Website Provisioning

I am in the process of getting DNS straightened out. I'm transferring domains to Dreamhost's registrar so website management is easy and all in one place. Unfortunately, Network Solutions won't reimburse me for the year I paid them...oh well. I'm never using them again...the person I talked to on the phone was a little less than helpful. It took me 20 minutes to get her to understand what I was even calling about (I don't think they're support is based in the US).

Until everything is transferred, www.altburnative.com and www.altburnative.net will show a Network Solutions page. When it's complete, it will look like www.altburnative.net, which currently has nothing on it. I'll put up an "Under Construction" page when I get home tonight.

Once that is done, I'll have to get the .com and .net redirecting to .org. This shouldn't be hard to do, and I'll see if Dreamhost is going to charge me for doing that. Sometimes, they make you have a DNS-only account.

Then, we can go to work on the website and create something good. Thanks for volunteering Christina! We can definitely use your help!

    This is so freakin' sweet!!

I need a way to put a BIG GRINNING SMILEY up here!

I'll start compiling information and stuff that will be needed for the site, anyone with ideas about stuff you want said on there, holler it out.

And if nobody else says they're wanting to do it, I'll get going on the festival flyer, 'cause it can double as the information page for ticket sales online.

    XXXOOO,
    Me

Ok, www.altburnative.net/ has something on it now. I am still getting the other two domains transferred. It's going to take a while, Network Solutions messed it up already by bouncing our verification e-mail from Dreamhost. They had some private masked mailbox setup for the domain contact that was supposed to forward to me, but it didn't. Grr. Working out the kinks!

Looks good. Maybe dates and directions should be on an Events page. Eventually, we'll have a calendar to go along with it. I'm not sure Effigy should have it's own section. What was this for?

Also, the page doesn't have to be all dark, like it is now. Feel free to go with the deep-dark feel, or try a livelier mood. Whatever you think serves the purpose. I just matched the initial page colors to the picture you created.

Domains are all now pointing where they should be. All domains (altburnative.net, www.altburnative.net, altburnative.com, and www.altburnative.com) all direct to www.altburnative.org. altburnative.org also redirects to www.altburnative.org.

If you attempt to load one of these sites and have a problem, then clear your browser's cache (it may help to close the browser and start it again too). If any one has any issues getting to www.altburnative.org directly or through a redirect (such as www.altburnative.net), then please let me know. Also, if a couple of people would try a few of the domains and let me know that it worked, I would appreciate that too. Everything appears to be working on my end, but in my experience, that's not always the whole story :)

Christina is doing website design now. Pretty soon, we should have more content.

I'm trying to generate that content, and suckingly failing at the moment..

Sorry I have this party kind of happening to me! :) Oh, it's so awful, I had all these great folks show up early to help set up so last night there were about eight dudes at the kitchen table!

I'm not getting much else done!

If anyone out there has any art they'd like to contribute to the website, PLEASE send it to Christina! It would be great for the site to feature as many talented folks as can be.

Meanwhile she's coming here this weekend so I'm sure that between one thing and another we'll get some content and final stuff hammered out. In a dream world we might get it up this this weekend, but realistically even hustling it probably won't be 'til midweek of next week.

The biggest question is how to handle the money. I have a call in to an accountant (my MOM lol) to answer at least one question about some tax liability.

Pete, anything you can find out about the ecommerce feature that comes with the site, that would be great to know, especially the charges to sell/refund through there. We have to be able to tell folks what that charge will be if we can't reach our base!

      This is so exciting! YAY!

          Ecommerce:
We will still need a service such as paypal even if we use a shopping cart provided by the host. All the cart will do is post to the data base and to paypal to actually run the sale. We need to include a $5 non-refundable fee for running the transaction regardless if the party happens or not. That will cover the cost of issuing refunds as well as the cost of the original sale. I wouldn't think that it would be more than that, but someone may want to check paypal's latest fee schedule.

Yeah I've been trying to do that..I know that it's there and I can't figure out why it's not giving me that info. Last time I checked on it it was easy info to come by! WTF Paypal? Maybe I should just use the front door there instead of my account.

Maybe because I need to spend more than five minutes at a time on it! LOL! Will be a better hippie next week!

I love my hectic party schedule! ;)

We could setup a real CC processing account, but it takes money and time to do it. I don't think we're ready for all that just yet. I think PayPal will be the way to go, at least, this first round. If it really takes off, setting up a system with integrated CC payment or a PayPal option would be really cool to do. With what we need to do and the time we have to do it, I think the KISS rule applies (Keep It Simple, Stupid). Like Christina said, it shouldn't be difficult to link to setup a PayPal account and link payments to it with the information we'll need to link that payment back to an invite. I don't know exactly how the system works, but I have a pretty good idea, and I don't think it'll be hard to implement.

Nothing's free, not paypal, and not some CC processing service. No matter what, if we don't actually do this thing and have to give money back, someone's losing something. PayPal isn't that expensive, about 5% (5% of $30 is $1.50).
