Holos 2009 was a complete success!

Everyone who came (around 90 people or so) enjoyed a very pleasant experience at the Trapper Creek Holos Festival this weekend. While Anchorage was getting dumped on with rain we were all warm and dry around the campfire (not a drop of rain fell up there) roasting hotdogs, marshmallows, and having a great time.

The participants ranged from a really cool 'ol Senior Citizen Burner couple who made delicious pancakes for everyone in the morning to about ten of us in our 40's and 50's (including veteran Burners from such excellent camp lineages as Black Rock City Post Office, Barbie Death Camp, and Barbershop Roulette -among others) to dozens of young folks in their 20's and 30's who were energetically dancing, spinning fire, rolling around on huge cable spools, swimming in the creek, walking in the woods, and so on. There were even some teens (the youngest I spoke with was 14) -and perhaps some 'lil kids, too, but if so they were running around over in the Family Camp area and I did not see them. There were at least three people from overseas, two from the East Coast, and the rest were Alaskans.

Art and activities included ice-carving (wonderful fun, that!), drawing and coloring (as on the Holos postcards available for mailing out), fabulous costumery and colorful face-painting, dancing under UV to the sound-stage's music and streaming video, and gifting. Gifts there were in abundance, from nifty Holos 2009 patches, stickers, and handmade necklaces to postcards, calenders and all sorts of other great schwag. My favorites, though, were the delicious food and beverages folks so kindly brought around and gifted to others. Probably the best burrito I have ever tasted, piping hot from the pan! Conversation while sharing chow was my favorite part of the event, noshing while getting to know new friends.

As it turned out there was a big Man who folks constructed of a bazillion teensy branches woven together, dramatically ignited Saturday night into a whoosh of brilliant flame by a fire-spinner fellow cracking it with a flaming whip. He and another fire-spinner performed an amazingly graceful ballet of sorts to the music from the sound-stage while fire-spinning. I have seen dozens if not hundreds of fire-spinning performances over the years but never before have I beheld such grace and art in motion as this one fellow. It was really something, "awesome" in the real sense of the overused word; one of those "I will remember this for the rest of my life" moments. He touched true greatness in that particular performance; I wonder if I shall ever see its match again.

The gleaming ice sculpture (of two big twisting flames, appropriately enough) adorned Center Camp all day Saturday, then that night had a second incarnation as illuminated art when moved (atop a stump) into the center of the biggest firepit with logs placed around it. While the drumming circle made music --and then for a couple hours afterwards as people chatted with one another seated around the fire-- the sculpture caught the flames leaping around it, refracting golden liquid light beautifully while it sublimed and melted away. The Holos website http://holosfestival.com/?page_id=134 has a video up and running which was recorded early on Saturday (before most people arrived, but you can see what the central area looks like in it) and there are photos posted; about 100 photos I shot at Holos will eventually be up for sharing (so please keep checking back to see what new images from me and others have been added).

Thanks to the Temple of Mosquito repellent (a net mesh tent containing an altar upon which were available sacred vials of every mosquito repellent in the world, all free for the use of everyone) the bugs were a non-issue, though I did have fun electrocuting them into a crackle and snap of sound accompanied by a blue spark by using a magical paddle which looks like a badminton racket. Great fun, that, for the mosquito-averse and slightly crazed! The camping was easy and pleasant, art/activities/chow/scenery delightful, and the company even better.

Doran and I are looking forward to returning next year (the last weekend in June is when Holos is held) and to getting together throughout the year between now and then for meals and more conversation with all the new friends we met last weekend!

A big "Thank you!" to our Burning Man regional rep, Daisy, as well as to DJ Jack, Chris, and so many others who made this first Holos so excellent!

Alaska Burning Man is on for this weekend!

Our regional Burning Man prep, Melanie, is swamped with making all the last minute arrangements so asked me to put together this update post for everyone.

Yes, the first-ever official Burning Man Organization-sanctioned regional event in Alaska is on for this weekend, 27-28JUN!

The general overview and philosophy of the event is posted at http://holosfestival.com/

Directions to Holos:
Trip takes about 2.5 hours from Anchorage Airport. Go North out of Anchorage, through Wasilla, and to mile 114.5 on the Parks Highway. Turn Right onto Suisitna River Road (to the left is Petersville Road-there are clear signs for that) at 1.7 miles in you will turn right onto Bradley Road and follow the road to the end - it will dead end at Boots Bison Ranch and the Holos event. Some landmarks are: at 4.2 miles in from Parks Highway there is a curve to the right and a big clearing, At mile 5 in from Parks Hwy the is a one lane bridge - after that you go up the hill and curve a little to the right and then to the left we will be straight ahead to the left after the barn and the big field, you can't miss it.

Yes, the event is definitely kid-friendly. (Several families I know of are pondering going and are basically just waiting for someone else with kids to say "Yes, we are going" before they jump in as well). There will be at least three teens there I know of, and if the families with rugrats come then a bunch 'o lil ones too.

Tickets purchased before the event are $20 each for adults and teens, kids 12 and under are half price, and lil teensy squirts 'n babes in arms are free. Tickets purchased out at the event itself are $30 each each for adults and teens, kids 12 and under are half price, and lil teensy squirts 'n babes in arms are still free. So far there are folks from Fairbanks and Anchorage as well as out of state (all the way from the east coast!) who have purchased tickets and are coming. The cost of the tickets is mainly covering the required event insurance, some printing costs & materials, and (if we come out in the black rather than the red) rental of a storage unit into which to place gear for next year's event. All the labor is entirely unpaid volunteer; nobody is making a dime for themself from this nonprofit regional community event. Please see the Holos website for the two remaining places and times to make advance ticket purchases from Melanie; I also have five as-yet unsold tickets remaining in my envelope if you want to contact me for those.

Volunteers took up a donated load of firewood in a pickup truck this weekend, if you can bring some extra firewood along with you as well when you come on the 27th then that would be great; there will definitely be a central campfire in a firepit. Depending on rain and forest conditions there may or may not be fires allowed for individual firepits in the camping areas. Please, no fireworks. A band (Snack Pharm) says they are coming to play on the rustic stage nearby the central firepit; a DJ will be playing some goa and house music as well. The Anchorage Shamanic Drumming Circle tribe is gathering at the event, so please bring a 5 gal plastic bucket, cowbell, or something else to beat on if you want to join in the drumming. Greate Arte is planned. Several theme camps with zany fun galore are planned and folks are bringing nifty gifts and services for giving to others as well. Please remember to bring your food, water, bug repellent, and shelter for the event and a couple plastic trash bags in which to take out _all_ your trash at the conclusion; remember, one of the Ten Principles of Burning Man is "Leave no trace" -all ten are listed at the Holos website. The climax of the event is planned for 2pm on Sunday afternoon with camp clean-ups and general exodus to follow at leisure after that time.

Those who attend this first Burning Man event in Alaska shall not only enjoy a great time in the moment but also will have glorious bragging rights forevermore. As (with apologies to Shakespeare) King Henry V said:

This day is call'd the feast of Holos.
S/he that outlives this day, and comes safe home,
Will stand a tip-toe when this day is nam'd,
And rouse him/herself at the name of Holos.
S/he that shall live this day, and see old age,
Will yearly on the vigil feast his/her neighbours,
And say 'To-morrow is Holos.'
Then will he strip his sleeve and show his/her tattoos,
And say 'These I had on that first Holos day.'
Old men forget; yet all shall be forgot,
But s/he'll remember, with advantages,
What feats s/he did that day. Then shall our names,
Familiar in his/her mouth as household words-
Harry the King, Raul and Funky Duck,
Stevendalf and Dorandalf, Daisy and TomTom-
Be in their flowing cups freshly rememb'red.
This story shall the good parent teach his/her child;
And Holos shall ne'er go by in Alaska,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered-
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers 'n sisters 'n freaks in general;
For s/he to-day that parties with me Burning Man style
Shall be my bro, be s/he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his/her condition;
And nobles in England, Anchorage, and Fairbanks now-a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not there at Holos,
And hold their manhoods, tatas, and other parts cheap whiles any speaks
That reveled with us upon that first Holos day!

Burn on!

We are actually having a regional burn for BurningMan in Alaska.

HOLOS will take place in Trapper Creek on the weekend of June 27-28th.

Tickets will cost you 20 bucks if you buy them early or $30 if you wait till you get there.

The Event will uphold all 10 of the BurningMan principals: Radical Inclusion, Gifting, Decommodification, Radical Self Reliance, Radical Self Expression, Communal Effort, Civic Responsibility, Leaving No Trace, Participation, and Immediacy. For definitions on each of these pricipals and more information on the event go to www.holosfestival.com
Hi folks-

Our former moderator is now off in the Lower 48 doing other things so we need to choose a new one. If we can draft her into doing so, then I think our Alaska Regional Rep, Melanie, would be a great moderator for this tribe.

Hey y'all AK friends and family...I've been on the playa now for a week and I want to let you all know to bring those goggles (and extras) and lots of bandanas or dust masks - it is WINDY and dusty and the playa is so broken up and lumpy that it is just flying everywhere. Bikes may not even serve you this year since it is so bad. We had a dust storm roll in last night about 9pm and it has basically been off and on since and shows no signs of letting up.

But don't let that deter you - this year's temple is going to be mind blowing!

Reminders from the Black Rock City Post Office (BRCPO) at Center Camp

Depending on where you are mailing from it is probably about time to send off your cards, letters, and care packages to loved ones in Black Rock City!

When mailing to the playa please address your playa-bound mail as completely as possible in this format to increase the odds of it being received:

CAMPER'S PLAYA NAME or REAL NAME ...or better, both.
CAMP NAME ...and any helpful descriptions of street facade, tents, or large features that might be at this location to help the postie find the addressee
CAMP ADDRESS ...as close as you can get (example: 9:35 and Hummer) &/or nearest cross-street, and even Man-side or mountain-side (if you know)
C/O BRCPO
Burning Man
Gerlach, NV 89412

...and include a return address, just in case.

Please remember no postage stamps are sold at the BRCPO at Center Camp, so bring postage stamps for mailing postcards (postcards from Burning Man are available as gifts at the BRCPO at Center Camp) and letters. If you bring extras for others then your gift of stamps is always appreciated.

For instructions on sending registered and certified mail to BRC or for information on the 2008 Burning Man postmark, gift postcards, and other topics please visit the Black Rock City Post Office at Center Camp website, www.blackrockcitypostoffice.org

Alrighty, I swore I wasn't going but the playa has its hooks in me again as I'm on the Temple team this year.

After we get this regional sorted out I'll be hitting the road south...but, I want us to connect on the playa since it didn't happen much last year.

I propose a potluck/party/freakout/something once we all get there. Where!? When? What? Throw out some ideas.

I may be playing the Root Society dome again this year, if so, I'd love for you all to come out and dance. It was absolutely sick last year.

I'll make sure to register at Playa Info and if you could all do the same that would rock so we know where the AK conclaves are camped out in the city. I can't remember the name of the camp we'll be in but you all should come visit since we're going to have a gigantic dome and 4 quonset huts set up for bars and chill spaces.

Burning Man 2008 - Tickets & Plans

The ticketing process sure went smoothly this year -for the first time, in my experience.

Tickets for the 2008 Nevada playa event became available at 9am this morning (Alaska time) and after just a few minutes of waiting in queue --during which I knew how far back in the queue I was with updated adjustments coming every 60 seconds-- the ticket screen popped up. A couple minutes later the confo e-mail had arrived in my inbox. Quick, smooth and easy this year including the welcome option of giving to the Black Rock Arts Foundation artist grant fund.

Who else is planning on going down from Alaska for this year's Burn?

It looks like my predicament has been avoided since we've decided to move the date up to july 5th and 6th. it's gonna be a mad couple months but I think we'll pull it off just fine!

Hey all - I'm coming down Monday April 7th let's shoot for 7:30pm at Darwin's Theory and we can go elsewhere from there if we need more space if enough people show up.

If this time is totally a no go for most of us let me know soon and we can have Tuesday the 8th be an option (or second meeting if you can't meet Monday and get caught up on everything)!
Spring fever and approaching festival organizing time!!!

Alrighty fellow AK burners, freaks, and super-humans.

It is time to start planning and getting this show on the road. If we don't figure out the who/what/when/how of it soon it's not gonna happen by July!

So...here's what is happening...

I've got a tenative location recommended back in January. I'm waiting to confirm it but it is probably a pretty good bet. It's home to other events of similar styling - it's in Trapper Creek/Talkeetna area.

I'm contacting people about a sound system since my plans for purchasing one have been delayed.

I need to know who can help make this happen as volunteers. Mainly we need people to do promotion, security, setup, cleanup, etc.

I've set up a separate tribe that will be specifically for planning notes and other shit: http://tribes.tribe.net/holosfest

If you want to help please contact me soon!

Since spring is getting closer it'll be easier for me to make a trip or few down to Anchorage to meet up with anyone from that area wanting to help out. I think that Anchorage will be an easier area to organize out of since more people live there and many of the resources I'm going to probably need (sound, etc) will come out of ANC. So...let me know if y'all would be interested in setting up a time to meet somewhere (Darwin's Theory or somewhere good you know of) and start planning!

Let's make this happen - Alaska needs a good treatment of the friendly, freaky, and counter-norm. Let's help put the dominant culture on hold for a weekend and invite others to do the same!!

So we need a unique Alaskan festival that is like a co-mingling of Burning Man and Autonomous Mutant Festival.

I tried to get something together in 2007 but not enough time, money, or people to help.

Let's make it happen in 2008!

Possible locations include near Talkeetna, slightly north of Fairbanks, or ???? Scouting encouraged. I'm looking into a possible land purchase near Talkeetna but it might not be ready by this summer if I were to purchase it (needs a road access put in...)

Throw out ideas here. Let's setup a possible date in a month or so that we could all meet in person or have two meetings (Fairbanks and Anchorage) and then pool ideas, resources, and volunteers!

Hello everyone here it is great to see some fellow alaska burners. I am writing you on behalf of a group of alaska burners who are looking to create something big this year in black rock city involving hopefully everyone from alaska that wants to be a part of it. Last year we attend ed burning man in a large group of over 20 Alaskans. Most of us were virgins and we all decided we loved it. We are working on getting as many people together to burn with us this year with an art car as well as a theme camp. At our website we are trying to figure out exactly what to do as we have a few ideas but nothing solid. We want to be ready to submit our questioners at the end of February when it opens.
Remember you do not have to be a member of myspace to view this page and please read our blogs. If you do not want to join myspace and have something to say feel free to email us at the address below. I do not know how regularly I will be on this site.

The myspace address I listed in the title is our home base that we are networking from. We are starting to host monthly burning man preparation potlucks. The first one is tonight in west anchorage sorry for such short notice at 9pm. If you see this and have interest in going please call Scot at 229 5398. For the next one we will be giving plenty of notice and I will post it on here.

Also on a local note I am a concert and festival promoter. We have property in trapper creek available to use for a regional. This is the site for the trapper creek bluegrass festival. If any of you have been there thank you we are happy you came and yes we fixed the road. I am looking for feedback about time frame and any other ideas that you may have about a regional. I know it may not sound like much but I do believe we can get over 100 people to show up for the first year.

Have 'yal heard of Roberts Creek, BC? This cool little community in a scenic and very wet portion of Canada has an annual festival complete with a joint effort at creating a big mandala (with wondrously beautiful results). Kids, pets, everyone seems to have fun with creating the community mandala of the year.

AK Arts Festival coming together...

So the gears are moving...it looks HIGHLY likely that the vision of an Alaska based community arts festival will be coming together!

We haven't found a location yet but I think it's gonna actually happen this time around - we have a couple options and I'm scouting more location possibilities. Our tentative date is the third or fourth weekend of July. Still not sure if this will be a one day/night thing or a full weekend. I'd like to lean towards a campout 3 day 2 night kind of deal.

I'm working with the regional Burning Man coordinator for Alaska and she and I are hoping to pull rabbits out of hats and bring something unique to Alaska that isn't just another bluegrass festival.

My vision is in/organic art installations that enhance or adapt to the landscape of the location we end up with - big fires - hearty and yummy Alaskan grub - and some kick ass music as an aperitif.

Right now my hope is to offer this as a FREE event so I NEED volunteers!

So....if you're in AK (or will be visiting and want to come help us out!) please contact me...

Happy Holidays to all you wonderful burners in Alaska. I wish you all safe travels and good eats.

On the news and events front:

We had a very nice time at Rumrunners a few weeks ago and I would like to continue getting to know everyone interested in the Burning Man Alaska Chapter. Tell your family and friends that are interested to sign up for the announce list for the alaska region from Burningman.com and we can make sure that no one is left out of the loop for future events.

For our next mini-event I would like to make it a monthly meeting to whomever is interested. Burning Man is about many things, including art, so I would like to propose a group of us travel to the First Friday events around town to support the local art community. Come once a year or 12 times, you will be welcomed the same. For the last First Friday of the year we will meet at 7pm next to the Sun behind the Performing Arts Center as that is a great public space as well as a good center location for the art shops downtown. If you have any friends that are showing their art that day then please let me know and we will put it on the list for the night.

Any comments or concerns, please contact me anytime.

Your loyal local Burning Leader

so is there anything worth doing for NYE? We'd consider coming down to Anchorage if we knew of anything going on but as far as I can tell the biggest deal in the entire state is a country-style hoe-down at the Egan center in Los Anchorage...maybe a bunch of Burners should show up in full playa regalia and give them a dose of how we party > )

Comments on the AK Burners meet-&-greet last Saturday evening

Hi-

A shout of "thanks!" to Melanie, the Alaska Regional Rep, for getting the ball rolling via a meet and greet in Anchorage last Saturday evening. The Rumrunners venue was not perfect (especially as regards a belated realization of bar venues excluding the under-21 crowd) but this was noted and future venues will be under-21 inclusive. One nifty idea for get-togethers actively supporting art and artists in Alaska is to set an Alaska Burners cadre meet-point and time(s) for then going on to enjoy the First Friday art events together. Another idea was for an occasional pot-luck gathering (with hopes for holding one before Xmas) and eventually a Burner film fest event at the Bear Tooth cinema pub.

Alaska being so geographically huge, there was discussion about how to include everyone. Some ideas floated were to hold a pre-Burn Compression event halfway between Fairbanks and Anchorage. Another idea is to have Fairbanks, Anchorage, and perhaps even Juneau co-regional-reps coordinating local and statewide activities. It is all good!

If you are not signed onto the Alaska regional announce list and would like to be, this may be accomplished at
http://regionals.burningman.com/us_ak.html

The bunch which showed up at Rumrunners were about as diverse as the community at Burning Man itself. Young folks aplenty, some cool "mature" folks, experienced Burners and prospective virgin Burners alike. All really friendly and fun. Much info and perspective shared about logistics and lore of the playa, including many "priceless moments" stories, as well as discussion of American Dream and all sorts of other stuff. This community knows and enjoys excellent conversation!

Best,
Stevendalf

Annual arts festival in Alaska?

So, I'm going to try and get the ball rolling earlier this time around to make something happen by next summer.

I don't post in here often but some of you probably remember me posting about solstice a while back and wanting to get a regional Burning Man-esque type of event happening in Alaska. I went to the Burn this year and was disappointed with a lot of things about the event and the overwhelming inattention to self-reliance, art, and safety third. So....

I'm trying now to get a group of people together that would be interested in organizing some kind of event in Alaska, that would take place in the summer, that is geared towards those of us a bit more freakish than the mainstream - art, fire, music, all the good stuff - without a $300 ticket and without endless lines of meatheads trying to get into your girlfriend's pants. Of course everyone is invited but a crew of people is necessary to make it actually happen.

I'm not sure of a location yet - I'm still shopping for land but obviously I'd want it to be in a place that is 1) private property (to avoid law enforcement hassles and BLM-style bribing to use public lands), 2) an agreeable location, 3) preferably GU1 zoning or something of the sort that is general use and has nice large cleared areas in the interest of fire performance - we don't want to burn the goddamn state down.

Anyone game?

And who (seriously now) would be interested in helping build a yearly arts festival in Alaska. No more raver camp! I don't mind the DJs and music but when it is 24/7 for a week it kind of distracts from all the cool art and stuff people are torching.

Hello All-

Hope you had a great burn!

For the possible good of the order, here following below is a copy of a message I just replied to over at the 'other' Alaska Burners listserve, on Yahoo Groups.

Anyone else think it would be great to get a permit for one of the parks in Anchorage (or Fairbanks, for the crew up there) and have a potluck or suchlike, share playa photos and stories, and so on sometime fairly soon before the weather goes frigid on us? Most areas hold a Decompression party after the burn; maybe there are enough of us (at least in the Anchorage and maybe Fairbanks regions of Alaska) to pull such off now...?

BTW, who is the Alaska Regional rep and how do we get in contact with her/him, anyone know? I recall someone stepped up to take that on but do not remember who told me or where I saw it.

Best,
Stevendalf

---

Hi Playboise-

Eden, are you the moderator for this Yahoo Groups listserve?

There may not be one. Some occasional spam comes through via this listserve and a couple of Santa rampage pub crawls have been announced here but that is about it. What little actual Burner to and fro I have found for Alaska has been at the Alaskaburners tribe on Tribe.com -there have been a couple efforts toward establishing an Alaska camp on the playa at BRC or doing a potluck or somesuch up here but so far nothing has actually come together as far as I know. You can read the history of the to and fro in msgs at Tribe.com

An excellent burn this year in almost every regard, yes? Colossal art and burns. Starhawk gave a wonderful talk, too, crowned by the appearance of the magnificent double-rainbow. Wonderful.

My crew were on the playa again this year (our sixth burn) with we old folks' RV serving as a camp-away-from-camp and feeding station for five young Alaskans in their early twenties (our son and his crew). While roaming out and about in BRC over around 3:15 and Jungle or thereabouts we spotted two old school buses all gloriously painted up for Woodstock with "Yes, we are from Alaska!" on them and flying the blue and gold Ursa Major flag. Stopped in and said hi to the bunch of twenty-somethings there; apparently about half of them drove down and the other half flew from Alaska and were met in Reno. Looked and seemed like a fun crew, but it was only 1:00pm or 2:00pm when we stopped by their busses and that early in the afternoon they were of course mainly still asleep.

So, that twenty plus our seven plus at least three other Alaskans I know were there in BRC makes at least thirty Alaska Burners on the playa this year. There are doubtless others of whom I am unaware. Together with the Alaska Regional rep (I heard a gal was stepping into that role) that is a fair number.

Best,
Stevendalf

PS: I'll crosspost this note over at Alaskaburners on Tribe.

Should we do a camp together?

Other groups from different regions, sometimes do a camp together. A group back east will load a container and have it dropped at the event. Some groups do a theme camp and are more at the center of the event, not my preference. I like to camp in the quieter area away from the sani-huts. The ring on the very outside get a lot of vehicle traffic and is dustier then the rest of the area.

It makes sense to organize. You need a shade structure that won't blow down in high winds. Tents with rainflys don't provide enough protection. Some kind of galley system is needed. Stove and a way to wash dishes. A shower is almost a must, but they are getting picky about what you do with your graywater. It hard to evaporate off a large quanity of water used by many people. We can prearrange a water truck delivery for during the event and put our greywater in barrels to take out by pickup.

The Alaska Flag contest

I have been discussing this idea of a contest for my fellow alaskan burners, something that taps into our creative side, something that says Burning Man, something that says Alaska. As part of the Regional Group for BRC I have been tasked to create a flag for the Regional Information Center (RIC) at center camp. I have been mulling over ideas and it finally hit me - you do it. And if you do ,you get a free ticket to Burning Man this year.

Really.

Here is the dealy-o...

Submit a jpeg or pdf file of your idea to freezerburner@gmail.com and if you are the lucky one who wins then I will reward you with a ticket to Black Rock City.

rules and guidelines:

You must be an Alaskan - living in Alaska now. The design should be something that is easily duplicated so I can make this flag at home. We are looking at flag dimensions of 4-6 feet tall with a base of 30" tapering to a point. Ultimatly I would like this to be the logo for Alaska Burners and we will have flags for our camps, patches for our bags and stickers for whatever will hold them and anything else we can think of made from this logo.

Deadline is July 31st

Contact Melanie at freezerburner@gmail.com if you have any questions.

Thank you and good luck

I know as burners we like to think big, plan big and throw the kind of parties that people love to talk about. The problem with all that is planning and prep. I propose a light camping trip in the near future that we can use as both planning mission for a larger event and a chance to meet up with other burners. (I've only met three others since I've been back up here.)
I know we are rather spread out in this state but if someone has a favorite camp area I'm open to suggestions. Once we get together, it will build the excitement and momentium to other events.

Well, I didn't manage to get an "official" camp together. As it turns out I'll be camping with friends a block off the esplanade somewhere around center or towards 8 oclock.

However, I plan, 100% to have a camp next year. This spring and summer has been a hellish mess of work and health issues so I've had my mind and time occupied elsewhere.

For this year, we should consider having an Alaska party somewhere on the playa - either in one of our camps or if someone knows of an art car with a sound system or the like. Ideas?

Anyone interested in this plan?

Well, I heard a little info back from BLM and they should have further clarification for me by sometime this next week. The biggest deal I forsee as a problem is if we want to setup a sound system for music - which I would like to do. I'd like there to be the opportunity for bands/DJs/drummers/performers/etc to play.

Unfortunately, I went up scouting in the White Mountains and didn't realize that a large scale wildfire had ripped through there last summer leaving a rather apocalyptic looking waste of the former wilderness.

I haven't sought any sponsorship at this point so the first go at it might be a rather laid back affair - if anyone in here lives in the Fairbanks area and has some kind of pull or ideas please let me know. I realize that at least a little bit of money will be necessary to pull anything off - and I'm not opposed to helping foot the bill - just not sure I can organize a get together if it turns out more than a dozen or so people might show up!

Also - if anyone knows of someone with private acreage that would be willing to host such an event please forward that information to me. I'm more than willing to do clean up, prep, etc.

I really want to make this a reality and start an annual event as an alternative to/extension of other festivals like Burning Man, Shambhala, etc. I know it is short notice to do it this year but if we can at least start small and work up from there it is something!

peace and love

I have wanted to do this for a few years now and hope to get more people involved!

Want to put together a one or two night event in celebration of the Solstice this summer - DJs, dancing, art, food, the whole works. If anyone would like to help organize/sponsor/etc please contact me through Tribe!

Biggest need right now is a place to hold it...anyone have any ideas or know of a remote-ish spot with lots of space and minimal neighbors/sound ordinance issues?

Rig For Sale in Alaska

I'm sure some of you saw this in other tribes, but I thought some AK folks may be looking.

This is a 32’ 1983 Travco built by Foretravel on a Dodge chassis. It has a completely solid fiberglass body so there are no seams and no worries about leaks. She has a rebuilt powerful high performance Dodge 440 with newer adjustable fuel injection system [nice for high altitudes].

This motor home has a pretty cool history. The first owner was a mechanic for Travco/Foretravel and drove around the country doing service and maintenance demonstrations using this motorhome. That is why there are a decent amount of highway miles on the chassis. Also, two out of the three owners were named “Vern,” that doesn’t happen often. The previous owners cared for her meticulously, and it shows. We bought this last October and unfortunately a move out of Alaska forces this sale. [I lost the vote to keep her and we are downsizing].

The furnace worked great through a cold Alaska winter, except for once, when there was carbon/soot on the electronic pilot. We gave it a maintenance service and it worked great for the rest of the winter. The previous owners only took a few summer trips so the furnace was hardly used until we got it, thus the soot build-up.

We only took this on a few trips and it drives great with a lot of power, and good steering with easy handling. She is “overbuilt” with extra anti-sway bars, extra large propane and water tanks. It has generators, ac, and I hooked up an “extend-a-stay” so I could use an external propane tank [included], this way I could take the propane tank in to get filled, rather than having to drive the rv into town…especially nice during bad weather, poor road conditions or while boondocking. We got it when the temps were already below freezing, so we did not use the water/septic system in order to ensure there would be no freezing, cracks, or leaks. Other highlights:

• Full awnings all around - in great shape
• Hydraulic Auto levelers, with controls at pilot seat.
• REAL solid-wood cabinets, all in beautiful shape.
• Front couch/bed combo, captains chairs, rear queen.
• Skirting
• Sure Power electrical system and Onan generator.
• External propane tank hookup
• Cool original upholstery, screens, curtains & window shades
• Interior is in awesome shape. VERY clean.
• Full on-dash tank level indicators; flip a switch for H2o heater & generator.
• External spotlight, PA system.
• Kharmically sound.
• Full bathroom, [toilet, shower/bath, vanity].
• Central vacuum system.
• Lots of storage: double closets, a ton of overhead & low cabinets.
• Storage in kitchen, Living room, and bedroom area.
• An extra roof-top container, basement storage.
• Some not so obvious storage places.
• A lifetime of maintenance records and service/schematic manuals.
• Built-in blender and icemaker [that cranks it out].
• Full kitchen: range, oven, convection; fridge & freezer run on AC or propane
• Roof-top ac and ventilation units, forced air furnace
• Rubber and brakes in very good shape
• Front and rear speakers, new cd player, classic 8-track, CB’s,
• Lots of spare parts, belts, hoses, brakes, books, etc.

There is a huge following for these motor homes, and she definitely has style and personality. It is located in Alaska, and is ready for the Alcan Highway [or BRC] if you are not from here. Take the ferry up and drive her down. We have put money, maintenance and improvements into it, but few miles and the interior is cleaner than when we bought it. This girl is ready for the road. Price = $9500.

Here is a pic link link and I can email more pics if you are seriously into it. Thanks for checking it out!

Well, I'm in the process of trying to figure out the BM07 situation. Some of you all seem to be interested in being there and having some kind of AK representation so I'm thinking about piggy-backing on a friend from Portland's application or putting in one if there is still time to be nearby since they would be more than welcoming in helping us represent Alaska on the playa.

My partner and I are in Northern BC right now about to get home to Fairbanks. I AM planning on doing some kind of Solstice celebration in Fairbanks - let me know if you all would like to help me organize something awesome and original!

Peace,
Joshya

So...deadlines are approaching and I really want to know if any of you want to get involved in an Alaska theme camp? It doesn't have to be big and I don't care if we have a giant art goal in mind - I have a project I'd like to do but can go it alone in the camp if I need.

The question then is... if I reserve a space how many of you would want to camp together and be involved? Seeing how there are only 14 of us in this tribe and I'm not even sure everyone is going this year perhaps a small parcel of playa is a good idea?

If we don't go official do some of you just want to grab some space somewhere and camp together anyway?
