restaurant job

hello there,
this seems like the right site to ask...

what advice do people have about restaurant dancing? just got my first solo job, start next Friday in quite large place where they would like Isis wings and veilwork (yikes!) have got regular gig already but much smaller one where you mostly have to work on the spot and try not to drop sequins in the couscous! and I share it with a friend so less pressure, usually I improvise alot... should I try to choreograph more of a show for this one?

would love to hear other peoples experiences

Hi Katherine. I don't know if this will be of any help, but I did my first restaurant gig in February with my troupe (there are three of us) and some of the choreography we used had veilwork. I suggest scouting the location and perhaps rehearsing there if possible. When we danced at our restaurant gig we were unprepared for the GIANT COLUMN in the middle of the dancefloor/stage! Haha, pretty funny, actually. We made the best of it, but it was a challenge to work around that incredibly poorly placed column. Definitely not a great venue for the three of us. Solo dancers did much better with the space. In a nutshell, try to become familiar with the space and I'm sure you will be fine. GOOD LUCK!

Congratulations for this gig - well done.

I agree with Donna, if you can check the place out before the actual gig things will be much smoother. I would even take a veil and your isis wings to have a play around to see what you can and cant do.
If you are opening your set with isis wings and dont plan to mingle around the tables then this can be choreographed (probably best as I wouldn't want Joe Public anywhere near my wings!).
If you can have a chaperone or member of staff on hand so you can hand them your wings once you are done, then mingle around the tables - to me this part would be improvised.

On the whole I tend to improvise during "verses" of a song, that is when I go around the tables, and have a light choreograph for the chorus and I would dance in the centre where most people could see me.

I hope this helps, and good luck:-D

well... the bad news is no gig tonight, they just called to say they didn't have enough bookings, didn't realise it was good friday!
the good news is it's moved to friday the 4th so I have another 2 weeks to rehearse, but they want me every friday after that which seems like alot of pressure when I have a full time job and teach 3 classes a week already. I said there was no way I could do every friday because I am away some weekends or have other comitments and he said 'that's ok you can do the Saturday instead' which seemed to be missing the point a bit... but I don't want to lose the gig, help! maybe I could find someone to share it with... any thoughts?

EXCELLENT idea! Tag team dancers! I completely understand your situation...I dance in my free time as well. I mean, I DO have a life involving a family and other commitments. I think you have hit on a wonderful way to insure this and future bookings with this establishment. Do you already know someone who might be interested? Just be sure to find someone whos style appeals to the management as yours apparently already does. Congratulations on being in demand...it's what we all really want, right?

    Congratulations on the gig!

I think if they want a regular Friday night spot and you can't make that commitment, see if you know other local dancers that you can rota the gig out with. You would have to discuss with the restaurant who would be responsible for handling the rota though...

Did you go and check out the venue yet? It must be a pretty big place if they want you to use Isis wings...on the other hand, maybe it isn't. Maybe the manager/owner just thinks Isis wings will look good and doesn't have a realistic sense of what's achievable in the space. The more restaurant work you do, the more you'll realise that you sometimes have to be the voice of reason with over-imaginative (i.e., demanding and unreasonable) restaurateurs ;-)

I would say, unless the owner has specifically asked for a 'show' show, roughly choreo an opening number with the Isis wings, then go out and improv for the rest of your set. In a lot of the places I dance your main function is to entertain and get people up to dance...there's little room there for the kind of artistry we might like to be practicing (although you do get to sharpen your cat-herding skills!) It helps to be clear what they want from you at the venue. Have they given you a length of time they expect your set to be?

    Good luck!

      Thanks!
know what you mean about cat herding...at the other gig I share with my friend Sarah we have little bets with each other over who we can get up to dance... the owners are really lovely, but I think their measure of a good evening has alot to do with audience participation and how much lebanese wine is consumed ( not altogether unrelated... but they are a very well behaved crowd :) )
This venue is big enough for Isis wings, my only problem is getting in enough practice with the things, my house is pretty small and so I practice before class, which can leave me a bit giddy... not good for teaching!
still working on the sharing thing, Sarah is not keen on dancing alone, but I have some other possibilites...we'll see LOL XXX

Now didn't I teach you better than that! C'mon girl, where's your confidence, get up there and show them what you can do!! I've seen you with wings and veil so why are you nervous? Go out there, and give it your best.... every week! Different audience, you may get fed up, but they don't cos they've not seen it before! Best advice I can give is smile and ENJOY!!!! Good luck!

Thanks so much Lindsey! I'll try not to let you down... you are a fab teacher but I think i must have missed the 'balls of steel' workshop!
you know what I'm like, I swing wildly between the 'yes, of course I can do this' and the 'oh my God who am I kidding!' camp but I'm really glad I've had dancing at robbies to give me a taste of restaurant work before this. It's just a bigger space and more people that's all...
Did a workshop today i thought was going to be adults and they all turned out to be 6 and 7 yr olds, now that was scary! really winging it...;)
will let you know how it goes on Friday. LOL xxx

so... this is my advice, beware greeks bearing gifts... they cancelled twice at the last minute, I pointed out that I didn't find that acceptable... haven't heard from them since. no regrets, I'd rather not be messed about... and.. Robbies has asked us to dance more often, yipeee! : )
