IMPORTANT!! Beach Access Hawaii Rallies on THIS SATURDAY 2/2/2008

FOR MORE DETAILS & OUTER ISLAND RALLY LOCATIONS,PLEASE VISIT WWW.BEACHACCESSHAWAII.ORG

If you're reading this, chances are you're involved in some kind of grassroots organization where you live. You love Hawaii, and care about its future. Individually, there's only so much any one group or person can do. But together, we can show our government leaders that we are a force to be reckoned with.

That's why on Sat., Feb. 2 between 10 am and noon -- Groundhog Day -- at locations throughout the islands, we're going to stage sign waving rallies to publicize the need to reverse the loss of public beach access. On Oahu, it's the growing number of locked gates on “private“ beachside roads and loss of free parking near surf spots...

On the outer islands, it's private landowners denying access through their property to reach beaches (see LA Times clip below). It's fishermen being blocked from prime shoreline spots. It's also resorts that make us feel unwelcome on “their“ beaches, or turn away locals because they claim the parking lots are full.

Whose beach is it, anyway? Or for that matter, whose Hawaii is it?

It's time we stand together and highlight beach and ocean access issues on each island to get our county and state governments to work together on this issue. But we need your help.

Lee Cataluna did a column about it in Sunday's Advertiser (Jan. 20)... The Star-Bulletin has contacted us and is working on a major story about beach access... We now have confirmed rallies on Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island!

It's been like a tsunami -- started with a small ripple, and has been building for the past month: first Beach Access Hawaii, Surfrider and Kahea, along with folks in East Oahu and the Windward Ahupua'a Alliance, then the Defend Oahu Coalition, Keep the North Shore Country, Common Ground, and others joined us from all over the islands. Saturday, Feb. 2 -- “G-Day“ -- it all comes together. And we are stoked!

Here's the tentative schedule and locations... check this site the day before for last second changes.

9:30 AM - 10 AM, STATE CAPITOL PRESS CONFERENCE - Activists, community leaders and government officials will speak about public beach access and what needs to be done to acquire more rights of way. A trolley will transport media and sign wavers to the Ala Wai harbor rally location... If you want to ride the trolley, call Rich Figel at 262-5073 or email me at:
figeli001@hawaii.rr.com.

10 AM UNTIL NOON. MAJOR RALLIES AT...

KAILUA - Three main spots...
- North Kalaheo Ave., between Kailuana Loop and Namala Place. Call Wendy Watson (391-1568) if you want to join our sign-making pizza party on Weds. night, Jan. 30, 6:30 to 9 PM.

- Kalama Beach park/public access area. If you want to help, please contact John Stallings at 294.1794. We'd like to have an after-rally potluck picnic there too. Bring your grills, grinds and kids!

- South Kalaheo Ave., in front of the Kalapawai Market. Ricky Bermudez, our Kailua Man on the streets, is in charge of that rally. His number is 347-0838. Special mahalo to Ricky for single-handedly getting over 250 petition signatures!

NORTH SHORE - Area in front of Turtle Bay Resort. Call Tim Vandeveer (388-0660) or Mark Cunningham (224-2626) for details on sign making party before G-Day.

EAST OAHU - Locations in Portlock, Aina Haina and Hawaii Kai. Contact Jeannine Johnson (373-2874), Ann Marie Kirk (371-3072) or Elizabeth Reilly (396-7011) for details.

ALA WAI HARBOR - Next to Hilton lagoon, where the state wants to replace free parking with pay parking. What's next -- pay parking at our public beach parks too? Call Melissa Ling-Ing (255-1959) to get the scoop on the DLNR harbor plans.

If you can, please call into your favorite Hawaiian music or rock radio stations and request songs that fit in with our theme of protest, people power, and most importantly, our connection to the aina, ocean and beaches of Hawaii. That's what this is really all about.

You have the power to change things for the better. Make it happen. Stand with us on G-Day! Below are links to promotional flyers and petitions, please make some copies and give them to your family, friends, & neighbor.
