Core Focus Fusion: Belly Dance & Pilates with Freyja: 12-2pm
The focus of this workshop is on moving from the core with strength and grace through combining Pilates and Belly Dance. Pilates is an excellent discipline to incorporate into belly dance practice for many reasons. Not only does it condition the muscles that are necessary to develop a healthy and strong dance posture while deepening body awareness, it is also an excellent way to learn and improve the muscle isolations that are used in the dance. Although we will learn fundamental Pilates exercises and then apply them to various belly dance movements, this unique format isn't about doing Pilates and then drilling belly dance but literally fusing both practices into one. You will develop a true understanding and ability of how to isolate the core muscles that are essential in the dance. By applying the techniques from this workshop, you can expect improved dance posture, cleaner isolations, increased torso flexibility and a better understanding of your core and the role it plays in your dance practice.

Freyja began her study of dance in early childhood. Her dance background includes ballet, jazz, hip hop, ballroom, salsa, club dancing, flamenco, Indonesian and Indian dance. She has developed her own unique style, drawing from many of these sources. Freyja has studied American Cabaret, Turkish and Egyptian styles of belly dance as well as American tribal style, which later led to tribal fusion. She has studied with a long list of teachers, most notably Ansuya, Frederique, Jamila and Suhaila Salimpour. Freyja has taught and performed all over the United States, Canada and Europe. She is credited with excellent technique and musical interpretation, crisp isolations and original innovative choreography. As an instructor, she gives great presentation and breakdown of moves, while emphasizing proper posture and movement in order to prevent injuries and gain muscle strength. She has made an extensive study of anatomy, physiology and body mechanics, and uses this knowledge to help students master the motions and gain the needed strength and flexibility to improve their dance. Freyja's love of therapeutic healing arts led her to obtain her yoga teacher training certification at the acclaimed Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco. She is also certified to teach mat and apparatus Pilates classes by IMX Pilates. Freyja continues to study various movement disciplines and is currently focusing on the Alexander technique and principles of qigong to enhance her own practice and compliment her teaching.

Funk Fusion Bellydance with Cera Byer: 3-5pm
This workshop brings you Hip hop, Pop n' Lock, and Funk flava, with intense, high energy conditioning and choreography. Our warm up will focus on layered isolations including syncopated body rhythms, layering two and three dimensional movements simultaneously, and traveling shimmy layers. Then we'll move on to funk fusion combos that you can use, deconstruct, or use to create your own! Come away challenged, inspired, and with lots to work on at home.
