Prominent skeptic says he now believes in global warming
"WASHINGTON (AP) — A prominent physicist and skeptic of global warming spent two years trying to find out if mainstream climate scientists were wrong. In the end, he determined they were right: Temperatures really are rising rapidly.
The study of the world's surface temperatures by Richard Muller was partially bankrolled by a foundation connected to global warming deniers. He pursued long-held skeptic theories in analyzing the data. He was spurred to action because of "Climategate," a British scandal involving hacked emails of scientists.
Yet he found that the land is 1.6 degrees warmer than in the 1950s. Those numbers from Muller, who works at the University of California, Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, match those by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and NASA.
He said he went even further back, studying readings from Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. His ultimate finding of a warming world, to be presented at a conference Monday, is no different from what mainstream climate scientists have been saying for decades......."

Re: Prominent skeptic says he now believes in global warming
Sun, October 30, 2011 - 1:33 PMThere's been a lot of discussion about the BEST report at wattsupwiththat.com. Here are two of the salient points.
1. People on both sides of the 'debate' are POd at publicity hound Muller, for trumpeting the 'findings' to the media before they were accepted for publication in the big-name, pal-reviewed alarmist journals.
2. One the points in the report that was underreported in the MSM is that the next-generation Warmies, masquerading as skeptics, are waffling on the question of attribution; they're backpedaling on the "A" in Anthropogenic Global Warming.
Here's a link to a longish review article that I wrote and posted at hubpages.com. It covers the bare essentials, and it's simple enough that nonspecialists can understand it. I did not bother to mention the BEST report in that article.

Analysis. The older Warmies, like James Hansen (he heads up NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies), who are nearing retirement age, may be safe in persisting with the same old song-and-dance. However the younger Climate Change 'researchers' are beginning to realize that they're on the wrong side of history, and on the wrong side of the science.
The next-generation CC 'researchers' are in a pickle. If they tell the whole truth, their funding will be cut off, and they'll have to find real jobs in the current Bush-Obama Recession. If they persist with the same old fairy tale, they will become laughingstocks a decade down the road, and they'll lose their funding anyway.

Sun, October 30, 2011 - 11:53 PMLarry's comment: Professor Muller makes grandiose statements to the press, but his data paints a very different picture.
Best Confirms Global Temperature Standstill
Saturday, 29 October 2011 23:55 Dr. David Whitehouse
Contrary to claims being made by the leader of the Best global temperature initiative their data confirms, and places on a firmer statistical basis, the global temperature standstill of the past ten years as seen by other groups.
Many people have now had some time to read the papers issued in preprint form from the Best project. My strong impression is that they are mostly poorly written, badly argued and at this stage unfit for submission to a major journal. Whilst I have made some comments about Best’s PR and data release strategy, I want to now look at some aspects of the data.

Re: Prominent skeptic says he now believes in global warming
Mon, October 31, 2011 - 4:31 PMCommentators at WUWT have speculated that Muller intended the BEST study to be a vehicle for a media blitz, promoting the Global Warming urban legend, and his own financial interests. Did I mention that Muller has an environmental sustainability consulting business?
Muller doesn't give a hoot whether the study is published or not. He has certainly poisoned the well. And co-author Judith Curry is not a happy camper. -

Tue, November 1, 2011 - 11:47 PMPRE-DATA?
That's how Willis Eschenbach describes the numbers that were put on the BEST website, just in time for Holloween. Because of the timing, I prefer the term: Trick-Or-Treat data. However Muller uses the expression: Not Ready for Prime Time.
Anyway, the article, to which I linked earlier, may have been premature in using the TOT data. It's possible that the TOT data will be massaged later, to yield the politically correct, foregone conclusion, which Muller is currently publicizing in a very aggressive way.

Tue, November 1, 2011 - 8:21 AMmaybe the people who pull Koch strings knew about global warming all along without the slightest doubt in fact counting upon the effects of global warming to help with their long term goal of population reduction and one world government control
KRazy puppet masters dangling dancing multibillionaires while secretly administering the world only to fall asleep at night with ease awaking only to the occasional wet dreams of a sleek, metallic thermonuclear warhead magnificently lit by a thousand buzzing fluorescent lights
and while the people are fed this debate the real world goes on dealing with reality

Re: Prominent skeptic says he now believes in global warming
Tue, November 1, 2011 - 1:34 PMHey Rocky, RTFA. tinyurl.com/6cs7hyo The BEST data says one thing, and Spinmeister Muller is saying the EXACT OPPOSITE! Can you wrap your brain around that fact?
Of course, logical contradictions have never been a problem for True Believers. They just keep hitting people over the head with the same old baloney over and over again. They're incapable of analyzing the pesky details, because they have too much ego invested in their little belief systems.
No intellectually honest, scientifically literate person, who's kept current on the science, and on the lack thereof, believes in the Flying CO2 Monster anymore. It's a thoroughly falsified hypothesis, and the Global Warming meme is the 21st Century equivalent of Lysenkoism. -

That's right, Rocky: substantial increases in CO2 emissions. Help, we're all gonna die!
BFD. Now here's the kicker: No global warming TREND for 13 years, in the face of increasing CO2. The temperature info is from the AQUA satellite numbers, the only REAL, undiddled data available to the Great Unwashed (that's us). For scientifically literate people everywhere, these two pesky facts--taken together--falsify the AGW hypothesis.
