Re: The man who grew a finger
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 12:05 AMThat's quite amazing. Pixie dust, from a pig's bladder, what do you know? -

Fri, May 2, 2008 - 2:46 AMThey didn't mention the frog-tongue and orphan's heart that you mix the bladder-scrapings with.
Auld school.

Mon, May 5, 2008 - 6:32 AMHow can it be junk science if it actually happened? That's like saying antibiotics are junk science. -

What they're saying is "junk" is the "pig bladder pixie dust mixture," not that his finger grew back. He only had about half an inch of flesh gone, no missing bone. They allege that it could have grown back without the pixie dust "treatment."
I don't know who is right about the collagen mixture, if it works or not. I do know that on Christmas Eve when I was young I ran after my sisters who went to shut the garage door, and I got my right pointer finger stuck in the door, badly damaging it. Went to the emergency room, they treated it, and weeks later, I grew back a nail, and a few weeks after that I grew back a nail. It's not like I was missing my finger-tip, but it was still quite a damaging injury, yet I have an even solider nail on that finger than any of my others because of that.
These days, when a bone breaks, often a substance is used that helps the bone heal quicker. So there is no reason that this *has* to be junk science. Pigs are a lot like humans, their skin is very similar to ours. It's said that eating pig flesh is the closest thing to eating human flesh, that those who like pig flesh enjoy the taste of human flesh. -

Was not clear enough about this. What really happened is because of the damage, I lost the fingernail right away, and after a few weeks I grew back a nail, and a few weeks after that it fell off, and there was another nail underneath.

Re: The man who grew a finger
Mon, May 5, 2008 - 10:54 AMHey, one article cites a claim that it's junk science, therefore, it must be true, right? -

No, not necessarily. But the same goes in reverse. Just because it's said that it works doesn't mean it does. It could just be nature working its healing course, "pixie dust," or not. -

Re: The man who grew a finger
Mon, May 5, 2008 - 6:14 PMHumans are not naturally predisposed to regrowing fingers. I disagree with the article that the injury looked like just a minor, everyday wound that healed naturally.
Under normal circumstances if you lose more than just a trivial bit of skin or nail, and instead the whole tip of your finger, it's not going to regenerate naturally back to its original form. -

Re: The man who grew a finger
Mon, May 5, 2008 - 6:20 PMThere definitely could be something going on here, but I am not surprised that many people incl. scientists do not believe it :)
I posted the follow-up merely to demonstrate that not everyone is buying it. Now I'm off to tend my pet unicorn. -

Re: The man who grew a finger
Mon, May 5, 2008 - 9:45 PMI'm not surprised either that some scientists are doubting the pixie dust does anything. My intuition, for what it's worth, says there is something to it. That the finger wanted to regrow itself, and that something in the pig's bladder cells helped that to occur. Normally a finger would just heal up at the point where it was cut off. I know someone with a finger like that. -
