The ticketing process sure went smoothly this year -for the first time, in my experience.
Tickets for the 2008 Nevada playa event became available at 9am this morning (Alaska time) and after just a few minutes of waiting in queue --during which I knew how far back in the queue I was with updated adjustments coming every 60 seconds-- the ticket screen popped up. A couple minutes later the confo e-mail had arrived in my inbox. Quick, smooth and easy this year including the welcome option of giving to the Black Rock Arts Foundation artist grant fund.
Who else is planning on going down from Alaska for this year's Burn?

Re: Burning Man 2008 - Tickets & Plans
Tue, January 22, 2008 - 11:54 AMI bought a ticket Wednesday morning with the mass of 20,000 people hitting the "buy tickets now" button. It was a smooth process this year - no complaints. the cue is nice so you can check back and see where you are in line and how quickly you need to get your payment information together.
Chris and I are definitly going this year. We have event tickets. Now we need airfare. Big things first and the rest falls into place. Found the most awsome goggles for this year for dust storms so we are excited to give them a go!

Re: Burning Man 2008 - Tickets & Plans
Tue, January 22, 2008 - 1:41 PMNot this year for us... too many other plans and I dropped close to $10,000 on our trip to BRC last year!! Ouch.
Besides, I'm boycotting this year's theme ; )
Maybe next year... -

$10k?!? Holy! Did you do an art installation, buy an RV (we have thought about doing so, versus renting the CruiseAmerica barges every year) ...or did the one of the casinos on the way to or from the playa pull you in with a tractor beam?
Harrah's zapped us with a tractor beam on the way from BRC last year, nearing Reno at about 9pm and just as exhausted and begrimed as could be after taking down both the Big Round Cubatron art installation and two camps. Endless hot showers were welcomed. I think everyone escaped unscathed from the slot machines the next day, thanks mainly to a remarkable buffet breakfast and noon flights for all the 20-somethings. We did manage (finally after several years of intending to go) to see the National Automobile Museum just a block from Harrah's. An easy walk across the river bridge vfrom Harrah's to the car museum. Wonderful place! Fascinating old cars from the earliest steam-powered wagons to Grapes-Of-Wrath-mobiles to outrageous '50's-era Hollywood glamour boats. Well worth the time to schedule in a couple hours to half a day for if in Reno. -

Re: Burning Man 2008 - Tickets & Plans
Tue, January 22, 2008 - 4:08 PMThe Cubatron was born in Alaska!? I love that thing.
But yeah - $10k goes fast when you add up tickets, food, tarps, alcohol, rebar, tools, fuel (I drove down and back in my diesel F250), and I basically provided all of our camp infrastructure - generator, fuel, showers, etc, etc. I also dropped about $1000+ into a sculpture project that only made it to half completion on the playa by the end of the week! (see one of my photos of our camp with the dome and rainbow). It was fun, but I won't be doing it at the price-tag again anytime soon - it's WAY too expensive to do all that work for 1 week of play time. At least, on my income! If I were wealthy, well, that'd be another thing altogether - I'd probably drop $20k+ on making a full scale sound camp if I had that kinda dough!
Hopefully I'll have a better functioning version of the sculpture I was working on for the festival in July up here...it's a steel tree with big lexan lotuses that are opaqued for an LCD projector that shoots crazy image collages into it - at night it looks amazing. It's like being on LSD without the LSD.

Re: Burning Man 2008 - Tickets & Plans
Fri, January 25, 2008 - 7:31 AMSeemed to cost me about 1500-2000 to go for the week, when I lived nearby in the Bay Area. Of course I was paying everything for the both of us to go. This year I would like to spend less. Thinking of just going low profile with a tent and simple sun shade, but have a hard time imagining spending less then 1200 even if I'm in the area. I wonder how all those 20 somethings manage to fund their trip.

The Cubatron and Big Round Cubatron are born of Mark Lottor's genius in Palo Alto, CA. As a service project our Alaska crew simply assists him to build, maintain, and then take down these magnificent dynamic light sculptures.

If 'yal make it in to Anchorage this afternoon then please do find other Alaska Burners and Burners-to-be gathering at the sculpture of the sun located behind the Performing Arts Center downtown, at 5:30pm, for the First Friday art walkabout. We will be looking at the ice sculptures on the other side of the PAC and strolling around downtown together. -

Re: Burning Man 2008 - Tickets & Plans
Thu, March 20, 2008 - 5:57 PMHey there,
My husband chris and I (Holly) will be going to BM this year and are fairly new to Alaska. We would love to be involved in a alaska community project and get to the others in the community. We are affiliated with the camp Bat Country and will do what we can from here to contribute to projects with other bat friends, but still have the desire to contribute to a project that represents our local. Your ideas sound great and we are eager to learn more and share ours.
Holly
