with a voice like piano notes gliding through the spokes of and old bicycle. The band is composed of part old instruments and part old junk, including tub bass, washboard, National steel guitar, banjo harmonicas and kazoos. They've indulged audiences all over the West Coast, from big concert hall to dusty street corner, playing the obscure songs of a forgotten America that sets people's toes to tappin'.

The Gallus Brothers play rollicking good country blues peppered with old rags, pre-war pop songs and dance tunes. Devin Champlin syncopates wildly on a reso-phonic guitar, while Lucas Hicks brings the music to a new level by playing percussion on a suitcase full of bones, bells, and antique tomfoolery. They have played up and down the west coast from festival stage to smoky bar, wooing crowds with their music, their humor, and their willingness to jump on a table, stand on eachother, and juggle while playing a good old tune from way back when.
I hope you all are keeping warm!

Just wanted to send out a little reminder that on January 9th and 10th, Ala Nar presents the wonderful and amazinf Tamalyn Dallal for a masters workshop and documentary screening.

Sadly the workshop is full (sold out in a matter of days!), but tickets are still available for the screening. Tamalyn will also be selling and signing her book about her travels through Indonesia, Egypt, Zanzibar, Jordan, and Xinjiang. The documentary that she will be showing is a companion to her book, which I highly recommend for dancers and non-dancers a like. Definitely an event that should not be missed. There will also be snacks and a little after-party.
We recently released a debut album. It's a mix of electronic and arabian styles. We're hoping it might appeal to the tribal and belly dance community. Please feel free to have a listen on myspace where we have four full tracks available to listen online.
http://www.myspace.com/nomadiqa

It would also be great to promote it through the network of tribal and/or belly dance teachers who might be interested to sell it at a class or bazaar. We can offer it at wholesale prices with plenty of capacity for the seller to make a decent profit on top of the wholesale price.

Please contact info@nomadiqa.com for further details. Sorry for the self promotion.

As the country has a reputation for funky dress I was expecting unusual outfits (and was constantly stimulated with interesting get up), but have come away hugely impressed – some of he clothes are out there but they work (yes there is an almost genius order to the chaos), the costumes are totally fun – I loved the Harajuku girls! (thanks Maki I followed all your recommendations) and of course the beautiful kimono from the more casual styles to the wedding kimono which we were lucky enough to see while strolling through a traditional Japanese garden. Of course I did a little shopping of my own and was delighted to find shirt sleeves that fit the length of my arms and torso! I just wish I had some skill with a needle and thread (and um scissors) to come up with something using the beautiful fabric available.

It has been a long time since I laughed so hard I cried. And then didn't stop for an hour and a half. It was brilliant. Everything one would expect from a Monty Python show - all the old standard songs and sketches, from the African Swallows to the Black Knight and Tim and the killer bunny. The new bits were just as brilliant - the Lady of the Lake was the star of the show, and The Song That Goes Like This was beyond hysterical.

The best part was the confetti cannons that covered the entire audience at the end of the "Bright Side of Life" finale. You just can't go wrong with confetti cannons. Always remember - You've got to Find your Grail.
We rehearse in a space with one mirror, and often use the mirror (of course) to make sure we're all in synch, using the same arms, etc. etc. We've been working on a new piece and decided that we should probably not use the mirror because we'll be performing it several times over the next few weeks and we shouldn't be reliant on the mirror.

It was AMAZING! No mirror forced us to use our "energy" to find each other, to focus on the music and of course, remember the choreo. Iva and I had goosebumps it was so cool!

But I'm stagnant. Ala Nar is rockin' along, but somehow I feel I'm sort of losing an edge somewhere. I honestly can't remember the last time something just ripped into my heart and soul and captivated me.

Do I just ride it out? Will spring bring new things? I am REALLY looking forward to Jim Boz in May, and Lynette and Leah's workshop in March. I'd love to be taking classes but I'm teaching, I work full time and I'm in school, so I just don't have the time. The classes I want to take are all on days that I teach, or times that can't fit my schedule.

What do you all do? Where is everyone (I don't mean just Ala Nar - I mean ya'll!) at right now? February blahs? Will I get inspired as the Canucks make their way to the playoffs? As the sun comes out? When I can wear skirts and tanktops and sandals again? Do I need a new costume?? (oooh-maybe thats it....)

Please share!

Window smashed and whole suitcase taken... Fuck me... The police feel that it was a targeted attack, meaning someone knew what was in that case and wanted it.

I just want it back if anyone knows where it is, who has it - PLEASE return it to me and I'll ask no questions. It's taken me years to collect all this stuff, most of it was purchased for specific reasons at specific times in my dance and regular life.
CHANGES to Skye's Winter Hafla '07

Hello Everyone,

Well, it's one week from showtime and some unforseen issues have cropped up. Fortunately I have a plan B which may be even better than plan A anyhow! So, here's the long and short of it...

Things have changed slightly. The Aldergrove Kinsman Community Centre made some serious errors in their booking of our event on the Saturday Night, and now they are charging me just under $1000 to rent the space which I have to pay out of pocket, in full, by Monday. They never actually booked the hall (despite my numerous confirmations), and now in order to have any space at all this is what it is going to take... not to mention that the time of our performace wont be able to start until 8pm. So I have had to make alternate arrangements... as follows:

The Student night will now be on SUNDAY, MARCH 25, 2007 in LANGLEY. It will now be held at BELUGA BAR & GRILL: 21671 Fraser Hwy, Langley, BC, V3A 4H1. The phone number is 604-533-7223. This means we are no longer doing a Potluck, nor is there a ticket charge!! (YAY!!) Just come and enjoy the great food this fabulous venue has on their menu. (The food there is awesome and the prices are VERY resonable!! On Sundays, all their weekly specials apply, so most things are several bucks off, too!) The show will NOW START at 7PM and be done when it's over (no more than 2 hours I should imagine) and if you'd like to hang out and mingle or dance some more you are welcome to do so. It won't be a super late night for those working the next morning... by 9 or 10pm you will be free to venture home! Also, you will still be able to bring all your guests... BUT PLEASE CONTACT ME THIS WEEK WITH YOUR FINAL NUMBERS!!!! THE RESTAURANT NEEDS TO KNOW!

I am so sorry to have to alter these arrangements, but it was NOT in my control and I am not prepared to charge anyone more, nor was I prepared to pay such an outrageous fee for a 2-3 hour event! I think this will work out better for everyone as now you don't have to prepare any food yourselves, nor do you have to pay for tickets! Just come and enjoy a night out with some fabulous dancing and delicious food prepared just for you!

PLEASE, plan to be at the restaurant by 6:30pm so we can start on time (and you can order food...). Any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to email me back or call me. Thanks for understanding! It's gonna rock - this venue is wondeful and I think you will all love it!

Thanks Ladies!!

Skye

Hi everyone, we are very excited to finally announce that our website has lots of new stuff! First off (since many of you have asked) our shopping page is up! On the main menu this can be found under the "Inside Harem" tab. Under this tab is also a way for you to join our mailing list, and be kept up to date on Harem events, as well as other big local events - that means that yes, we will be listing other local events, so if you want to have your events added, let us know and we can try to post them in a timely manner (right now this only has HAREM events, but give us a couple of days and it will have local stuff).

We also have a guestbook now, so if you have anything you want people to know about us, post it there (of course if you say bad stuff about us -well we might cry but we won't publish it so don't bother!! ) And also.... I'm very excited to announce that we will be having a "Recipe of the Month" also! The first of the series will be up in a couple of days, and this page will feature Middle Eastern and Mediterranean recipes (of course, bellydancing is not just dance, it is about culture, and a huge part of the culture of the Middle East is FOOD! )

We have added a Hire Harem tab, under which you can find the different kinds of props and shows HAREM offers (stay tuned for more pics to be added to this in the next couple of weeks also). Our FAQ page will also be up shortly, and will feature all you need to know about hiring a dancer, and as performers, this might be handy for those of you who are not sure which questions to ask, or what info might be relevant when you are heading out for gigs. Our Hire Us form also asks all the questions you should know so that you are totally prepared when you walk into a party to dance.

We have many more plans for the site, so stay tuned!!! Please feel free to roam through the site and let us know what you think!
