Okay so clearly we are going to have to pack lighter than usual.
The question is, how much lighter?
When I've gone over to Catalina before they've had pretty strict rules about how much
you can bring on the boat due to weight restrictions and such. And I know we don't need
our stoves, but most of us are still bringing tents, chairs, air mattresses etc..... as well as
our clothing so some guidance about how much we'll be allowed to bring would be very
helpful.

Re: Gear and such....
Tue, April 1, 2008 - 11:40 PMThis is a potentially BIG issue, because if we're restricted on what we can bring (and it seems reasonable to assume that this will be the case), we'll have to rent equipment from the campground itself, which is nice enough to rent us the following:
Camping Gear Available for Rent:
* 2 Burner Propane Stove $12.00 per day (includes propane)
* Propane Lanterns $11.00 per day (includes propane)
* Sleeping Bag & Pad $12.00 per day
* 4 Man Tent $16.00 per day
* Sleeping Pad $3.00 per day
* 3 Burner Propane Stove $20.00 per day (propane not included)
Items Available for Purchase:
* Firewood $8.00 per bundle (burns for about 2 hours)
* Propane $6.00 per canister (16oz canister)
* Charcoal $11.00 per bag (8lb bag)
* Fire Starters $1.00 each
* 5 gal. Propane Tank $20.00 per day
(info taken from the AP web page almaparadiso.com/paradise/camping/ )
So yeah, before I buy a ticket myself, I'd like an answer to Vixxen's inquiry, as well. -

Tue, April 1, 2008 - 11:52 PMI've forwarded Vix's question to the guys. If I don't hear back soon, I'll make some phone calls.

Re: Gear and such....
Wed, April 2, 2008 - 10:04 AMOkay....also the Catalina Express says you cannot take the following items
on their boats (and I'm assuming we're chartering our boat through them?)
Articles And Materials Prohibited In Baggage
Acids, batteries, boxes (except those containing apparel or mechanic’s tools),
camp stoves and lanterns (except electric or when propane or butane canisters
are removed), charcoal, chinaware, human corpses, construction materials, cots,
dangerous articles, explosives, firewood, fireworks, food stuffs, furniture, gambling devices,
gasoline, glass or glassware, guns (loaded), household articles, inflammable materials,
internal combustion engines of any kind, jewelry, kerosene, liquids, lumber, matches,
merchandise, motorcycles, nails, outboard motors, perishable articles, paint, paint thinner,
private papers or articles of extraordinary value, produce, televisions (except portable), tires,
trail bikes, typewriters (except portable), and wire.
We need to know if these rules are different since our boat is privately chartered
because although the human corpses shouldn't be an issue.....
food stuff and produce might present an issue. Even though we're being
fed, some of us have dietary restrictions etc... and if we can't bring any food
at all, that might be a problem for some of us. Also it says we can't bring
anything glass, or any "liquids" so we can't bring our own booze?? -

Re: Gear and such....
Wed, April 2, 2008 - 11:59 AMTwo Harbors has a pirate weekend every year that I think would be as close to this party as can be, and I went. I took an entire cooler over with out a problem. If you can I would wait to get ice until you get there. There is a small store right off the doc. They aren't going to go through your stuff (at least they didn't when I went). I think that the normal about of gear is fine. Just know that it's kind of ruff paths in places, so the less to have to carry the better. -

Re: Gear and such....
Wed, April 2, 2008 - 12:14 PMThat's good to know.....so they DO make exceptions for some events. -

Re: Gear and such....
Wed, April 2, 2008 - 12:19 PMoh! bungy cord coolers and such closed, and the more stuff you can bungy into a group of things the better. Small things tend to get seperated from their friends -

Re: Gear and such....
Wed, April 2, 2008 - 2:53 PMWhat is the schlepage going to be like? If we're hand carrying our stuff from car to boat, boat to shore, shore to campsite I'm thinking this is more of a backpacking type adventure than our usual bringallyourcostumesplayacoatsairmattressesfiretoys&coolersfilledwithbooze type trip. Quiet a different packing experience & I'll wait to hear the verdict before I make my lists. The good news is the weather will probably be gorgeous & we won't need too many clothes, the Chicken Shack will make food packing unnecessary (bless Viagra & the foresight of our event coordinators) and there is a little store nearby for drink needs.
Still, holding pattern for now. -

Re: Gear and such....
Wed, April 2, 2008 - 3:43 PMthe store is a bit pricey though, so I would bring the big amount with u.

Re: Gear and such....
Wed, April 2, 2008 - 4:11 PMI read someting about a "Safari Bus" or something from Two Harbors to the campsite, but I'm not sure what that means exactly.

Re: Gear and such....
Thu, April 3, 2008 - 8:28 AMI would only be concerned with bringing a small tent, an air mattress and a couple small blankets.
Maybe a small camp chair or two.
It sounds like that would be allowed on the boat.
It would be nice to know. -

Re: Gear and such....
Thu, April 3, 2008 - 11:37 AMThink of this event as "Burner Light." When you pack, think can I survive without this? We can easily make do with very little for 3 days.
There will be two vans that will take our stuff from the docks to the campsite. Taking as little as possible will make it easier on everyone.
Thanks. Auriel -

Re: Gear and such....
Sat, April 26, 2008 - 2:39 AMFor those of you who don't know, Auriel is the event coordinator. For that reason alone you should place great weight behind what she suggests. In addition, Blue just told me in the strongest terms possible the same thing she said here. Pack Light.
