We have all heard of The Olympics. What many people don't know is that there were 3 other Olympic style competitions in Ancient Greece, the Nemean, Isthmian, and Pythian games. This is why the Olympian games only took place once every four years.
Unlike the games of Olympia, not all competitions were based on brute strength and physical sports. In Delphi, the Pythian games were held to honor the God Apollo whom had slain the python of Hera, and made his home there. These games, the Pythian games, were based around art, beauty, poetry and music.
"He is the very embodiment of the Hellenic spirit. Everything that marks off the Greek outlook from that of other peoples, and in particular from the barbarians who surrounded them-beauty of every sort, whether of art, music, poetry or youth, sanity and moderation-are all summed up in Apollo."--W.K. Guthrie, The Greeks and Their Gods
We too, as burners, celebrate art, poetry, music, and beauty in our own special way. I would like to create an annual talent show/competition called the Elixir Games at Alchemy. There will be a few different events with prizes!
What competitions would you like to see? I am thinking, DJ Battle, Beat boxing, poetry, poi, and maybe a body painting competition (during the day)... maybe even a giant game of twister. What would you participate in?
If there's anybody on this list who would like to help, I'd appreciate as much as I can get :) Prize donations are also welcome!
Thank you!

Re: 1st Annual Elixir Games - Artistic Olympics, Burner style
Fri, September 11, 2009 - 11:17 AMI'm still planning on doing something like this, but it's going to be a small deal this year. I sort of just started working on this project, and am kind of busy. But look for the Elixir Games in the next Fundraiser, as it will def. be back. I'm thinking mostly the DJ battle (I still need to figure out a camp that would like to help out with this, as I have no equipment myself). I also still want to do the twister and pictionary, and maybe another game or two that is more audience participatory. Any other game ideas?
There has been more interest than I thought there was going to be. So thanks!

Re: 1st Annual Elixir Games - Artistic Olympics, Burner style
Mon, September 14, 2009 - 8:49 AMalong the lines of Pictionary- an epic game of Line-Draw-Line. That's the one that's sort of a combo of Pictionary and Mad Libs- everyone gets a long strip of paper (that you write or draw on and then pass along, with the previous entries hidden from the next person), and you alternate writing down a phrase and then drawing a sketch of what the phrase written by the person before you said. The next person who gets the paper can only see what you drew or wrote, not what the people before you drew or wrote.
The drawings and phrases get wayyyy off course throughout the game. It sort of rewards people who can't draw well, unlike Exquisite Corpse or other drawing games.

Sat, October 10, 2009 - 7:46 PMSorry for everybody who really wanted this event to happen. I came super close to not coming at all, so I had to scratch it. However, plans are already in the works for next year!
For anybody who is interested in helping out, there is an email group now for next year's planning. Please let me know (message me) if you're interested, and I will send you the link.
