Lots of focus on quick spins as well, basic exercises for turning techniques, and how to train yourself to stop on a dime, which always looks impressive. Spotting basics, as well as non spotted turns, will be covered, and techniques for using legs and arms to initiate a turn. Let’s make those legs and footsies pretty, shall we?

Core Focus Fusion: Belly Dance & Pilates with Freyja: 12-2pm
The focus of this workshop is on moving from the core with strength and grace through combining Pilates and Belly Dance. Pilates is an excellent discipline to incorporate into belly dance practice for many reasons. Not only does it condition the muscles that are necessary to develop a healthy and strong dance posture while deepening body awareness, it is also an excellent way to learn and improve the muscle isolations that are used in the dance. Although we will learn fundamental Pilates exercises and then apply them to various belly dance movements, this unique format isn't about doing Pilates and then drilling belly dance but literally fusing both practices into one. You will develop a true understanding and ability of how to isolate the core muscles that are essential in the dance. By applying the techniques from this workshop, you can expect improved dance posture, cleaner isolations, increased torso flexibility and a better understanding of your core and the role it plays in your dance practice.

Freyja began her study of dance in early childhood. Her dance background includes ballet, jazz, hip hop, ballroom, salsa, club dancing, flamenco, Indonesian and Indian dance. She has developed her own unique style, drawing from many of these sources. Freyja has studied American Cabaret, Turkish and Egyptian styles of belly dance as well as American tribal style, which later led to tribal fusion. She has studied with a long list of teachers, most notably Ansuya, Frederique, Jamila and Suhaila Salimpour. Freyja has taught and performed all over the United States, Canada and Europe. She is credited with excellent technique and musical interpretation, crisp isolations and original innovative choreography. As an instructor, she gives great presentation and breakdown of moves, while emphasizing proper posture and movement in order to prevent injuries and gain muscle strength. She has made an extensive study of anatomy, physiology and body mechanics, and uses this knowledge to help students master the motions and gain the needed strength and flexibility to improve their dance. Freyja's love of therapeutic healing arts led her to obtain her yoga teacher training certification at the acclaimed Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco. She is also certified to teach mat and apparatus Pilates classes by IMX Pilates. Freyja continues to study various movement disciplines and is currently focusing on the Alexander technique and principles of qigong to enhance her own practice and compliment her teaching.

Funk Fusion Bellydance with Cera Byer: 3-5pm
This workshop brings you Hip hop, Pop n' Lock, and Funk flava, with intense, high energy conditioning and choreography. Our warm up will focus on layered isolations including syncopated body rhythms, layering two and three dimensional movements simultaneously, and traveling shimmy layers. Then we'll move on to funk fusion combos that you can use, deconstruct, or use to create your own! Come away challenged, inspired, and with lots to work on at home.

Cera has been studying dance, music, and theater since the age of 4. Her dance experience includes Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Modern, Afro-Haitian, Afro-Cuban, Afro-Brazilian, Kathak of India, Dunham Technique, Salsa, Samba, Tribal Bellydance, classical and contemporary Persian dance, Flamenco, and most recently, Capoiera. In addition to being the founder and Artistic Director of Damage Control Dance Theater, Cera has performed professionally with Shahrzad Dance Company (Classical and Contemporary Persian dance), PULSE Modern Dance Ensemble (Modern), Ultra Gypsy Dance Theater Company (Innovative Tribal Fusion Bellydance), Rara Tou Limen (San Francisco's only Carnaval contingent representing Haiti), as well as presenting her solo choreography in festivals, concert stages, lecture demonstrations, and private events across the Bay Area and beyond. Cera holds a BA in Dance (Performance and Choreography), with an emphasis in World Music and Dance from San Francisco State University, and certifications in Group Fitness Instruction (YMCA) and Pilates Mat (Sanchez St. Studios). Presently, she owns and operates ShoeBox Studio in San Francisco, in addition to teaching dance daily at a local high school.

Between them, they also bring a background rich in formal ballet training, West African dance, tango fusion and Indian dance technique. This has culminated in the development of their own unique, highly-acclaimed style of tribal bellydance. Kassar has since grown to both teach workshops and perform nationwide.

Greetings Fellow Drum & Dance folk!

For anyone who wants to join Eastwinds Tribal Drumming's pre-registered group "Beach Blanket Beledi" at the 25th Annual Mermaid Parade this Saturday , June 23rd in Coney Island, Brooklyn:

Here are some important details:

Cost: YES!!!! there is a $10 per person fee to march.. (There may be a discount if we get a large number...if that happens, it'll be a happy surprise! Plan on $10 just to be sure, ok?!) Our pre-registered group, which is called "BEACH BLANKET BELEDI," welcomes anybody and everybody OVER 18. Please note: Jeff & I are not making any money on this whatsoever-all fees go to the Mermaid Parade, to support the insanity that is Coney Island.

Time: Jeff & I will be there at 10 A.M. because I'm an anal retentive control freak...and... we want to make sure we get a good marching "spot" (not too close to anybody else's music, fer example.) We will be leading the ME percussion - we'd encourage the drummers to meet us no later than 1 pm... or not.. We would appreciate RIQ players...but any percussion is good. Remember...long parade, hot sun...plan ahead, my darlings!!!! Dancers can show up whenever the heck you like...it's all good! Just make sure you sign in and pay the nice Mermaid Parade folks. (BTW, zills...always a good parade idea!)

Finding us: I'll be l be dressed in Pirate/ Tribal garb, and wearing a small davul and a big smile. Jeff will be the big piratety-looking guy playing the AWESOME lead doumbek riffs. If anybody wants to make/carry a "Beach Blanket Beladi" sign, go for it! It's really crowded...you might want to arrive before 1pm...(Casey's left eye starts to twitch in anticipation of people showing up whenever they want..) Seriously, you REALLY might consider 1:15 at the very latest (noticible tremor starts in upper lip area.)

WARNING: Every year, some girls parade in pasties and other burlesque-style attire. There may be girls who will be scantily clad in our merry little band. Our group is strictly for OVER 18. Additionally, "Sheik of Araby" and "Gotta Go Back to Constantinople" way be spontaneously played on kazoo. Ok, you've been warned!

Questions??? Holla back on Tribe or to DrumNdancegrl@aol.com. See you on Saturday!

~ Casey

Besides for all the usual fierce belly and fusion dancers, this performance had added significance, as Kazuma did a piece for his recently passed younger brother -- a piece they worked on together that Tetsuya never had the chance to see completed. It was a moving tribute, and Kazuma danced with great energy, spirit, and inspiration as always.

A final note (don't mean to make light of things, but Kazuma, I, and others joked about this after the show)...Now that we've had Sera dancing at the November Hybrid two days before giving birth, and Kazuma dancing in March to celebrate the life of his brother and to grieve his passing.............we're going to have a wedding at the next show. Any volunteers? Ha.

Thanks to everyone who was part of Night of 1000 Goddesses. We were all looking forward to the show for sure, but something happened that night...some kind of alchemy (cut me some slack...I love this word/concept/metaphor, and it's so dang relevant so often) that was beyond what we had even expected. All of the artists involved (including the non-dancing ones) as well as the audience made this happen, by our trust in the dance and our vision of a larger context for expression and creativity.

If you're interested, check out the N1000 tribe for some thoughtful and eloquent praise of the show (as well as silliness: just as necessary) and some photos:
http://tribes.tribe.net/nightof1000goddesses

I'm posting this because I'm proud to have been a part of this event -- not for myself, but because I'm thankful to have been among such inspiring artists and I'm thankful to Zan for all her hard work and faith. She put together an event that showcased the variety and strength and potential of our dance form, and even more importantly, one that modelled real community -- a concept that's talked about a lot and not practiced enough. The event was amazing because we all worked together at the same time that we each honored our own voice and expression of the dance. This happened effortlessly, it wasn't premeditated -- we were all just ready for it, because it's something we truly believe is possible and positive. I don't mean to speak for the other dancers, but y'know what I mean here?

Thank you.

“Full Circle” CD Release Party &
Belly Dance & Drum Circle
June 24, 2006 from 4-9 PM

FAQ’s

Is this event really free? Yes, through the courtesy of the Ethical Humanist Society of Garden City, there is no cover charge. We encourage everyone to support the vendors, especially those from EHS.

Is there a set program/timetable? Sorta! Just add an "-ish" to these times and remember to go with the flow:
4-5 PM - Warm up/beginner doumbek workshop with Jeff & Casey
5-9 PM - Shopping!
5-7 PM - Open Freestyle Dancing & Drumming
7-7:45 PM - Performances by ChoveXani and Eastwinds,
followed by Open Dancing & Drumming from 8-9 PM.

Why can't I play my djembe or conga-you're strict! Jeff & I love djembes, and play them at all the kickin' LI drum jams. But this event is a place for the doumbeks, frame drums, zills, zarbs and musical instruments like flutes and ouds to be heard!

What if I don't have a doumbek? There will be a few loaner drums, plus new and used doumbeks for sale.

What if I've never played for belly dance before? Sit in on the warm-up from 4-5 PM with Casey and Jeff- you'll be playing along in no time! (Our instructional CD, “Enter the Heart of the Circle”, will also be on sale, which will help you to really rock at the next event!)

What exactly is a freestyle dance? Freestyle dancing is what happens when you listen to the music and then get up and dance any way the spirit moves you! Women, men, alone, with friends...belly dance, rock and roll, jazzercise routines, deadhead shuffle, Bollywood, Goth, West African...just move your body and have fun!

What is a CD release party? Your chance to hear- and hopefully buy- the first released copies of "Full Circle" by Eastwinds Tribal Drumming. To celebrate this event, all Eastwinds CD's, t-shirts and drums will be on sale. Yay! (Cash only, please!)

How do I get there? We suggest using mapquest for door-to-door directions. The address is 38 Old Country Road, Garden City, Long Island.

My question isn't on this list-how do I get in touch with you? First, check this website: www.circlebeat.com . If you still have any questions, just reply to this email and either Jeff or Casey will get back to you, right up 9 AM the morning of the 24th.

Can’t wait to see you in Garden City!!!!

If you haven't taken a workshop with them you're missing out :-) This will be my 3rd workshop with them and I can't wait!
Check it out...

Saturday April 15 from 2-5pm: Urban Tribal Technique
Sunday April 16 from 12-3pm: Smooth & Slinky Moves and Floorwork
Trisha Brown Dance Company Studios, 625 West 55th Street in Manhattan
Cost: $50 for each workshop/$90 for both

Learn new moves, short choreographies, and great technique tips from
one of the leading innovators on the tribal fusion scene. Heather
Stants has been breaking new ground with her Urban Tribal Dance Company
since 1999, infusing bellydance with elements of hip hop and
contemporary dance to create her unique and visionary style.

As an instructor, Heather is known for her clear communication style
and her ability to break down movements into easily understandable
concepts. She has trained most of the tribal bellydancers in the San
Diego area, spawning a flourishing local dance scene and inspiring
dancers across the country to step outside of the genre of Middle
Eastern dance and look to other dance forms for fusion ideas.
Heather's unique style has also made her a sought after workshop
instructor in the national and international belly dance communities.
Visit www.urbantribaldance.com for more info.

Contact sarah@alchemyperformance.com to register for the workshops or

I'm so happy I had the chance to bring us all together -- performers and audience alike. Thank you. Here's to more fun in the future. Until then, mark your calendars for the April 14-16 weekend when Urban Tribal comes to amaze us once again. Details in my next posting...
