I ran across this company while surfing fixedgeargallery.com. They look like they have some decent components for a pretty good price, I may end up with one of their wheelsets over the summer.

John and I rode this route this morning and it was quite fun. My feet were frozen and I think Johns were too. 43 degrees is pretty cold no matter what. Lots of gravel and a nasty Northwest wind for the return on Cty 8. Here is a map: http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/mn/rochester/30255924

However, my friend is still not sure if he can make it because he has orientation at the U of M all day. If anyone feels like joining me / us, feel free; the more fixxxxers the better.

Well, the results are back and I am confirmed to have strep throat.....and pink eye. I have received my stern talking to about my late night adventures and I feel compelled to report to you that my late night excursions are over, at least temporarily. I am not opposed though, to daytime pub crawls. I wonder if this weekend day drinking thing might be more attractive to some. Think about it; no darkness to impair your already impaired vision, less risk of bicycle theft, plenty of time to sleep it off, possibility for a sun tan, the perks really seem to be endless. So, if you are interested, please let me know and I'll start trying to think in another direction for the next couple of months, years, etc...

Rochester to Minneapolis

I am going to be riding to Minneapolis sometime Sunday in July. I was wondering if anyone would care to join me. I have a route planned to the south Metro right now. This part of the route is final. I am considering a few options for the journey into Minneapolis before I post the entire route. So far there is about 72 miles, 30-40 of which are gravel, with about 900 feet of climbing. Something to consider anyway.
Here is the map:

Come for the patriotism or come for the beer, but please come on the Fourth of July bike ride. We are going to be leaving the Central Park area around 10:30 on the Fourth. The plan is to cruise through the Silver Lake area while the "works" are going off and then ride to Glynners, Whistle Binkies and then on the the Whiskey Bones Traveling Antique Roadshow on north Broadway. We won't drop anybody so bring your cruisers and have a good time. Questions, leave 'em here or get a hold of me somehow. Oh, and tell your friends.

Thank you all for participating in the March 24th Bicycle and Pedestrain Forum at the Rochester Area Family Y. We're trying to keep the momentum going by working with CardioVision 2020 to sponsor a Bike-4-Fun Day Event. Cyclists are encouraged to ride from home (or another location if they live far away) to Mayo Park behind the Civic Center, and arrive between 9:30 and 10:00. Details on the event, including activities at the park can be found on the Olmsted County web site: http://www.co.olmsted.mn.us/ The link directly to a .pdf brochure is: http://www.co.olmsted.mn.us/docs/2007cardiovision_bike4fun.pdf

Hope to see you there.

I am going to Alabama on the 9th of June and I am taking along my bicycle. i am flying Northwest and I am wondering what the best way to transport my bicycle would be. Do I check it and fly it on the plane or use Fed-Ex or DHL or something like that? Anybody?

I would like everyone to keep in mind how important it is to show support for this project. The DNR will be monitoring the level of area support by using the comment cards and by the number of people that sign in at the door and letters sent to Denny Thompson. He also told us that people can send email voicing support or concerns to Dennis.Thompson@dnr.state.mn.us. If you can't attend either of these nights please take a few minutes and send Denny your thoughts about this proposed State Trail system.
It really makes a difference in how projects are looked at in the DNR or when we are looking for funding to be able to show that we have the support of area residents, so please ask friends, family, and members of health oriented groups to attend or write to Denny.
Thanks,
Jeff
Whitewater Country State Trail Master Plan

You are invited to share your thoughts and recommendations on a proposed master plan for the Whitewater Country State Trail. This is a conceptual plan that will guide the overall design of the trail and how the final alignments will be selected.

The Whitewater Country Loop State Trail includes part of the Blufflands State Trail System and the Great River Ridge State Trail. The Whitewater Country Loop State Trail will be an important link in the overall trail system of southeast Minnesota. It will provide a recreation / transportation connection between the cities of Rochester, Eyota, Dover, St. Charles, Elba, Plainview, Elgin and Viola. The trail will connect to Chester Woods County Park, Whitewater State Park and Carley State Park. It will connect to the Douglas State Trail through the Rochester city trail system, and the rest of the Blufflands State Trail System in southeast Minnesota. The trail is projected to be approximately 50 miles long. The actual length will determined by the final route selected. The entire length of the trail will be open to pedestrian and bicycle use. Most of the trail will be open to horse and snowmobile use.

Two public open houses to review and discuss the draft master plan are scheduled for April 11, at the city hall in St. Charles, and April 12 at the PEM K-3 ElementaryBuilding in Plainview. Both meetings will be an open house format, so stop by anytime between 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. and talk with DNR staff and local trail supporters.

After April 2nd, copies of the master plan will be available at public libraries in Plainview and St. Charles, and at the city halls in Dover and Eyota, it can also be viewed or downloaded from the DNR website at: http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/input/mgmtplans/trails/index.html

Comments on the master plan will be accepted through May 15, and can be provided at the public open house, or can be mailed to: Dennis Thompson, Principal Planner, DNR, Division of Trails & Waterways, 500 Lafayette Road, box 52, St. Paul, MN 55155-4052.

Hi! My name's Nate. I run a tribe called Rah Rah Rockchester, MN. It's a very similar tribe to the Alley Cats as it's a meeting place for bored folks in Rochester. I just wanted to extend a friendly invitation for anyone on the Alley Cat tribe to check mine as well. You're welcome to post, join or just say hi to me as I'm new to town. In any case, thanks for reading this.

Hey there Rochester! I wanted to post up this little promotion we're throwing. We at Cranked Magazine are heading into our fifth issue. This will make our one year anniversary, and because of this we're giving a set of wheels away to one lucky reader. Why wheels? The upcoming issue is going to feature a rather in-depth how-to article on a unique wheel lacing method. The wheels featured are going to be sweet, and to get entered to win them all you have to do is pre-order a copy of the up-coming issue. Check out more details at our website: "http://crankedmag.com". Not only will you get a copy of our anniversary issue, but you might just come out with a set of precision hand-built wheels.

We're a real live group of bike enthusiasts that recognize Rochester Alley Cat as an equally enthusiastic group of bikers. Check us out and let us know what you think!

The following message was sent to me from Cory Rubin. He is running for city council in the 3rd ward. I believe I will be attending this and not the Madison race.

Greetings,
I was recently contacted by Ken Pentel (Green Party Candidate for Governor) to possibly join him on a bicycle ride. Ken has heard about my campaign for city council and about my successful bicycle ride to the Farmers' Market in August. Ken is planning to be in Rochester the weekend of Oct 28 for an upcoming forum. He plans to ride his bicycle from the Cities to Rochester and was wondering if anyone from Rochester would like to join him along his route. I plan to join Ken. I think this will be a great opportunity for media coverage for my campaign with approximately one week left to go before the election and it should be great fun!

Please let me know if you are interested. Ken will be contacting me soon with more details regarding his route. When we talked he planned to arrive in Rochester on Saturday, Oct 28 and stay through Monday (the day of the forum).

Let's keep the momentum going!
I got another idea for the fixed gear & singlespeed riders

A fall 1/2 century ride/race. What do you think? I'm pretty sure this route:
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&cp=43.99286~-92.49967&style=r&lvl=15&scene=3936434&cid=7B577128C8DB2577!159
Comes in at about 50 miles. All pavement. No support, no sag wagon. We just pick a date and race/ride it. Fixed gear and single speed only. Well, I wouldn't keep geared riders from riding, but I want to keep it so it's competitive for the fixies out there. I'm gonna say a tentitive date of October 28, 2006. That'll leave enough time for those who want to race it to train.

This is pretty much inspired by the Guitar Ted Death Ride Invitational. http://gtdri.blogspot.com/ But 105 miles in one day on gravel roads in Iowa seem kinda nutty. If he has it again next year, maybe I'll do it. Hey Carl, I'm sure this will help with your SSCXT. Heh-heh!

I just found out about this thing about an hour ago, I'm not sure of the details yet.
It's this sunday (the 10th) and it'll be a 15 or 30 mile option ride with 4 or 5 stops. The police will be keeping the route free of traffic.
Paul (he was at the food drive race) is leaving at 7am and is planning on being back at 1-2pm. I shot an email to him to see if he still has a seat open in his car that I could take.
I'm thinking that if anyone else is interested in going I could throw our rack on my car and do some sort of caravan deal.
So I guess if anyone wants to go, gimmie a holler.

When: Labor Day, Monday, September 4, 9:00am

Why: Collect food for www.channel-one.org

Bring: Your bike, a lock, a backpack or bag, a helmet, some friends, and about $20 to purchase food items.

How: You will be given a list of food items that must be purchased at local grocery stores. Only one item may be purchased at each store. Receipts will need to be kept and submitted with the list and food items at the finish.

This is a race on open streets. You will have full and complete responsibilities for your own actions. I encourage everyone to wear his or her helmet and to ride safely, in a lawful manner. I will not keep anyone from participating, but strongly recommend that you be confidant riding on busy streets with traffic.

The sponsors and I will not be held responsible for any accident, ticket, or injury you may receive.

There is no set course, so there’s no way to cheat by taking shortcuts.

You are required to purchase each item from a different store, but you may use any store in town.

You may choose to ride with another rider or riders (if you can keep up), but you shall only purchase items for yourself. You will need to provide a receipt for each of your purchases.

Bicycle choice is completely up to you. You are responsible for your bicycle and its operation and lawfulness. All bikes are welcome.

Have fun.

Knowledge of the streets and roads is important in ANY alleycat event. The hometown riders seem to always have an advantage. This is true of any sport. I'm attempting to remove some of this advantage. I should have a map with most of the MAJOR grocery stores marked on it for riders to view prior to the start. (or to refresh riders memories during the race). This is in no way, a map fo stores that must be used. You may go to ANY store to purchase an item on the shopping list/manifest.

There are also free maps available at many of the realestate offices and hotels in town. I may have some available for riders to take but you may want to be sure to pick one up before getting to the park that morning. You can also use the internet as a resource by finding where the grocery stores are.

Second Annual Food Drive Alleycat

I'm begining work on having this event again this year. If you weren't around last year, this was an alleycat race where the manifest contained a list of food items, a list of grocery stores as well as some other checkpoints on it. Riders had to purchase a food item off the list from each grocery store and provide a receipt. All the food was then donated to Channel1 food bank.

The format for this year is similer, but I want to get more food. That's all I'm gonna say.

I'm also getting sponsors to donate prizes. I'm in talks with some great companies. One of the first to sign on is Chicago WIG. http://www.chicagowig.com
They make extreemly useful cycling products. Check em out!

More info to come.

hey all--
sorry for the last minute info, but i thought i'd throw it up here. there is a critical mass bike ride today (friday june 30) at 5pm (we ride @ 5:30) @ central park (1st ave and 2nd street nw). this ride will be dedicated to Arianna Macnamara, a 7 year old girl who was killed here by a car on her bike a few weeks ago. the ride will go to the spot where she died and back to central park. there, we will kick back look at all the pretty bikes, maybe drink a beer or two, and probably have another ride--more of a celebration ride. THEN...later there will be a critical ASS ride. ...but, if you wanna know the deets on that, you gotta show up. we'll probably leave from the park for that ride too.
hope to see ya there.
oh...and a couple of us stayed up all night fixing old bikes to have on hand at the park for those without. so if you don't have a bike--come anyway. we will provide. and if yer not riding cuz you think you're too fat or lazy or out of shape (bullshit, by the way...and it's an easy ride), come join us anyway and bring your bike for someone else to ride.
much love

Some dudes tried to mug my brother and I when we were riding at about 1am... They tried to use their car / car doors to stop us. it seemed like they were doing it because it looked like a chance to make some quick cash... they weren't that well coordinated or determined... they took off as soon as my brother was on the phone to the cops.

find a buddy and make sure you've got a phone readily at hand... none of that keeping it in a backpack bullshit.

if you've got a chain lock and a belligerient personality, sling it over your shoulder so it's readily available... nobody wants to mess with that. we're probably going to invest in some mace as well.

It has to be a miracle! I had TWO cars stop and let me cross a downtown street on my way to work today! Did Mother Mayo send out a memo ? Is it because it's spring and people are really aware of bikes ? Or could it be because of the high price of gas that people are starting to think alternative ways of commuting ? I have notice an increase in new riders on my route work every day. Or maybe it just people realize I'm not part of VeloRochester ! Sorry I just had to throw that in.

Also, I've spent about a month on my xtracycle equiped bike and I gotta tell ya, it is the way to go. I haul all my usual stuff plus all my lacrosse stuff and still have room for more. Watch here for more. There is a rumor floating around abou t a local bike company making an xtracycle type bike.

All right ya'll I've haven't have much to say or time to say it lately, but the hockey season is come to a crashing halt, I'm sure that will change.

Repair shop inthe back of my garage is about as full as I can get it. Now just to collect some parts and a few other tools and we'll have a spot to fix up the rigs.

I'll have a Surly Pugsley hear sometime this week. Stop out and give it a test ride. This is one of the wildest rides you've ever been on. Check it out here www.surlybikes.com

All righty then let's get the shit talkin here.

growth?

I may be a stick in the mud, but this site has not grown much since it's inception. I guess if all we are going to do is mill over the same subjects (i.e. how great the next race will be, are two of us going to meet and ride at night, etc...) what is the difference between writing online and calling each other on the telephone? If this message board membership doesn't grow even I risk losing my interest. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the opportunity to go back and forth with like minded people, my current interest though is not directed at walking in circles. I will continue to attend the first Saturday rides and I will continue to check this site for further information, but I regret to inform this stagnent group (myself included) that if the member base continues to reside at the same level for much longer I may just have to go back to the old fashioned means of communication; If I see you I'll talk to you, If I don't see you, maybe I'll call you, or even better yet, maybe I'll send you a letter.

p.s. Maybe this is all just related to the fact that this group was started immediately before this regions period of most inclement weather. Maybe the low turn outs in this bitter cold (35 degrees) is taking its toll. Maybe spring will hold better attendance. Maybe I am just crazy and am experiencing some mid season blues. Either way I had to say something.

Big Spring Race?

Feeling compelled to initiate some local race that is slightly larger than our "alley cat" rides on the first Saturday of each month. Maybe something that would exist on an annual basis. Any ideas or feedback would be interesting.
I think I like the idea of a cyclo-cross meets alley-cat meets mountain meets bmx meets stationary bike type race. Thoughts?
