IMPORTANT BEACH ACCESS RALLIES on Saturdy 2/2/2008 (Yes, THIS Saturday!!!)

(PLEASE FORWARD THIS E-MAIL!!!)

IMPORTANT!! Beach Access Hawaii Rallies on THIS SATURDAY 2/2/2008

FOR MORE DETAILS & OUTER ISLAND RALLY LOCATIONS,PLEASE VISIT WWW.BEACHACCESSHAWAII.ORG

If you're reading this, chances are you're involved in some kind of grassroots organization where you live. You love Hawaii, and care about its future. Individually, there's only so much any one group or person can do. But together, we can show our government leaders that we are a force to be reckoned with.

That's why on Sat., Feb. 2 between 10 am and noon -- Groundhog Day -- at locations throughout the islands, we're going to stage sign waving rallies to publicize the need to reverse the loss of public beach access. On Oahu, it's the growing number of locked gates on “private“ beachside roads and loss of free parking near surf spots...

On the outer islands, it's private landowners denying access through their property to reach beaches (see LA Times clip below). It's fishermen being blocked from prime shoreline spots. It's also resorts that make us feel unwelcome on “their“ beaches, or turn away locals because they claim the parking lots are full.

Whose beach is it, anyway? Or for that matter, whose Hawaii is it?

It's time we stand together and highlight beach and ocean access issues on each island to get our county and state governments to work together on this issue. But we need your help.

Lee Cataluna did a column about it in Sunday's Advertiser (Jan. 20)... The Star-Bulletin has contacted us and is working on a major story about beach access... We now have confirmed rallies on Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island!

It's been like a tsunami -- started with a small ripple, and has been building for the past month: first Beach Access Hawaii, Surfrider and Kahea, along with folks in East Oahu and the Windward Ahupua'a Alliance, then the Defend Oahu Coalition, Keep the North Shore Country, Common Ground, and others joined us from all over the islands. Saturday, Feb. 2 -- “G-Day“ -- it all comes together. And we are stoked!

Here's the tentative schedule and locations... check this site the day before for last second changes.

9:30 AM - 10 AM, STATE CAPITOL PRESS CONFERENCE - Activists, community leaders and government officials will speak about public beach access and what needs to be done to acquire more rights of way. A trolley will transport media and sign wavers to the Ala Wai harbor rally location... If you want to ride the trolley, call Rich Figel at 262-5073 or email me at:
figeli001@hawaii.rr.com.

10 AM UNTIL NOON. MAJOR RALLIES AT...

KAILUA - Three main spots...
- North Kalaheo Ave., between Kailuana Loop and Namala Place. Call Wendy Watson (391-1568) if you want to join our sign-making pizza party on Weds. night, Jan. 30, 6:30 to 9 PM.

- Kalama Beach park/public access area. If you want to help, please contact John Stallings at 294.1794. We'd like to have an after-rally potluck picnic there too. Bring your grills, grinds and kids!

- South Kalaheo Ave., in front of the Kalapawai Market. Ricky Bermudez, our Kailua Man on the streets, is in charge of that rally. His number is 347-0838. Special mahalo to Ricky for single-handedly getting over 250 petition signatures!

NORTH SHORE - Area in front of Turtle Bay Resort. Call Tim Vandeveer (388-0660) or Mark Cunningham (224-2626) for details on sign making party before G-Day.

EAST OAHU - Locations in Portlock, Aina Haina and Hawaii Kai. Contact Jeannine Johnson (373-2874), Ann Marie Kirk (371-3072) or Elizabeth Reilly (396-7011) for details.

ALA WAI HARBOR - Next to Hilton lagoon, where the state wants to replace free parking with pay parking. What's next -- pay parking at our public beach parks too? Call Melissa Ling-Ing (255-1959) to get the scoop on the DLNR harbor plans.

If you can, please call into your favorite Hawaiian music or rock radio stations and request songs that fit in with our theme of protest, people power, and most importantly, our connection to the aina, ocean and beaches of Hawaii. That's what this is really all about.

You have the power to change things for the better. Make it happen. Stand with us on G-Day! Below are links to promotional flyers and petitions, please make some copies and give them to your family, friends, & neighbor.

THE TIME IS NOW, PLEASE JOIN US ON SATURDAY!!!

Aloha Folks,

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

Due to a fire early Christmas morning at Charley's, we URGENTLY need
your help in finding a new venue/private party for the Mama's Cookin show
scheduled for THIS SATURDAY, December 29th, 2007. Fortunately no one was
hurt in the fire, and damage is reported to be relatively minor. (actually the news is reporting heavy damage)

Mama's Cookin', traveling here from Colorado/California, had only
one show scheduled on Maui, before heading off to Oahu for 3 shows.

If you've been wanting to have a private party with a great mainland band,
and just haven't had the money to fly them out her yet, here's your opportunity...

www.myspace.com/mamascookin

Please contact me at 808.294.1794 as we can discuss potential options!

Peace, love, and aloha,

AlohaGroove Podcasts?

It seems that a lot of people aren't always familiar with the mainland bands I promote here in Hawaii, and I was thinking of having "sampler" podcasts created for each band I bring out.

Would anyone out there be interested in creating podcasts for each of the bands I book & promote??

It'd be an inexpensive & effective way for me (and the bands) to get their music out in advance of their shows....

Any comments or suggestions are appreciated!

Street Team Help Needed (Maui, Oahu, Big Island, Kauai)

Aloha & Happy Holidays from AlohaGroove!

We are busy planning lots of great music events for 2008, and are getting really excited about the upcoming New Year’s Tour with Mama’s Cookin’ show on Maui & Oahu. If you haven’t had a chance to check out their music, they have six songs available on their myspace page at www.myspace.com/mamascookin. Full details on the entire Mama’s Cookin’ Tour are available at www.AlohaGroove.com

In the past AlohaGroove has had great street team support, but unfortunately we’ve lost a few of our street team members lately. That being said, AlohaGroove is seeking street team volunteers ON ALL ISLANDS to help with the follow responsibilities:

1.	Passing out flyers provided by AlohaGroove. Flyers are left at retail establishments, on bulletin boards, etc., and also are passed out at events that might have a similar crowd.
2.	Put up posters provided by AlohaGroove
3.	Burn copies of CD’s (cds provided by AlohaGroove)

Even if you have signed up to be a part of the street team in the past, please shoot us an e-mail and re-confirm that we have your current contact information, and let me know how you’d like to help out!

In return for being a key part of the AlohaGroove team, you will get a free ticket to the show. Expect to contribute about 2 to 3 hours for each ticket. If you are interested in being a part of the AlohaGroove team, please email me with your name, phone number, and how you’d like to help us continue bringing quality live music to the Hawaiian Islands! Sometime we also have cd’s, free drinks, t-shirts, stickers to kick down for your help!

If you have other talents or hooks up (lodging connections, cheap printing, FREE BEER ;) that could benefit AlohaGroove, please let us know how you can help us! Other areas where we occasionally need help are graphic design for banners/posters, posting digital flyers to various internet sites, day-of-show ticket sales, day-of-show set-up & break down, decorations. Of course, we’ll take care of anyone who “hooks us up” with their connections!

Please forward this email to people who might be interested in helping out!

MAHALO TO EVERYONE WHO HAS HELPED OUT DURING THE FIRST YEAR OF ALOHAGROOVE EVENTS!

Frame of Mind in Concert on Maui

Dec. 14th & 15th, 2007
Charley's in Paia, Maui

www.frameofmindlive.com

a recent show: http://www.archive.org/download/FOM2007-08-02.aud.flac16/FOM2007-08-02.aud.flac16_vbr.m3u

Emerging from the beaches of southern California, migrating to the mountains of central Idaho, now living in Reno Nevada, still continuing their perpetual tour of the western U.S. Frame Of Mind is a band, whose very limits cannot be defined. Interweaving epic songwriting with improvisational exploration, catchy melodies with groove drivin rhythems, thoughtful lyrics with skilled instrumentaion. Their eclectic sound is best appreciated in their extended musical excursions that highlight the very essence of live music. Frame Of Mind is a band not to be missed.

Having toured throughout the west successfully, playing more than 200 shows a year for the past 6 years, FOM is quickly climbing the list of must see modern day traveling rock bands. FOM's music is enjoyed by a wide variey of people. Their love of traveling, meeting new people and seeing new places, along with their dedication to music are reasons why the band has been successful and able to endure the test of time.

In order to accommodate a wider range of venues and audiences FOM travels with their own sound system that can handle the output for up to a 500 person venue. FOM also has an acoustic, as well as an electric set-up. In smaller, more intimate settings the acoustic set is still a high energy performance in a more relaxed atmosphere. The electric set-up is perfect for larger venues and festivals and is in high demand.

Description of music:

Infusing elements from a wide variety of styles including: funk, rock, reggae, Latin, fusion, psychedelic, blues, and more, this all makes for a danceable live music experience that is widely dynamic and diverse. Our most recent catch phrase is: Explosive Freestyle Rock & Roll
Mahalo from AlohaGroove and HELP NEEDED....

Aloha Folks,

Mahalo to eveyone who came out an supported the Hot Buttered Rum & Sambada tours during the last couple of months. Both bands are looking forward to returning to Hawaii sometime during 2008. Hopefully we can work something out to ensure their return.

I've come to a crossroads with repsect to AlohaGroove, and while I don't want to stop doing shows, I may have no other choice. Putting on these shows takes a LOT of time and energy, with not much financial reward on the backend. While I've managed to make a little $$, if I broke it down, I'm sure my hourly wage would be half the legal limit. That being said,

ALOHAGROOVE REALLY NEEDS YOUR HELP.

I've got a lot of different bands/artists contacting me about coming to Hawaii. I can almost guarantee there is a band you want to see here in Hawaii that has contacted me. Bluegrass, funk, jamband, world beat, reggae, americana, DJ, live electronica....you name it, and I've probably been approached.

Honestly, without some strong support, I'm not certain I can continue to bring quality music to Hawaii. The fun is taking away too much time from my real job, and my real job pays the bills.

Below is a list of areas where I need support, and I"m hoping some people will step up and help the greater cause.

1. Graphic Designers....There is a variety of graphic design stuff that needs to be done for each tour. Ultimately, I'd like to have various promotional pieces available for download through www.AlohaGroove.com. For each tour, I generally need: 4-ups, 8.5 x 11, 12 x 17 poster, sometime I need banners. Many times the artist/band will provide the artwork, and the graphic artist just needs to add details about the shows.

2. Website updates...My current web designer is great, but I still need to pay her cash. I'd prefer to trade tickets for web updates. I generally provide the content, and just need it added to the site.

3. Street Team....OK, this is where I REALLY need support....I'm hoping to find a consistent person in each geographical area to handle poster/flyer distribution responsibilities. It's helpful to have the same person do the flyer/poster distribution in each area as they will learn the different stores & places that will allow the posters/flyers.

Street Team just doesn't involved flyer and poster distribution, there are other jobs too...

1. Hospitality...this involves making sure the band's hospitality needs are met. I will give you a list of things they require, and you will need to hit the stores and get them. Usually this involved a trip to the market/health food store.
In addition to buying the items, you'll be responsible for setting up the food/drinks in the backstage area. Of course, you would be reimbursed for any money you spend (please provide a receipt).

2. Ticketing Help...this involves selling tickets at the door. I generally need a total of 4 people for each show. 2 person teams for 2 hours each.

3. Street Team Flyer/Poster Distribution Coordination......I need someone organized and motivated to help with this important task. I've got a list of people who have offered to help (WE STILL NEED HELP!!!), and you'll need to coordinate the various street team activities. (mostly flyer/poster distribution)

4. Production Help....I need a (sober) person or two at each show to help out with loading in/loading out. This requires being at the show a few hours early, and then being around after the show ends to load out. Even if you can only commit to loading in or loading out, please help us!!!

5. Media promotion and press releases. If you are a PR person or know someone who is willing to help out, PLEASE contact me ASAP. Most bands have PR teams, but a local connection would be great.

6. CD duplication and distribution...Since many people have not heard of the bands/artists that AlohaGroove brings to Hawaii, gettting the music out is crucial. I'd love to develop a network of people who would be willing to make (5) copies of a disc (i'll provde the original) and give them to people who might be inclined to attend our events. This is VERY GRASSROOTS, and is VERY HELPFUL.

The time to help is NOW!! 2008 is just around the corner, and there are 3 or 4 bands who want to come out during Jan. and February. Please contact me soon, and let me know how you can help support AlohaGroove.

Any other offers of support greatly appreciated!!!

Peace, love, and aloha,
How can you help AlohaGroove make it all happen?

Aloha Folks...

This is part 1 of a 2 part message. Please reponsd to me directly and not to the entire group. (unless you feel it's good info for the group too!)

DECORATING HELP We are needing a team of volunteers to make and install some decorations at the various shows. We’ve got a couple of great people that help out regularly with decorations, but they could use some help! These decorations would need to be re-usable, and would need to have minimal impact on the venues where they are used. Even if you can't volunteer to make decorations, your creative input and ideas are needed (and GREATLY APPRECIATED.) Please contact us ASAP if you would like to volunteer on the day of the event. Of course, all volunteers get in free!

PLAIN AND SIMPLE…BRING A FRIEND!! Bring a friend (or two) who might not normally go to the shows. A first hand experience is the best way to get the word out AlohaGroove events!! Even if they don't care for the music on a particular night, how can you beat the AlohaGroove vibe?!?

STREET TEAM VOLUNTEERS...FREE TICKETS!! The street team is our most important tool for getting the word out about AlohaGroove events to the folks here in the ..:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Islands. Street team responsibilities includes distributing promotional postcards, putting up posters, requesting the artist's songs on local radio stations, telling your friends about the upcoming shows, posting to local websites, chatting it up on any music related chat groups…anything that can be done a grass roots level to help promote the upcoming gigs is the best way to help the cause!!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED...FREE TICKETS!! In addition to street team help, we also usually need some help on the days of the shows. These responsibilities would include decorating, ticketing/door, merchandise, hospitality etc. Very simple...volunteer for 2 to 3 hours and get into the show for FREE. We usually need 1 to 2 people per smaller shows, and 3 to 5 for larger shows...e-mail me with the date of the show you are available and your contact information. If we need you, we will call you to confirm that we need your help. If you don't hear from us, then it means we've already got someone to cover that show.

VISUAL EFFECTS ARTISTS & PERFORMANCE ARTISTS WANTED As with our last event at Waimea Valley, in addition to the awesome live music, we like to spice it up a little!!! If you or your performance group is interested in performing before the music starts or during the two set breaks, please contact us and let us know what you you've got in mind! Each performance should be approximately 10 to 15 minutes in length. At this time, we don't have a budget for performance artists, however in return, you do get to enjoy an awesome evening under the stars (maybe get some additional guests) while showcasing your talents for just a few minutes! Aspiring visual effects artists are also encouraged to contact us as well, and hopefully we can work something out!

SOUND, LIGHTING, & BACKLINE If you happen to have a quality PA system, speakers, lighting equipment or backline that we could barter for OR rent inexpensively, please contact us and let us know what you have available. Any connections in these areas are greatly appreciated!

CONNECTIONS? If you have a connection, of any kind, that will help the greater AlohaGroove cause, please let us know how you can help! Putting these events together can be tricky, and we are not afraid to ask you to hook us up! Hotel contacts, travel agency contacts, cheap vacation rentals, rental car company employees, venue contacts, things-to-do contacts, lei makers,....you name it, and we can probably use it! Mahalo in advance for your leads!

Please forward this e-mail to every kind, cool music lover you know who might want to join in on the AlohaGroove festivities. Your grassroots support is greatly appreciated, and is vital to the success of these events. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions, suggestions. Or even if you just want to chat!

MAHALO FOR SUPPORTING LIVE MUSIC!
Peace, love, and aloha,

Maui Accomodations for Hot Buttered Rum

Aloha Folks,

If anyone if heading to Maui for Hot Buttered Rum Halloween Rum, some friends have rented a place near Paia, and they need additonal people to rent the "compound". Details below...

So a bunch of us have rented places in this "compound." A cabin, a loft and two studios. BUT we haven't been able to fill the main house yet. It would suck if all of us were along the periphery but some "none us" was in the main house. So if you are thinking of going to Maui, this is a sweet pad & a sweet deal. Join us! See below for details.

From Beth -
I just got a call from the person we booked the Maui Bamboo Gate Property with.
We have 4 of the 5 houses booked. She said there is a possibility
that another party is going to book the main house for 21 days. This
house sleeps 6-8.
I hope one of you fine folks will be a white knight and come on in and
book the place so the freaks can fly freely.

http://www.northshoremauirentals.com/bamboo_mainHouse.htm

Also, if you think that you might be interested in this house but don't have a large enough group to fill it, I would strongly suggest posting to the list about your interest. There are several other people who want to book the house, but who haven't been able to get enough folks to commit to make it work. You could possibly all get together to fill the place up. So make yourselves known

I got the lady in Maui to extend the hold on the Bamboo Gate property
untill 9/25. I hope someone can put together a house hold by then.

House details:
400 a night. With 8 people it works out to 50 bucks a night per
person and there is no minimum night stay. If you stay 3 nights they
waive the cleaning fee.

Main House
MAIN HOUSE- Two bedrooms have queen size beds, one bedroom has two

Support Lower Power FM Community Radio

June 21st, 2007: This morning, Congressman Mike Doyle and Congressman Lee Terry are introducing an important bill -- House Bill 2802, or Senate Bill 1675 -- the Local Community Radio Act of 2007 -- which will, if passed, expand access to community radio all across the country. This bill would tell Congress to recognize that there is no possible interference from low power FM radio stations in America's big cities, and to allow the FCC to grant station licenses there. Senators John McCain and Maria Cantwell are also introducing identical legislation. We'll have bill numbers for you soon, but now is the time to educate your legislators, and to ask them to support low power FM radio. Click here to learn how -- and sign the petition to expand LPFM at http://www.expandlpfm.org today!

Read our coalition press release on the introduction of these important bills here, a fantastic summary of the importance of these bills by Nancy Scola at mydd.com, and listen to the press conference where the Congressmembers joined the Indigo Girls, broadcasters, and religious and advocacy groups here.

And check out this great webtool at Free Press -- LPFM: Local Radio NOW! It includes another great, simple petition to sign and share, and a link to the new Low Power FM Facebook. Sign up today!

Need more details? Read below, or Take Action by clicking here!

This is the first bill introduced on low power FM in the House of Representatives in many years. In the next weeks, a companion bill will come out from Senators John McCain and Maria Cantwell in the Senate -- and together, we'll be ready for our national push to bring community radio to millions more people, and thousands of communities, in the United States!

Low power FM was limited -- kept from America's cities, but with proof from FCC and a $2.2 million dollar study, the time is now to expand low power FM.

Many groups came together to support this essential legislation, including the Alliance for Community Media, the United Methodist Office of Communications, the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, the Future of Music Coalition, the Media Access Project, the National Hispanic Media Coalition, Free Press, the United States Public Interest Research Group, the Christian Coalition, the United Church of Christ, Office of Communication, Inc., Consumers Union, and many more organizations.

You have a chance -this week- to help your Congressmembers support legislation that could bring new, local, accountable, independent community radio to your community and to communities across the nation! Read below to learn how.

In 2000, the Federal Communications Commission established the Low Power FM (LPFM) radio service -- noncommercial, local, low-powered radio that schools, community groups, churches, and any nonprofit could use to broadcast local information to their local community. There are about 800 LPFM stations on air all across the country – but groups in big cities who applied for these great new stations all lost out. Why?

Because the big broadcasters -- represented by the National Association of Broadcasters -- convinced Congress to limit low power FM to the most rural areas, claiming that little LPFM stations would interfere with big radio stations in big cities -- making the radio dial unlistenable.
In the law that Congress passed (the Radio Broadcast Preservation Act of 2000), they also asked the FCC to study whether or not LPFM stations would really cause interference. The FCC hired a big, independent engineering firm -- the MITRE corporation -- to study this potential interference -- and $2.2 million later, they proved that LPFM was a great idea in big cities as well as small communities.

Congressmembers Lee Terry and Mike Doyle, along with Senators John McCain and Maria Cantwell are about to reintroduce their legislation that would bring LPFM to most of America's big cities and to thousands of other small communities. Can you educate your legislators and let them know that new community radio in your town is one great step to building and strengthening communities across the nation?

You can find your Congressmember's information at http://www.congress.org, or by calling the Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121.

And when the staff for the office picks up, you can say something like:

"Hi, my name is ______________, and I'm a constituent of Congressmember _______ and Senators _____ and ______. We need access to more local media to support workers, families, and communities across our area and across the state. Senators John McCain and Maria Cantwell, and Congressman Doyle and Congressman Terry, are about to introduce legislation to expand Low Power FM radio to our area and to many of America's biggest cities. I ask Congressmember _________ and Senators ______ and _______ to cosponsor this bill, the Local Community radio Act of 2007 -- House Bill 2802, and Senate Bill 1675. Thank you!"

Thanks for making this call. You can review some of the legislative history of LPFM here: http://prometheusradio.org/take_action/lpfm_in_congress/ -- and write the LPFM experts of the Prometheus Radio Project at info@prometheusradio.orgThis e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it to learn more.

Forward this note to anyone who wants a new community radio station in and around your community and beyond!

With thanks,

Prometheus Radio Project

Roz Savage...rower, writer, speaker (check this out!)

Aloha Folks,

i was put in touch with a woman named Roz Savage, and she's about to embark on a solo trans-pacific rowing journey. She'll leave SF and will arrive in Hawaii about 3 months later. Please take a minute to check out her site and her mission.

I'm trying to help coordinate a welcoming event with her and I'm looking for some help with this project. If possible, I'd love to have some music, leis, tasty hawaiian food, hula etc.

One obstacle in planning this event is that we won't know the exact time and date until a few days before her arrival, so people will need to be a bit flexible.

Any help and suggestions are appreciated!

Mahalo for listening....

Here's Roz's story...
Roz's Story

It was the year 2000, I was 33 years old, and I seemed to have the perfect life. I had a job, a husband, a home, a little red sports car.
In theory, I should have been happy.

Fast forward to March 2006. I am 38, divorced, homeless, and alone in a tiny rowing boat in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. My last hot meal was two months ago, before my camping stove broke. My stereo is bust. I’ve had no human contact since my satellite phone stopped working several weeks ago. All four of my oars are broken and I’ve had to patch them up with duct tape and makeshift splints. I have tendonitis in my shoulders and saltwater sores on my backside.

I have battled twenty-foot waves, sleep deprivation, self-doubt and depression. But I have never been happier.

They said I was crazy. They said I wasn’t big enough, not tall enough, not strong enough.

But at last, after three thousand miles and 103 days at sea, I am about to accomplish my goal. I am proving that anybody can achieve the extraordinary, if only they have enough guts and determination and sheer bloody-mindedness to see it through.

I am realizing my dream, one stroke at a time.

****

Obviously I'd made a few changes in my life. You may be wondering why somebody who seemed to have it all would choose to throw it all away.

But did I really have it all?

I would sit on the commuter train on my way to the office, wondering if this was what life was all about. I wasn't happy. I wasn't fulfilled. I wasn't being true to my values.

One day I sat down and wrote two versions of my obituary. The first was the one that I wanted to have. I thought of the obituaries that I enjoyed reading, the people that I admired. They were the adventurers and risk-takers, the people who seemed to have lived many lifetimes in one, the people who had tried lots of things, some of them successes, some of them spectacular failures, but at least they’d had the guts to try. They didn't give a damn what anybody thought of them; their own opinion of themselves was all that mattered. They lived life with a greediness for new experiences, and gumption, and a gung-ho attitude that defied the attempts of naysayers and nigglers to pigeonhole them or put them down. These people really knew how to live.

The second version was the obituary that I was heading for – a conventional, ordinary life – pleasant and with its moments of excitement, but always within the safe confines of normality.

The difference between the two was startling. Clearly something was going to have to change.

But even then it was an evolution, not a revolution. One by one, I shed the trappings of my old life – the job, the husband, the home, the little red sports car. I moved house with increasing regularity, wherever I could find cheap or preferably free accommodation. I lived in a tiny cabin on a barge on the Thames, then a Dickensian garret in Richmond, then an office in Battersea. Every time I moved house I got rid of more stuff, the stuff that had been weighing me down, the stuff that I had allowed to own me rather than me owing it. I pared life down to the basics to find out what really mattered to me, to find out what was left when I was defined by what I was, not what I owned.

Little by little I began to realign my life, to put myself on track for the obituary I really wanted.

I learned that living life according to my values made me happier than a big income and lots of possessions.

I stopped being a compulsive planner and started taking a more flexible approach to life.

I stopped caring so much about what other people thought of me, and started caring more about what I thought of myself.

I accepted that mistakes are a fact of life, an inevitable consequence of being adventurous and trying new things.

I realized that it matters less whether something is a success or a failure, and matters more what I learn from the experience.

It became clear to me, intellectually and emotionally and intuitively, that we have to look after our planet if we want it to look after us.

I felt I was getting a few things figured out. But I was like a carpenter with a brand new set of tools, and no wood to work on. I needed a project. And so I decided to row the Atlantic.

***

Rowing the Atlantic was, without a doubt, the hardest thing I had ever done. I’d wanted to get out of my comfort zone, and that, by definition, is an uncomfortable place to be. Physically, it was tough, but psychologically it was even tougher. The ocean is scary and it’s daunting and most of the time I wanted to give up.

But no matter how hard it got, I always believed that the only thing worse than carrying on would be to quit.

I believe that if you don’t keep pushing the boundaries, keep expanding your comfort zone, your comfort zone actually gets smaller and smaller, until you’re shrink-wrapped in such a tiny comfort zone that you can't move, you can't achieve anything, you can't grow. And so I keep pushing, keep developing, keep evolving. I keep showing what an ordinary person can do when they put their hearts and minds and souls into it.

That is why, having rowed the Atlantic, I’m taking on the Pacific

Camp Erdman needs firewood

Camp Erdman needs firewood. At the moment, they are FREQUENTLY burning donated pallets that are probably chemically treated, and definitley have loads of nails. Burning pallets is a BAD example to give to our keiki, so I'm trying to find...

1. Contacts with landscapers who may be able to notify Camp Erdman that FREE wood is available for one of their jobs.
2. People that have a wood from a downed tree or they remove a tree and have FREE wood available.
3. Piles of wood on the side of the road that is FREE for the taking. This stuff usually goes quickly, so please contact me should you a have a lead on some firewood.

Ideally the wood would be dropped at Camp Erdman or possibly some volunteers could pick up the wood and deliver to Camp Erdman in Waialua (North Shore)

They are NOT looking for lumber scraps, just firewood!

Please contact me with any leads!!!

Saloon Pilots Sunday May 6 Mokuleia Polo Fields (North Shore)

Aloha Folks...

In conjunction with the Opening Day for Hawaii Polo, the Saloon Pilots are playing from around 5:00 to 7:30 PM. If you haven't been to a polo match (i have but don't know jack about polo), it's a relaxing way to spend the afternoon. The polo fields are right on the beach near the Dillingham Airstip. Grab some friends, bring a cooler and a chair and enjoy the beautiful surroundings...the match starts around 2:00 PM. Admission is (I think) $8 for adults. Full bar and food service are available.

Aloha Folks...

On other tribes, people frequently post reveiws (detailed sometimes...good/bad/indifferent) about the shows that they see. From a promoter's perspective, I'd love to hear what people think about the shows & bands I'm brining out. If you had a enjoyed yourself at one of the event, please post info about your experience as it can only give others an idea of what people are experiencing at AlohaGroove.com Present events. Provide details if possible..

I don't think it's really fair for a promoter to write reveiws of his own shows, so your help is appreciated.

Peace, love, and aloha,

In need of a DJ

Hello all,
I am in a bit of a pinch. I am in a sorority at UH Manoa and we have our yearly formal coming up. We had a DJ lined up but he bailed. Unfortunatly he was the fiance of an alumni member so we were only planning to pay him $100 and provide him and his assistant with dinner. I know this is like pennies to most DJs but we have a very low budget, only a few hundred to put on the whole event. The event is at the Hale Koa on Friday March 16th from 7-11p.

If anyone is willing to hlep or may know someone willing to help please let me know. If we dont have a DJ a lot of our guests are no interested in coming and we have to pay for dinner for $100 people weather people come or not. I am open to some negotiating.

Drawing upon its members' diverse musical experiences, Blue Turtle Seduction's unique style blends rock'n'roll with bluegrass, mountain roots, global & traditional influences, reggae beats, and a splash of punk. Performed with soaring lead and harmony vocals, its music attracts listeners from every social set and age group. All of the band members write songs, usually with profound philosophical messages and endlessly danceable melodies. BTS also delivers covers of an eclectic variety of tunes, including Violent Femmes' 'American Music,' Manu Chao's 'Mr. Bobby', and Billy Idol's 'Rebel Yell'. The band has performed at many legendary U.S. venues and events, including the High Sierra Music Fest, Knitting Factory, Fillmore Auditorium, Seattle Hemp Fest, and the Whole Earth Festival, appearing on the same stage with acts as diverse as Hot Buttered Rum, Honky Tonk Homeslice, Government Mule, Nickel Creek, Primus, Leftover Salmon, Bela Fleck, Railroad Earth, and Les Claypool. Yeeeehaaaa!
>
> turns out the gig is actually a fundraiser for a local learning
> center. There is no actual ticket cost, its all "suggested donations"
> with a minimum of $8, but again, not required, per the manager of Hard
> Rock. I mentioned the fact that people might want to fly out, 3000+
> miles, his reply was this, "there's nothing we can do, as it's a
> benefit show."
>
> Erik, Jenna or someone, is there something we can work out for the
> travelers?? I am seriously working on making my arrangements to get
> there, but dont want to make the trip and not get in.
>
> It doesnt take long for 270 people to pack the place and make it a sold
> out event.
>>>
>>> I think I'll call the Hard Rock to confirm and see if they'll take

Aloha Folks,

Just a heads up....I've just started the promotional push for the HBR shows, and as of today more than 50% of the tickets for Friday (12/1 with Paula Fuga) & Saturday (12/2 with Steve Inglis) night have been SOLD!! The capacity is about 125 people. Tickets for the rRed Elephant shows are available at www.HonoluluBoxOffice.com or 550 -8457.

Tickets sales for the Waimea Valley show with Jake Shimabukuro are good as well. It's been quite a while since Jake has played publicly on the Northshore, and the show falls right in the middle of the Triple Crown of Surfing, so don't wait too long on these tickets either. The capacity for the Waimea Valley Audubon Center show is about 350, so you do have a little more time to get these tickets. Tickets at www.HonoluluBoxOffice.com or 550 -8457.

Waimea Tickets also available at Surf & Sea (Haleiwa), Hungry Ear (Kailua), Jelly's (Aiea),
Pipeline Smoke Shop (above McGoos on Univeristy Ave)....

Hope to see you at the shows....
I've seen some awesome shows at Ong King, but not enough to make a

Aloha Folks,

There are two bands (jamband types) coming to Oahu during the next couple of months, and potentially a couple more after the holidays. The promoters for both of the confirmed acts (Hot Buttered Rum & a soon to be announced band) need help with street team promotion. As the dates get closer, we'll need help with postering/flyering and handing out post cards, and in return, you'll get into a show for FREE. Please shoot me your contact info, including phone number and where you live, and we'll be in touch.

Peace, love, and aloha,
HOOPING @ Kokua 4/22

It's turned out that I don't have a ticket for the festival after all.
And at this point I am not really incllined to shell out a bunch of cash only to have to deal with amateur night inside the venue.
Instead I've decided to donate the $100 the scalpers are charging to The Kokua Foundation to support what Jack's trying to do for our kids here in Hawaii.
So... I thought I'd call a not-so-impromtu HOOP SESSION in the park outside the show.
I've been told that you can hear the music just as well behind the shell, only minus all the yuppies and tourists.

Anybody with me!?!!!!

I'm thinking I'll head down to Kapiolani Park at 2 or 3PM
and stay until the show lets out.
Look for the hoopers or else call me tomrrow
for a more specific location.

Hey there....don't know all the details, but this is a show dedicated to Scott Spicola (spelling?) who passed away recently. The show is a benefit with a $10. I don't know all the specifics, but just wanted to get the word out.

Palolo Jones, Raincheck, and Deer In The Headlights haven't performed in quite a while. Having only live here for 4 years, I haven't seen most of these bands, so I'm pretty psyched.
It is with great regret that tour promoter The Next Adventure
announces the postponement of the final ten dates of U2's Vertigo '06
'Any fan of U2 will realise that this decision has not been taken
lightly', said TNA President Arthur Fogel. 'We will announce further
details as soon as we have them.'

The effected shows, which are all sold out, are: March 17th & 18th,
Bootleg CD: 'Last Fixx'
Bootleg Type: Concert
Company: Kiss the Stone Records
ID Number: KTS 569
Product Medium: CD
Est. Availability: Extrenmely Rare
Recording Source: Soundboard
Sound Quality: Incredible
Separation of Tracks: None
Interesting Points: Good Intros to Many Songs
"Pigs" Topic: N/A
Total Running Time: 63:44

Show Notes:
This was not a Lollapalooza '91
show date, but it was the last concert the original
lineup of Jane's Addiction would perform, and the
last time all four men would play together.

Commentary:
This is the best sounding live Jane's
Addiction recording ever released. A clear
soundboard recording where the audience is
present at the appropriate times, but the
band's performance is clear.

This is a historic show, and its great to see it
available in such a superb fashion. This show
was the last performance Jane's Addiciton did
before they broke up in 1991. This could also
very well be the last time the band was
together as a whole. Contrary to popular
belief, this is not a Lollapalooza show.

Nearly every aspect of this disc is done in a
professional manner. The sound is
unmatched, and the artwork accompanying
the disc is as well. There is simply no other
unofficial release of this calibur. Kiss the
Stone really outdid themselves with this
release.

Unfortunately, this release is extremely rare
for a number of reasons. It is such a superb
show and package that no one in their right
mind would want to part with it.
Additionally, Kiss the Stone records was
shut down a few months after releasing this
disc. While a reformed version of the label
popped up a few years later, they did not
re-release this disc in large quanities, nor in its
original state.

There is video footage of this show, but the
audio accompanying that video pales in
comparison to this disc.

I don't listen to the radio much, but some station I heard at a friend's house today is saying April 22 is the date for the first of two Rolling Stones shows here on Oahu.

April 22 is also date for the Kokua Festival at the Waikiki Shell.

Let's hope for two Rolling Stones shows......

New Monsoon on the Big Island

Hey there,

I have plans to get my friends New Monsoon to play the Big Island in the next 21 months. I checked out the Swing Zone last week and have heard bands play the Kona Brewery too. What are your suggestions?

They played with Michael Franti in the Big Summer Classic last Summer, and I am wondering if we need more bands such as Spearhead to get a crowd at the Swing Zone. What type of turn out do you guys get when bands play? Are there usually multiple bands that play there together?

I am usually only there visiting for a week or two every 4-6 months from the Oakland, CA, so the promoting could be difficult. Are any of you familiar with these guys?

Your help is appreciated!
Check them out at
http://www.newmonsoon.com/

ALO New Years 2005 Show on Archive.org

Aloha Folks...

http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-details-db.php?id=32664

(streaming available, high quality recording!!!)

I spent 4 wonderful music-filled nights in California for New Years, and this ALO show was my definite highlight. The Divine Ball..Gods & Goddesses was the theme. 225+ costumed people in a heated, clear-sided tent, on a ridge over looking Santa Barbara, with music until just before dawn. The vibe, the love, the music was truly magical...my best NYE ever.???..no doubt...

Peace, love, and aloha,
